False Alarm

About 3 days ago, during one of my soiled diaper sniffing sessions, I thought Baby C’s soiled diaper smelled a tad foul and looked a tad yellowish too.  My heart began to thump and I was really very very troubled.  The next morning, my dad brought me to Pantai Putri Hospital to see a pediatrician.    I consulted a female doctor there and she’s one of the friendliest, most helpful, patient and kind pediatrician I have ever seen.  She even gave me her handphone number, something which most doctors won’t do.  I had consulted this doctor the day before on Friday to get antibiotics for Baby C.  It was my first time seeing this doctor.

This doctor talked to me for almost half an hour in her office and did not even charge me for consultation fee!  That was the second time she didn’t charge me.  The day before when I consulted her to get antibiotics for Baby C, she also did not charge me a single sen for consultation.  That was because I had earlier talked with her over the phone (also a lengthy conversation) and I told her that I didn’t have to see her anymore when I reached the hospital but she insisted on seeing me.

Anyway, after the consultation, she gave me a few sterile specimen bottles.  That was on Saturday and I did not send Baby C’s urine to be tested immediately coz there would be an extra charge of RM35 if her pee was tested after 1pm.  I decided to wait until today (Monday) since Baby C’s pee didn’t smell foul anymore when I got back from the hospital.

This morning I collected her pee and thank God, it was easy and fast and she cooperated.  My mum then sent the pee to the hospital.  The doctor just called me to inform me that everything is A-OK…. no WBC, no RBC, no nitrate and no growth in the pee.  Yay, praise the Lord, praise the Lord a million times!  This news is greater than me striking a million bucks jackpot or lottery.   I just hope that Baby C’s pee will remain bacteria-free always.

I tell you, I am really going nuts smelling Baby C’s soiled diaper the whole day.  I am even getting boils in my nostrils from sniffing all the germs!   I have been praying extra hard to God to heal Baby C and I hope He hears my pleas for his help before I go cuckoo lol!

Lemnos Chickpeas Dip And Organic Veggie Crackers

I bought a tub of Lemnos Premium Quality Hommus Dip (consists of chickpeas, white sesame seed paste, lemon juice, canola oil) whilst shopping for groceries at Tesco several days ago.  This is my first time buying this dip and it is a perfect food for weight watchers as it’s high in protein and low in carb.   The dip tastes a tad sour and light and goes very well with salad and crackers.  It cost RM20+ a tub.

My favorite organic crackers from BioGreen.  These crackers are made of organic grains, seeds, wheatgerm and veggie.

My organic cracker with chickpeas dip.  Healthy and yummy!

The chickpeas dip has to be consumed within 7 days of opening so I have to eat it everyday to finish it off.  My 2 gals don’t even want to try it when I told them that it’s cold chickpeas!  The funny thing is that they love roasted chickpeas though.

On a side note, if you are a fan of Lemnos’ cheese, dips and spread, you can get them from Tesco.  The fruit and nuts variety of cheese wedges are RM2+ cheaper at Tesco, selling at only RM15++.  They are sold at RM17++ at other supermarkets.

Storing Baby C’s Meds And Supplements When We Travel

Travelling with Baby C is no fun. I have so many things to pack for her and for my 2 older gals too. Packing her meds, health supplements and probiotics can be quite troublesome and cumbersome. I had to use a medium sized ice box to store all her meds and supplements.

What’s in this ice box?  The liquid in the Avent bottle is Millenium Cactus juice,  antibiotics and Infant Drop multi-vitamins are in the resealable freezer bag and the ones in the brown bottle are her probiotics.  I have another bottle of herbal yeast supplement that does not require chilling.   I also need to put her syringes, medicine dropper and other kar chang in another bag.  The boot of the taxi that took us back to Ipoh was filled to the brim with our luggage and kar chang.  Luckily the boot could shut tightly lol!

Nutrifresh For Baby C

Last week, my friend gave me a sachet of Nutrifresh from E.Excel as sample. I poured a little of the powder and mixed it with water and let Baby C try it. I was surprised that she did not reject it. Ever since her most recent hospitalization for UTI, Baby C has developed a phobia and dislike for any liquid that is sweet, including ice cream and yoghurt. I thought she would reject the Nutrifresh but she liked it.  So I bought a box of Nutrifresh and have been feeding it to her twice a day for the past 1 week. She likes it more if the consistency is not too thick coz when it’s thick, it’s sweet and tastes pretty much like her antibiotics. I normally mix it with soup as she loves soup a lot.  She can drink half a bowl of soup in one sitting.

Baby C’s Nutrifresh mixed with ABC soup and on the right is mashed carrots and potatoes.

This sachet of Nutrifresh can last Baby C for 2-3 days as she can’t eat a lot. Nutrifresh consists of a wide variety of fruits and veggie, all blended into powder and can be fed to babies above 6 months of age. It costs over RM3+ per sachet.

Baby C Loves Veggies Too

Not only does Baby C love cucumbers, she loves veggies too.  Eversince my mil went to Hong Kong, I’ve been blanching my green veggies coz it’s fast, easy, oil-free and healthy…. absolutely not much time to stir-fry them.    We eat mostly choy sum and yau mark tarm.  Each time we eat veggie, I will give the soft stem of the veggie to Baby C.  She would get all excited and would suck on the stem until it turns soft.  Then she would chew it and swallow it too.

My greedy baby has a choy sum stem on each of her hand.  That’s one way I can keep her still on her high chair whilst I quickly feed her cereal or Nutrifresh with soup, else she would squirm, stand and wriggle her way out of the safety belt.

Baby C Loves Cucumbers

Of all the finger food that I had given to Baby C, she loves Japanese cucumbers best.  I am glad she prefers greens over biscuits and other sweet stuff.

To stop her from struggling during our daily antibiotics-feeding battle, she will be given a small wedge of cool cucumber to hold and to munch on.

Baby C enjoying her cool cucumber on the couch.  Notice baby holding with her left hand?  I notice she always holds things with her left hand.  Even the spiral on her head is on the left side.  Does that mean that she will be a leftie?  Anyone knows?

Our daily antibiotics-feeding battle… with Baby C holding tight to a wedge of cool cucumber.

Sherilyn Has An Ulcer

in her inner, upper lip for several days and I only found out 2 days ago when we were at KFC having lunch, sei moh!  Had I known that she has an ulcer, no way was I going to bring her to eat KFC, one of the heatiest food.

Anyway, when we were at KFC, Sherilyn told me again that her upper lip was pain pain. She had been telling my mil and me for the past 3 days or so that her mouth was pain pain but we brushed her aside, thinking that it was just an excuse as she didn’t want to eat her dinner. When it comes to avoiding her meals, she can come up with lots of excuses. She kept pointing to the upper lip, i.e. the part below her nostrils. Since I didn’t see anything red, I thought she had wanted my attention. But I was so wrong. When I turned her lip upward to see the inner part, I saw a medium sized ulcer on the lip.  For a moment, I felt so bad… felt like a terrible mum for brushing her aside and for not taking her seriously when she told me that her mouth hurt.  I quickly asked her to stop eating the nuggets and to eat only the mashed potatoes.  Anyway, she didn’t have appetite to eat much food.

After lunch, we brought her to see the doctor.  The doctor said that the ulcer was caused by some fungal / yeast infection and prescribed her with Mycostatin Oral Suspension.

Sherilyn is to hold the Mycostatin syrup in each side of her mouth (1.5ml for each side) for 30 seconds before swallowing it.  Initially, I had a tough time coaxing her to retain the syrup in her mouth and she almost puked.  After a few times, she got used to the cherry flavor taste and all of us had fun counting from 1-30 each time she held the syrup in her mouth before swallowing it and I rewarded her with some Haegan Dazs ice cream.

Mangosteen Juice

In recent years, there has been so much hype about the goodness of mangosteen juice. When I was shopping for groceries the other day, I saw Marigold’s Peel Fresh new product – the sugar free mangosteen juice and I bought a bottle to try .  It is a mixture of mangosteen juice, apple juice and grape juice.

So how did it taste? Nothing like the pure mangosteen juice. It tastes a lot like kids’ meds syrup. I feel the taste of the grape juice and apple juice have overshadowed the taste of the mangosteen juice. I don’t think there will be a second time purchase of this brand of mangosteen juice for me. The next time, I’ll get the real thing, the pure mangosteen juice from those direct selling companies.

Anyway, I’ll leave you with the nutritional information on mangosteen juice for your reading:

Mangosteen Juice is a popular juice found in different nutrition supplements these days. For hundreds of years, Asian people have used Mangosteen in treatments ranging a full spectrum of health concerns such as inflammation, diarrhea, parasites, wounds, skin infections, burns, pain and more.. Research in western countries shows that the mangosteen fruit has many health benefits also.

Mangosteen as an Antioxidant

Antioxidants are known to help prevent oxidation of our bodies’ cells.
Free radicals cause this oxidation, and the free radicals get into the body as a result of over-exercise, being exposed to dirty air and other environmental pollutants, and stress.

How Antioxidants work

You can see how an antioxidant works by cutting an apple in half and squeezing lemon juice on one half, and leave the other half as it is. After half an hour, the half with the lemon juice on it looks like it was just cut open. The other half is a yukky brown color – the browness was caused by the free radicals in the air.

So, the vitamin C in the lemon juice acted as an antioxidant and prevented the free radicals in the air from damaging the apple. The way the lemon juice works on the apple is the way antioxidants work on the cells in our bodies.

Research has found that the mangosteen’s antioxidants are many times stronger than regular fruit and vegetables. If you drink mangosteen whole fruit juice which includes extract from the pericarp, you will achieve high levels of antioxidant protection.

The mangosteen contains some of the highest amounts of xanthones (a natural chemical substance) found in nature. These xanthones possess very potent antioxidants. When studying 6 of the Xanthones found in Mangosteen, following is a partial list of properties found:

* Increased Energy, Lower Blood Pressure, Anti-depressant,

* Healthier digestion,

* Help relieve migraine, Anti-asthma,

* Natural Pain Relief, Stabilises Thyroid, Heart protective,

* Relieves Urinary Pain, Relieves PMS, Anti-eczema,

* Anti-inflammatory, Anti-diabetic, Anti-tumour,

* Anti-oxidant, Immune and modulating, Anti-arthritic,

* Cholesterol-lowering, Anti-viral/fungal,

* Anti-eczema/psoriasis, Anti-bacterial,

* Anti-Diarrhea, Improved skin quality

Treats To Go With Baby C’s Meds

Ever since Baby C developed a phobia of eating antibiotics after her recent hospitalization for her 3rd attack of UTI, she will scream, struggle and bawl big time till she puked almost every time she’s fed with her daily antibiotics. I’ve tried everything to lessen her phobia by giving her biscuits, baby carrots, yoghurt and last week, I got her some

Haegan Dazs ice cream and Calci Yum,

Heinz yoghurt and strawberry dessert and Heinz pear juice.

The outcome?  She rejected almost everything except the pear juice, which is quite tasteless and is sugar free.

In the end, I used the Heinz yoghurt and strawberry as bread spread for my 2 older gals, which they liked.

I must try and find a way to make Baby C’s daily antibiotics feeding less stressful and traumatic for her and for me.  I am really burnt out and I almost wanted to cry last night when she kept crying and coughing the meds out and splatter the meds all over my face, clothes, couch and floor.  This has been my daily battle for the past 6 months.  Everyday, I ask myself when this will come to an end.  Sigh…..

A Floor Cleaner That Can Repel Pests

I bought this bottle of floor cleaner that can naturally repel mozzies, flies, ants and roaches from Jaya Jusco last night. It cost RM17+ a bottle, which is quite expensive. It contains Citronelle and tea tree oil.  It also has a wax formulation that makes floor shine, smooth and non-sticky for 3 days.   The ingredients used are harmless to skin, is PH balanced and is non-toxic.  This floor cleaner has been tested by SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd.  We’ve started using this floor cleaner today.  I’ll see how effective it is in preventing roaches, one of the insects that can freak me out big time!
