Baby’s UTIs Caused By What I Ate. Coincidental Or A Fact?

My mum is suspecting that Baby’s frequent UTI could be due to what I eat, in particular shell food and raw sushi.

In the past, each time Baby had a urinary tract infection, my mum would help me track back on what I had eaten. 2 times in the past I had eaten raw sushi and Baby had a UTI several days later. 2 Sundays ago I had Japanese buffet for lunch. I had taken all the precautions and avoided the mouth-watering raw salmon, raw oysters and raw butter fish. But I ate baked oysters – about 3 of them. 4 days later, Baby’s pee started to smell a tad foul and looked cloudy.

My paed could not give me an answer when I asked him if the UTIs were caused by what I ate. I could not get any answer too from the internet. Would anyone like to help me answer my question?

Psyllium Husk To Relief Baby’s Constipation

I have been feeding Baby with pure psyllium husk for about 2 weeks now to provide relief for her constipation problem. Each day, I will sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of psyllium husk into her soup, twice a day. Though she still cannot move her bowels every single day, at least her poop is not rock hard anymore. I will continue to feed her psyllium husk, pump in lots of fluids into her body plus get her to eat a serving of fruit everyday. Getting her to swallow fruits is quite a challenge as she is not a fruit lover.

Baby’s bowl of kombu + lean pork soup with psyllium husk. Thank goodness she has no problem swallowing the yucky psyllium husk!

Hobby Gardening

Ever since my mum retired from her job as a teacher, she has been spending much of her time gardening. She plants vegetables, chillies, fruit trees, flowers, several types of herbs to treat various disorders, beans and much more. My dad who has just retired is now joining my mum. Whenever I go back to my parents in Ipoh, my kids and I get to savor the produce from their garden. There used to be a fertile papaya tree that bore many sweet papayas but the tree died last year. There were also 2 rambutan trees that bore tons of sweet, juicy rambutans but the trees became infertile and my parents eventually chopped the trees down. I wonder why the trees just stopped bearing fruit and eventually died.

My parents are not expert gardeners and they lack the knowledge on proper tending and caring for their plants and trees. I should get them Urban Farm Magazine or Hobby Farm Magazine so that they can get handy tips and advice on gardening to raise healthy crops. My parents’ crops are all grown organically without the use of fertilizer and chemical. If armed with the proper advice and knowledge on gardening, I am very certain my parents don’t have to buy vegetables from the market anymore. Their garden is so large that they can plant enough vegetables to feed the both of them. I am now starting to crave for my mum’s homemade fresh mushroom soup with basil leaves that she grows in her garden!

Cloudy Urine Again

Two days ago Baby’s pee was cloudy, had lots of particles floating inside and smelled a little foul. I am all too familiar with the first few symptoms of a UTI. The moment I noticed the cloudy pee, I have been forcing tons of water down Baby’s throat. I boiled some barley water with a kind of green leaves (which are supposedly good for the bladder, kidneys and urinary tract system) and fed her with lots of it. Also fed her with coconut water (also supposedly good for the urinary tract system) and Refresh from E.Excel (beneficial for cleansing the urinary tract system). I sent a text message to Baby’s surgeon and asked for advise. He said he would not treat Baby if she is well with no fever or vomiting. He does not like to over-treat kids. Both Baby’s surgeon and I are still perplexed as to why Baby still get UTIs though the post-surgery MCUG showed that she has no more kidney reflux.

I am very determined that I want to get the bacteria out of Baby’s urinary tract naturally without the use of strong antibiotics. Too much usage of antibiotics will only render the bacteria resistant to them, as this was the case with Baby before her ureteral reimplantation surgery in May last year. I have been feeding her extra frequency / dosage of Waterfall D-Mannose, started feeding her with Echinacea (I ground the tablet into powder and added it into her milk) and fed her with lots and lots of fluids. I made her sit on her potty for long periods of time at regular intervals so that as much bacteria as possible will be flushed out from her urinary tract together with the urine. The lesser urine that’s in the bladder, the better it will be.

I suspect that the bacteria in the urine is caused by several factors. One – Baby has been suffering from constant constipation lately. Baby’s surgeon had warned us many times that constipation will trigger a UTI. Two – several days ago, Baby slept through the night without peeing for 10 hours! Though I brought her to the potty in the middle of the night, she didn’t want to pee and fussed. Having urine in the bladder for 10 hours is definitely not good for her or for anyone for that matter. Three – there is a very small red patch on Baby’s labia, which our paed said was fungal infection. Many times in the past when Baby had UTI attacks, I noticed that there was also a small red patch on her labia. So it could be the bacteria from the fungus causing the UTI or it could be the other way round.

Today is the 2nd day and Baby’s pee isn’t as cloudy and yellow as before but is still a tad cloudy. I have to wake up at 2am to feed Baby with water + Waterfall D-Mannose and to bring her to pee. Praying hard that by tomorrow her urine will look clear again.

Successfully Kept The Flu Bug Away

Two days ago, I felt an impending throat infection, cough and runny nose attacking me. My throat felt slightly painful, my voice started to change, nose felt stuffy and the entire body just didn’t feel right. I knew I had caught the bug from Alycia who was having a slight cold. At the immediate onset of the first symptoms, I quickly popped my trustworthy Esberitox, drank apple cider vinegar + honey, drank lots of water, stayed away from fried food stuff, ate lots of fruits and veggie, drank coconut water to cool my body, gargled my throat with salt water 3-4 times a day and banned myself from staying up late, working on my computer. I have been adding new clothes to my blogshop everday, including some hip hop clothes. Getting sufficient sleep is very important so that the body heals faster. Today is the third day and I am glad to say that I managed to keep those pesky bugs under control. Alycia is getting better too, thanks to the Esberitox which she popped 3x a day.

A Guava A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Many, many years ago, there was a tall guava tree outside our house. It was my favorite tree as I would climb the tree and stay up there for a long time. Sometimes I would pluck ripe guavas and sometimes I would hang from branch to branch like a monkey! That old guava tree bore many fruits and we had ample supply of sweet guavas year long. My late maternal grandma would make guava juice for herself a few times in a week to treat her high blood pressure and diabetes. Till today, I still like guavas very much. But I had recently read from a blogger that eating guavas will naturally stop you from lactating. So I have stopped eating guavas but will still munch on them once in a while.

Guavas are a storehouse of nutrients and can be used to treat the following conditions:

* Diarrhea & Dysentery: Guava is very rich in astringents (compounds those make your gums feel tighter and fresh after you chew guava leaves or eat a raw guava or use some toothpaste) which binds up loose bowels in diarrhea. These astringents are alkaline in nature and have disinfectant and anti-bacterial properties, thus help cure dysentery by inhibiting microbial growth and removing extra mucus from the intestines. Further, other nutrients in guava, such as vitamin-C, Carotenoids and potassium strengthens and tones up the digestive system and disinfect it. Guava is also beneficial in gastroenteritis due to reasons stated above.

* Constipation: Guava is one of the riches sources of dietary fiber. Its seeds, if ingested whole or chewed, serve as excellent laxatives. These two properties of guava help forming bowels, retaining water and clean your intestines and excretory system thoroughly. It is said that single constipation can lead to seventy two types of ailments. It is absolutely true. Every way to your total health goes through proper digestion and more importantly, proper excretion. Guava ensures both of these.

* Cough & Cold: Juice of raw and immature guavas or decoction of guava-leaves is very helpful in giving relief in cough and cold by loosening cough, reducing mucus, disinfecting the respiratory tract, throat and lungs and inhibiting microbial activity due to its astringent properties. Guava is one of richest in vitamin-C and iron which are proven to be preventive against cold and viral infections. In some areas in India, roasted ripe guava is used as a remedy against extreme cases of cough and cold and congestion.

* Skin Care: Guavas can help improve your skin texture and avoid skin problems more than the best of beauty creams or skin toner gels can do. This is chiefly due to the abundance of astringents in its fruits (more in immature ones) and in leaves. You can benefit from it either by eating the fruits (this help tighten your muscles apart from your skin) or by washing your skin with the decoction of its immature fruits and leaves. It will tone up and tighten the loosened skin. In addition to the astringents, guava is very-very rich in vitamin-A, B, C and potassium which are very good anti oxidants and detoxifiers and keep your skin glowing and free from aging, wrinkles and other disorders.

* High Blood Pressure: Guava helps reduce cholesterol in blood and prevents it from thickening, thereby maintaining fluidity of blood and reducing blood pressure. Studies have shown that food stuffs which lack fiber (such a refined flour) add to blood pressure, due to quick conversion to sugar. Guava, being very rich in fiber and hypoglycemic in nature, helps reduce blood pressure.

* Weight Loss: Guava is very helpful for those who want to lose weight without compromising with their intake of proteins, vitamins and fiber. Guava, being very high in roughage and very rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals, but with no cholesterol and less digestible carbohydrates, is very filling and satisfies appetite very easily. Just have a medium sized guava in the lunch and you will not feel hungry till night. But ironically, it helps gaining weight in lean and thin people. This is probably due to its richness in nutrients, which keeps your metabolism right helping proper absorption of nutrients.

* Scurvy: Guava can outdo many other fruits, including orange and other citrus fruits, when it comes to concentration of vitamin-C, whose deficiency causes scurvy and which is the only remedy to it. It contains five times the vitamin-C in oranges.

* Other Benefits: The juice of the leaves cures toothache, swollen gums & oral ulcers, heals wounds when applied externally, convulsions, epilepsy, bacterial infections and much more.

Cut Out The Sour Candy

Did you know that sour candies like Sour Skittles, Super Lemon and some flavored Altoids are high in acids that strip away your teeth’s protective surface? Even lemon juice will corrode your teeth enamel. I can vouch on that. After almost every drink of freshly squeezed lemon juice or grapefruit, I have this sensitive, uncomfortable feeling on my teeth. Even some candies or sweet snacks will cause this effect on my sensitive teeth.

Dentist Robert J. Marolt offers this advice:

> Rinse right away. Swishing water in your mouth after a candy helps wash away the acid.

> Wait for half an hour before brushing your teeth. The acid of a sour candy softens the fragile surface of the teeth. Brushing immediately after eating one could cause damage.

> Skip fruit flavours. Lemon, grape, and cherry destroy more enamel than do mint and cinnamon, which are lower in acid.

> Switch to sugar-free gum. It can satisfy your oral urge while stimulating saliva flow, which protects enamel.

Cabbage Health Benefits

One of my favorite vegetables is cabbage. I like it eaten raw in salad, coleslaw, stir-fried with dried shrimps, boiled with soup and stir-fried with noodles.  Many years ago when I had my first Mastitis (blocked milk duct) when Alycia was a newborn baby, I used frozen cabbage to apply on my boops to relieve the pain.  I don’t know if it really worked or just coincidental, but the blocked milk duct was unblocked after the frozen cabbage application.   After 1 long day, the milk shot out like water shooting out from a burst water pipe!  Did you know that cabbage is a very nutritious veggie?

The health benefits of cabbage include treatment of constipation, stomach ulcers, headache, excess weight, skin disorders, eczema, jaundice, scurvy, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, eye disorders, heart diseases, ageing, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Did you know that the cheap, humble looking and so widely used cabbage could work miracles? Cabbage is a leafy vegetable of Brassica family, round or oval in shape, consisting of soft light green or whitish inner leaves covered with harder and dark green outer leaves. It is widely used throughout the world, eaten cooked or raw as salad and is a very popular vegetable.

Deficiency Symptoms:
Deficiency of Vitamin C: Scurvy, which is recognized by spongy and bleeding gums, cracked lip corners etc., very weak immune system, frequent infections and cold, ageing, depression etc.
Remedy: Cabbage is abundant is Vitamin C. You will be surprised to know that it is richer in vitamin C than the famous oranges. Vitamin C, being one of the best anti oxidant, reduces free radicals in your body which are the basic causes of ageing. It also helps repairing the wear and tears in the body. Thus it is very helpful in treating ulcers, certain cancers, depressions, for strengthening immune system and fighting against cough and cold, healing of wounds and damaged tissues, proper functioning of nervous system and thereby help curing Alzheimer’s disease etc.

Deficiency of Roughage: This is a very serious deficiency but most neglected. Lack of roughage in the food results in constipation, the root cause to innumerable other ailments and health hazards such as stomach ulcers, headache, intestinal cancer, indigestion and resultant loss of appetite, skin diseases, eczema, ageing and hundreds related problems.
Remedies: Cabbage is very rich in fiber. This helps retain water and forms the bulk of the food and the bowels. Thus it is a good cure for constipation and related problems.

Deficiency of Sulphur: Sulphur is a very useful nutrient as it fights infections. Its deficiency results in microbial infections and late healing of wounds.
Remedy: Again, cabbage is rich is sulphur. So, it helps fight infections in wounds and ulcers.

Detoxification by cabbage: Cabbage is a good detoxifier too, i.e. it purifies blood and removes toxins (primarily free radicals and uric acid which is major cause for rheumatism, gout, arthritis, renal calculi, skin diseases, eczema, hardening and de-colorization of skin etc.). This detoxifying effect of cabbage is due to the presence of vitamin C and sulphur.

Other benefits of Cabbage: Cabbage, being rich in iodine, helps in proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system, apart from keeping the endocrinal glands in proper condition. Thus, it is good for brain and treatment of neurotic disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. The various other nutrients present in cabbage such as vitamin-E which keeps the skin, eye and hair healthy, calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc., are very useful for overall health. The cabbage can also be used for treatment of varicose veins, leg ulcers, peptic and duodenal ulcers etc.

So, now you know that the inevitable part of your Chinese dish could do you miracles. Add more and more cabbage in your daily diet, be it your soup or be it your salad, this is going to help you live a healthy and longer life.
