My Creation With Tau Foo Far

The other day, I bought a cup of organic  tau foo far (soy bean curd) without any sugar/syrup after my morning jogging session.   This is how I ate the tau foo far for my breakfast :

I added a teaspoon of Milo and threw in a handful of organic pumpkin seeds and walnuts. When Sherilyn saw me eating it, this Milo lover requested to try it and she liked it too. I gave her some and this brat stirred the Milo with the tau foo far until everything dissolved…. and then gulped down the Milo tau foo far as if it was her milk!

Lemnos Chickpeas Dip And Organic Veggie Crackers

I bought a tub of Lemnos Premium Quality Hommus Dip (consists of chickpeas, white sesame seed paste, lemon juice, canola oil) whilst shopping for groceries at Tesco several days ago.  This is my first time buying this dip and it is a perfect food for weight watchers as it’s high in protein and low in carb.   The dip tastes a tad sour and light and goes very well with salad and crackers.  It cost RM20+ a tub.

My favorite organic crackers from BioGreen.  These crackers are made of organic grains, seeds, wheatgerm and veggie.

My organic cracker with chickpeas dip.  Healthy and yummy!

The chickpeas dip has to be consumed within 7 days of opening so I have to eat it everyday to finish it off.  My 2 gals don’t even want to try it when I told them that it’s cold chickpeas!  The funny thing is that they love roasted chickpeas though.

On a side note, if you are a fan of Lemnos’ cheese, dips and spread, you can get them from Tesco.  The fruit and nuts variety of cheese wedges are RM2+ cheaper at Tesco, selling at only RM15++.  They are sold at RM17++ at other supermarkets.

Less Sugar Vitagen

I found out about the less sugar Vitagen at Barb’s blog.   When I went grocery shopping the other day, I got a pack of orange flavored less sugar Vitagen for Alycia and Sherilyn.  I tasted it and it does taste better with lesser sugar.  It would be really good if Vitagen can come out with a sugar free version of their cultured milk. Diabetics, health freaks and the weight conscious would definitely snap them up.

BTW, my 2 brats whacked the pack of 6 bottles of Vitagen in just 2 days!

The Goodness Of Broccoli

I went into the kitchen and saw some broccolis being cut up and soaked in a stainless steel bowl. My mil will be cooking broccoli for dinner tonight, together with some baby corns, sweet peas, carrots and fish cakes. I used to hate eating broccoli when I was young coz of the raw taste and hard texture but not until I found out the goodness of them.  And that’s when I started to include broccoli into my menu everyweek. Thankfully my 2 older gals love broccoli, so I don’t have to bribe or force them down their throats.

Did you know that :

Broccoli is
Low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol,
High in Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Folate, Potassium, Manganese, Protein, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Selenium?

The nutritional value and health benefits of broccoli makes it ideal for:
o Maintaining optimum health
o Weight loss – don’t include too much broccoli in your diet if you’re interested in weight gain.

Wow, I never knew that broccoli can aid in weight loss. I will surely polish off the plate of broccoli tonight then!

One cup of broccoli only has 30 calories.

Along with all other veggies in the cruciferous family, broccoli is important because it contains natural substances that may help the body fight certain cancers.

Broccoli also helps heal kids’ cuts and wounds—it’s a particularly good source of vitamin C.

For a vegetable, broccoli has very good source of calcium and it helps build strong bones and teeth, which is perfect for growing up kids, as well as adults. Broccoli is one of the best nondairy sources of calcium—better absorbed by the body than spinach.

You can hide broccoli in Oprah’s recipe for Chicken Nuggets.  I am going to try it too myself.  Oprah’s chicken nuggets recipe even has flaxseed meal in em.  Pretty healthy and wholesome for kids!

Sprouted Wheat Bread

I first found out about sprouted wheat bread 6 years ago, during the height of my weight-loss journey. I had gained 6kg in 2 months due to PCOS, a hormonal disorder (my weight shot up from 42kg to 48kg). Most PCOS sufferers are resistant to insulin and have a hard time loosing weight. I found out that in order to loose weight, I had to be on a low-carb high protein diet. That’s when my obsession with low-carb food started.  I then started to avoid most food made from white flour, went cold turney on rice, white bread, noodles, cakes and even fruits with high sugar content like mangoes, grapes, durian, red apples, melons, etc.

When I found out that there is a 100% flour-free bread, I was ecstatic. I ate it for dinner almost everyday – 2 slices of Adventist sprouted wheat bread with sugar-free peanut butter and cheese and sometimes boiled some sausages or microwaved some burgers to go with the sprouted wheat bread.  I ate that in my office almost everyday as I had to work late on most days.  Sometimes my tea-lady would help me microwave the burgers and toast my bread.  With rigorous exercise everyday, I lost weight, albeit it wasn’t easy at all as I had PCOS.

I stopped buying sprouted wheat bread about a year ago when I was carrying Baby C.  When I first bought it 6 years ago, it cost RM4.50 a loaf.  My jaw almost dropped when I saw the price tag on this loaf of bread at Bangsar Village last week.   It now costs RM6.90 a loaf, an increase of more than 50%!!  Unbelievable!  Even a crate of 10 eggs cost 90 sen to a ringgit more now.   Sorry, divert a little here…..

A slice of the sprouted wheat bread only has 12gms of carb…. and it has a low Glycemix Index (GI) too, which slows down the release of insulin.  A slice of white flour bread has over 20gms of carb and has a high GI.

My breakfast today – 2 slices of toasted sprouted wheat bread with peanut butter and some ’boutique cheese’ – Lemnos Black Forest fruit cheese and Seriously Matured Cheddar Cheese.

My breakfast yesterday – untoasted sprouted wheat bread with peanut butter and kaya…. and of course with my favorite Lemnos Black Forest cheese.

The sprouted wheat bread normally turns mouldy within 1-2 days of purchase. I normally keep them in the freezer.

A Handful Of Walnuts A Day

As Baby C is still exclusively breastfed, I try to include as much DHA and Omega 3 rich food in my diet everyday. I pop 1-2 fish oil capsules a day, eat an Omega enriched egg or free-range chicken egg a day, try to eat fish as often as I can, eat flaxseed powder and eat a handful of raw walnuts, raw almonds and pumpkin seeds almost everyday.

Food For Better Thought
Do you know that walnuts is known as a “brain food,” not only because of the wrinkled brain-like appearance of their shells, but because of their high concentration of omega-3 fats? Your brain is more than 60% structural fat. For your brain cells to function properly, this structural fat needs to be primarily the omega-3 fats found in walnuts, flaxseed and cold-water fish.

Do you also know that walnuts is an important part of the Mediterranean diet, providing numerous health benefits? Walnuts, unlike olive oil and other nuts, contain significant amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential plant-based omega-3. Crazy Over Sesame Seeds

Who? Me of course! I love anything that’s healthy and wholesome. I love anything that has sesame seeds or sesame seed oil in them. I especially love to sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on my food –

on my bowl of sugar-free yoghurt for breakfast, together with walnuts (a brain nourishing food) and other seeds and nuts….

on my toast, together with black sesame bread spread and peanut butter…

and on my prawn and pork porridge too.

Sesame seeds are very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. They are also a good source of Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Copper and Manganese.

Organic Omega Soy Flax Meal

I bought this can of flax seed powder from the orgnanic shop for Aly and Sher last week.  It contains organic flax seed powder, organic soy protein, organic soy powder, cane sugar and Oligosaccharide. It is also rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 – a heart and brain nourishing food.

I meant to give it to Sher who has been having probs poo pooing as this product is supposed to be high in fiber and is supposed to improve colon health, helps fight constipation and encourage friendly bacteria to grow.

The powder tastes a little like grated coconut and raw soya beans.  Sher who is always very open to new food and doesn’t mind taking supplements liked it…. but not Alycia who is super sensitive to health supplements or anything that doesn’t look good in her eyes, sigh….. Her eyes turned watery and she almost wanted to puke when she tasted a little of the powder. I think it’s all in the mind coz the powder doesn’t taste that bad after all but she keeps telling me that she doesn’t wanna put that stuff into her mouth.  She wouldn’t want to eat it despite getting bribes and threats from me!  Sigh….. only Sher and I are eating this good stuff now.

That’s how I put the powder into Sher’s food :

I sprinkle a little onto her wanton mee…

a little on her eggs….

and a little on her yoghurt.

I used to blend flax seeds into her rice and dishes when Sher was 1-2 years old.  Flax seeds contain essential fatty acids and these oils are essential for the function and structure of the brain, improve cognition, memory, moods and concentration.
