What Are Postbiotics

We have all heard of probiotics, which are microorganisms that increase your population of good bacteria and prebiotics, which are foods for the probiotics.  Prebiotics are fuel needed for good bacteria to grow. Dietary fiber, which you can get by eating certain foods or supplements, is the most common prebiotic.  Enter POSTbiotics, the newest member of the ‘biotics’ family and a hot topic in nutrition.

What Are Postbiotics?

They are the by-product of probiotics and prebiotics — what they produce, which can be made into products or treatments that would have a healing effect on people. Although postbiotics are considered the endgame of probiotics, they offer numerous health benefits for the gut, the immune system, and various other aspects of health.

Although postbiotics are not life microorganisms like probiotics, they still offer health benefits to your microbiome as they contain nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins B and K, short-chain fatty acids, exopolysaccharides, functional proteins, and substances called antimicrobial peptides that can help slow down the growth of harmful bacteria. Short-chain fatty acids help healthy bacteria thrive in your guts.

Compared with probiotics, postbiotics have lower risks of complications as they don’t contain life microorganisms. Even though probiotics are safe for most people, however, people with weakened immune systems, severe illness, or recovering from surgery can get an infection from probiotics. As postbiotics contain no life microorganisms, there’s a lower risk of complications.

Practical Benefits of Postbiotics

Besides having a more economical production as compared with probiotics, postbiotics:

  • Contain a longer shelf-life
  • Is easily stored
  • Is easily transported
  • Are not as sensitive to cold temperatures
  • Are more reliably produced

7 Health Benefits of Postbiotics

These are 6 benefits of postbiotics and how they can benefit our health.

1.  May manage allergy symptoms
Allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to a perceived threat.  Some postbiotic products may boost the immune system or improve immune response by decreasing allergic reactivity.   A few studies have shown that postbiotics may help with seasonal allergy-induced runny, stuffy noses (rhinitis). Another small study found that taking postbiotics for two to three months significantly reduced eczema symptoms as well.

2.  Ease colic in babies
Scientists have been able to decrease colic symptoms with postbiotics in randomized controlled trials.   The research shows that babies fed fermented milk with the bacteria’s fermentation products do better compared with babies that drink breast milk or cow’s milk without the fermented products.

3.  Relieve constipation and diarrhea
People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), diarrhea and constipation seem to get relief from fermented milk products. One study found that a postbiotic regimen had a major impact on the quality of life of those with IBS. After four weeks, participants saw significant relief in terms of bowel movement frequency, bloating and pain.

4. Support immune system
Postbiotics have properties that may help boost your immune system. For example, postbiotics like butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, can stimulate the production of regulatory T cells in your intestine. Those cells help control the magnitude of your body’s immune response.

Other postbiotics, such as cell wall fragments and supernatant from healthy bacteria, can increase the production of anti-inflammatory chemical messengers called cytokines that help reduce inflammation and promote immune responses.

Studies in adults have found that postbiotics may help strengthen the immune system and protect against infections like the common cold.

5. May help lower the risk of heart disease
In animal studies, butyrate seems to help lower blood pressure and suppress genes that play a role in cholesterol production.

6. May help manage blood sugar levels.
Studies suggest butyrate may help manage blood sugar levels.

7. May have anti-tumor properties.
Some test-tube and animal studies show that postbiotics may have qualities that help suppress the growth and spread of some cancer cells, including colon and stomach cancer cells

How To Increase Postbiotics?

The best way to increase postbiotics in your guts is through food by consuming more fermented foods and prebiotic fiber, and then supplementing with postbiotics supplements if there’s a necessity.

Here are ways to boost the production of postbiotics in your guts:

  1. Eat more prebiotic fiber-rich foods such as oats, barley, beans, lentils, peas, onions, garlic, leeks, bananas, apples, asparagus, artichokes, green vegetables, flaxseeds, cocoa and tomatoes.
  2. Eat more probiotic-rich foods such as plain yogurt with live, active cultures, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut (refrigerated), tempeh and miso.
  3. Take a postbiotics supplement.

In Conclusion

Postbiotics are generally safe and well-tolerated by most people. However, due to potential health concerns, certain groups of people may want to avoid increasing their production of postbiotics through eating probiotic foods.

The following groups of people tend to have weaker or compromised immune systems and may therefore be at an increased risk of an adverse reaction:

  • people who have recently had surgery
  • people who have structural heart disorders
  • people with digestive tract disorders
  • pregnant people
  • children

If you’re considering a postbiotic supplement, it would be good to do your research and make sure that the supplement has published data on their product along with third-party testing for purity and efficacy.

It is best to seek the advice of your doctor before starting on a postbiotic supplement as every person is different and postbiotics may not be a miracle pill for everyone.

Vitamin D Protects Against Colds, Flu and Cancer

During our 4 months of home quarantine during the Movement Control Order, I changed my morning workout time from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. everyday.  The morning sun made me drench in sweat after each 1-hour run and the endorphins I got from the mid morning run gave me a high. I also realized that my immune system got stronger after weeks of soaking up the mid morning sun. Never mind the bronze tan that I got on my face and limbs; I was happier and felt stronger.

Did you know that the sun is your best source of Vitamin D?  It’s also known as the Sunshine Vitamin. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it makes vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun’s ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur.

A recent study by a global team of researchers has found that Vitamin D supplements, already widely prescribed for a variety of ailments, are effective in preventing respiratory diseases. And since the sun is our best source of Vitamin D, you don’t even need to buy supplements to get your dose of Vitamin D.  However, if you stay in countries that do not have sunlight throughout the year, Vitamin D supplements is a good option.

Most people know that Vitamin D is critical for bone and muscle health. An analysis by the Department of Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts found that Vitamin D helps the body fight acute respiratory infection, which is responsible for millions of deaths globally each year.

In another study led by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), it was found that Vitamin D supplements protect against acute respiratory infections including colds and flu.  The study provides the most robust evidence yet that vitamin D has benefits beyond bone and muscle health, and could have major implications for public health policy, including the fortification of foods with vitamin D to tackle high levels of deficiency in the UK.

There are Vitamin D receptors and activating enzymes on the surfaces of all White Blood Cells. The role that vitamin D plays in keeping the immune system healthy is very complex because the immune system has to be perfectly balanced. If there is too much stimulation, autoimmune diseases can set in. If there is not enough immune system activity, frequent infections can occur.

In 2017, a large analyses of prospective clinical trials showed that taking Vitamin D reduces the odds of developing a respiratory infection by approximately 42% in people with low baseline levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D; below 25 ng/mL.

The analysis suggests that taking Vitamin D daily or weekly was more effective than larger doses taken in single or monthly boluses. The most common daily dose used was vitamin D3 300-4,000 IU.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, sufficient Vitamin D is found  to lower the risk of cancer.  The evidence suggests that efforts to improve vitamin D status, for example by vitamin D supplementation, could reduce cancer incidence and mortality at low cost, with few or no adverse effects.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

While the U.S. National Academy of Medicine considers 600–800 IU of daily vitamin D to be sufficient for the majority of the population, the U.S. Endocrine Society recommends 1,500–2,000 IU per day.  The Reference Daily Intake (RDI) is currently set at 600-800 IU of vitamin D for adults, based on the U.S. National Academy of Medicine’s recommendations

Here’s how much vitamin D you need every day, according to the Institute of Medicine.

Age 1-70: 600 IU
Age 71 and older: 800 IU

Foods that provide vitamin D include:
Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon.
Foods fortified with vitamin D, like some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals.
Beef liver.
Cheese.
Egg yolks.

Brainzyme Review – A Supplement For Brain Power

Recently some of my friends lamented to me that they dreaded going back to the office to work after spending several months working from home while in home quarantine. No one looks forward to waking up between 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. to get their kids ready for school and then get ready for work. Braving through horrendous traffic jam, occasionally dozing off behind the wheels at traffic lights stops, struggling to keep awake during meetings and beating a mental fog while rushing to submit reports and proposals are some of the struggles that  full-time working moms and even dads battle with every work day.

Most people do not have enough time in one day to clock in 7-8 hours of sleep and some people, like me, are constantly chronically sleep deprived.  On school-going days, I am already up and about at 4:30 a.m.. After sending Cass up the school van at 6-ish in the morning, I run for half an hour before rushing home to send Sherilyn to school.  If I do not have work to submit to my bosses on that day, I go to the park and run for another 30 minutes.  By 10-ish a.m, my step count hits 10,000 and my energy level goes down south.  By this time, while staring at work on the PC screen, I feel cloudy-headed and I can’t think of what to write and eventually snooze off for half an hour.

What if I could get something that is completely natural, plant based and in full compliance with UK Department of Health and EFSA statutory legislation to help me prolong my energy level and stay focused for up to 8 hours?  There is indeed a supplement for your brain called Brainzyme that you can pop to give you the much-needed brain power to accomplish your long list of To-Do Tasks in a day!

Cod Liver Oil Helps With Allergies And Asthma

I have allergic rhinitis almost all my life. Every morning on end, the first thing that welcomed me was blocked nose with sneezing. Environmental factors like cigarette smoke, dust, strong perfumes, air freshener and change of temperature made the symptoms worse.  The allergy miraculously went away when I was in my early twenties when I decided to try liquid cod liver oil. I’d consume a tablespoon of original flavor cod liver oil everyday and several months later, I saw remarkable improvements in my health.  Cod liver oil is the yuckiest thing that I had ever tasted and till this day, I am still very averse to the smell and taste of it.  Thankfully cod liver oil is available in capsule form which makes it so much easier to consume.  Recently I started on cod liver oil capsules again after a break of over a decade as the familiar symptoms of  allergic rhinitis are popping up again.

Cod liver oil capsules arranged into the shape of a fish

Common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include:

  • sneezing
  • a runny nose
  • a stuffy nose
  • an itchy nose
  • coughing
  • a sore or scratchy throat
  • itchy eyes
  • watery eyes
  • dark circles under the eyes
  • frequent headaches
  • eczema-type symptoms, such as having extremely dry, itchy skin that can blister and weep
    hives
  • excessive fatigue

You’ll usually feel one or more of these symptoms immediately after coming into contact with an allergen. Some symptoms, such as recurrent headaches and fatigue, may only happen after long-term exposure to allergens. Fever isn’t a symptom of hay fever.

Some external factors can trigger or worsen allergic rhinitis, including:

  • cigarette smoke
  • chemicals
  • cold temperatures
  • humidity
  • wind
  • air pollution
  • hairspray
  • perfumes
  • colognes
  • wood smoke
  • fumes

For ages, parents have been forcing a spoonful of cod liver oil down the throats of little children. The nasty aftertaste that it leaves makes you wonder why go through the trouble. What does cod liver oil do anyway? In present day, the use of cod liver oil has decreased but there are still those faithful few that hold on to the notion that cod liver oil is a cure all especially in regards to allergies and asthma.

Cod liver oil is renowned as a nutrient-dense source of vitamins and essential fatty acids. It is, as the name suggests, derived from cod liver and is available as a liquid or capsule supplement.

According to a journal article from the US National Library Of Medicine, cod liver oil along with Vitamin A, C, E, D and a high dosage of Vitamin B Complex are very significant in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.  Cod Liver oil is high in Vitamins A & D which are natural anti-inflammatory to reduce inflammation of the mucus membranes. Vitamin C reduces inflammation and allergic responses. Fish oil may help to decrease the dryness of the lining of the respiratory tract and retain moisture in the the nasal passages.

Nutritional benefits of cod liver oil
The star ingredient in cod liver oil is omega-3, a polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3 is known as an essential fatty acid because the human body is unable to make it, so it is necessary to get it from food.

Omega-3 from fish can be broken down into two different types: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which together and individually offer many health benefits. The World Health Organisation recommends eating 1-2 portions of oily fish a week, equivalent to 200-500 mg of EPA and DHA.

Cod liver oil is also a good source of vitamin D, which helps us to absorb calcium and is important for strong bones and teeth.

All the nutrients in cod liver oil help prevent cancer. Vitamin A has been a part of  successful alternative cancer therapy so far. In a study in China, use of cod liver oil was found to be protective against childhood leukemia. In a study of Norwegian men and women, consumption of cod liver oil was found to protect against lung cancer.

Cod Liver Supplementation Hack:
Keep your cod liver oil bottle in the freezer, and take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Why? Frozen cod liver oil is great at fighting worm infections, and can even be effective for amoeba parasites! When taken frozen on an empty stomach they will go right through the stomach, and when they get to the small intestine, they begin to dissolve and the cod liver oil is so thick that it coats the parasites like a blanket and suffocates them and kills them. Amazing!

Conclusion
In adults, cod liver oil may have its benefits of decreasing asthma and allergy symptoms. However it may increase allergic sensitization in children so caution should be taken. Even so, it may be better to increase children’s diet of fruits and vegetables to lower the risk of asthma and allergies. Also, one must remember that with taking cod liver oil, as any supplement, there are some risks. Over- consumption of cod liver oil means over- consumption of vitamin A which can cause toxicity in the body. Therefore, further research should be done on the matter as well as consulting a physician before adding a supplement to your diet.

Fish Oil Health Benefits

I started taking fish oil supplements when I was about 18 years old. I cannot tell you how effective it is in relieving my sinus problem. As a child I used to suffer from chronic sinus. This went on until I was in my late teens. When I started taking Scott’s pure cod liver oil in liquid form (original flavor and the most foul tasting food ever), the sinus problem gradually improved and I seldom have sinus attacks. I hated the smell and texture of the cod liver oil and had to hold my breath each time I swallowed a tablespoon of it.  Later, I stopped torturing myself and switched to cod liver oil capsules. After the birth of my eldest daughter, I switched to fish oil with Omega 3 and have since been popping between 2-3 capsules of Omega 3 fish oil capsules enriched with DHA and EPA daily to nourish my brain, eyes and overall health.

According to research conducted at Harvard University, omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is officially one of the top 10 causes of death in America, claiming the lives of up to 96,000 people each year. Out of the 12 dietary, lifestyle and metabolic risk factors examined in the study, omega-3 fatty acid deficiency ranked as the sixth highest killer of Americans. These deaths are considered preventable since getting enough omega 3-fatty acids in your diet can ward off this now common cause of death.

The fish oil benefits include decreasing the risk of heart disease and stroke while also helping reduce symptoms of depression, hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), joint pain, arthritis and chronic skin ailments like eczema. Fish oil intake has also been associated with aiding the body in weight loss, fertility, pregnancy and increased energy. Prescription fish oil has even been approved by the FDA to lower unhealthy high triglyceride levels.

Health Benefits Of Fish Oil

Boosts Heart Health
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), clinical trials have shown that omega-3 is effective in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Fish oil is a great source of omega-3 and therefore, reduces the risk of heart diseases and heart arrhythmias. It also lowers the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the level of good cholesterol (HDL). Fish oil prevents the accumulation of triglycerides and also reduces the level of excess triglycerides.

Alzheimer’s Disease
For several years now, the fish oil and Alzheimer’s disease connection has been studied with consistent results. The essential fatty acids vital for brain function that are found in fish oil can not only slow cognitive decline, but can help prevent brain atrophy in older adults.

Anxiety
The European Journal of Neuroscience published a study in 2013 showing that fish oil reversed all anxiety-like and depression-like behavior changes induced in rats. This is an interesting study because it stresses the importance of supplementing with fish oil at critical periods of brain development.   This is the reason why I have been feeding my children with fish oil since they were toddlers.  When they were younger, I used to feed them with orange-flavored cod liver oil in liquid form.  Now that they are older, they pop a fish oil capsule everyday.

Improves Immunity
It is believed that regular consumption of fish oil aids in boosting your immune system, thereby enabling you to resist the occurrence of common diseases like colds, cough, and the flu. Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil bolster the immune system by affecting the activity and amount of cytokines and eicosanoids present in our body. Researchers have also studied the effect of a fish meal and fish oil on the immune system of pigs and found that fish oil aided in the growth of the animals. Similar research conducted on mice at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, also gave positive results.

Eye Care
It is well known that fish oil has the ability to improve vision. It also helps in avoiding age-related macular degeneration.

Fish oil has been shown to reverse age-related eye disorders. In March 2014, French researchers evaluated 290 patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and they discovered that dietary oil fish and seafood intake were significantly lower in AMD patients. Due to the high EPA and DHA levels in fish oil, it was concluded that this kind of nutritional intervention could especially benefit those at high risk for neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

A higher intake of polyunsaturated fats like those found in fish and fish oils have also been linked to reduced levels of cortical cataracts.

Diabetes
A study published in Brain Research shows how far-reaching fish oil can be for people with diabetes. Researches found that fish oil can help reduce the risk of diabetics from developing cognitive deficit because it protects the hippocampus cells from being destroyed. The study also showed that fish oil could help reduce oxidative stress, which plays a central role in the development of diabetes complications, both microvascular and cardiovascular.

Skin and Hair
The health benefits of fish oil can be incredible for the body’s largest organ, the skin. This source of essential fats improves the health and beauty of human skin in several ways. Fish oil benefits and nourishes the skin with fats and contributes fat-soluble vitamins that help skin maintain a smooth, elastic texture. There is also evidence that fish oil prevents wrinkles and works against the aging process.

The deficiency of EPA and DHA in diet contributes to skin conditions, such as dandruff, thinning hair, eczema and psoriasis, as well as age spots and sun spots. Without the essential fatty acids, too much moisture leaves the skin. The truth is your internal health can appear on your skin, and taking fish oil internally as a supplement may be as good as or better than applying conventional moisturizers.

Fish Oil Reduces Triglycerides and Increases HDL
Both EPA and DHA have the ability to reduce triglyceride levels, most effectively after several weeks of supplementation.

Fish Oil Promotes Weight Loss
EPA and DHA have the ability to activate receptors in the body that increase metabolic rate.

DHA is correlated with weight loss in humans.

Fish oil’s anti-inflammatory effects have the ability to indirectly aid in fat metabolism in people with high inflammation or metabolic syndrome.

Fish oil can increase the secretion of adiponectin, which is responsible for breaking down fats.

Fish oil increases enzymes in muscle cells, which is associated with fat loss.

Combining fish oil supplements with exercise and a proper diet is effective in weight loss.

Supports Healthy Pregnancy
Fish oil is very beneficial for pregnant women because the DHA present in it helps in the development of the eyes and brain of the baby. It also helps to avoid premature births, low birth weight, and miscarriages.

It is also believed that women who do not have a sufficient intake of EPA and DHA in their diet suffer from depression after childbirth, as there is a transfer of some amount of brain mass from the mother to the child in the last stages of pregnancy. Thus, it is very beneficial to consume fish oil either by eating fish or taking fish oil supplements, tablets, capsules, or pills during pregnancy for the overall development of the child and the well-being of the mother. However, it should be noted that fish oil obtained from the liver of the fish, example – cod liver oil, should not be consumed during pregnancy as cod liver oil is high in retinol and vitamin A, which are usually known to cause birth defects.

Side effects from omega-3 fish oil may include:

  • A fishy taste in your mouth
  • Fishy breath
  • Stomach upset
  • Loose stools
  • Nausea

Taking more than 3 grams of fish oil daily may increase the risk of bleeding.

Fish oil can be hazardous when combined with aspirin or other blood thinners.

If you want to take higher doses of omega-3 fish oil supplements,  consult your doctor first. Your doctor can guide you in supplementing your diet with omega-3 fish oil.
