Benefits Of Regular Exercise

I cannot tell you enough how beneficial exercising is to your mind, body and soul. I have always been a very outdoorsy person but ever since I started working, exercise had been the last thing on my priority list. All that changed when I found out that I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) 9 years ago. After doing some extensive reading, I found out that exercising can help alleviate some of the symptoms of PCOS like weight gain and acne. And that’s how my daily half hourly exercise regime started 9 years ago. For 9 years, I exercised every day, rain or shine, but skipped the regime during my 3 pregnancies and 2 months post-delivery.

Before I moved to a condominium with gym facility, I had plans of buying a treadmill and even a Tunturi exercise bike. For about 2 years during the time I was still working as a PA, I woke up at 5:30am to jog every morning before I left for work. It required tons of discipline in order to stick to the regime but it was worth the sacrifice. The merits of regular exercising were great and I felt great. But many times, I exercised in fear of being mugged in the pre-morning darkness. For that reason, I nearly bought a treadmill and a Tunturi Ellipticals so that I could have 24 Hour Fitness in the comforts of my own home. It was my hubby who prevented me from buying one. Good thing I listened to him, otherwise I would have to give away my treadmill and the Tunturi exercise bike when we moved to a condominium.

Yoghurt Drink The Latest Rage

My 2 older girls’ latest rage is fruit flavored yoghurt drinks. They have cut down their milk intake from thrice a day to only once a day about a year ago. Except for Sherilyn who will only drink if her milk is chocolate flavored, Alycia now loathes the sight of milk, except for the occasional fresh milk (which she likes only 1 particular brand). To ensure that they get enough calcium, I ensure that they eat enough green leafy vegetables, tofu, soy bean products, calcium-added multi-vitamins, yoghurt, cheese and yoghurt drinks from Dutch Lady, Nestle, Yakult, Vitagen, Calciyum.

Even Baby loves yoghurt drinks. In this picture, you’ll notice that her right eye is still a tad red, as it was the 2nd day post Chalazion eye surgery.

Dutch Lady Shine 0% fat yoghurt drink – this is our favorite fruit-flavored yoghurt drink from Dutch Lady. I don’t think it’s 0% fat-free.  Anything that’s laden with sugar is fattening, right?   I find it pretty expensive though and I will only splurge on a bottle or two once a week, something as a treat for the girls.

Fix Your Knee Pain With Food!

If you are constantly getting the nagging pain on your knee each time you run, walk or sit in certain positions, you may want to try adding these food to your diet: soy products, citrus fruits and fish!

In a study of 293 Australian adults, eating plenty of fruit reduced the risk of developing bone marrow lesions-a marker for worsening knee osteoarthritis and pain. The knee-friendliest fruits appear to be Vitamin C packed ones, like kiwi, orange, mango, grapefruit, and papaya. The researchers suspect it’s the Vitamin C in fruit that protects the knee joint and supporting structures.

People with knee pain reported less discomort and used fewer pain meds after eating soy protein everyday for three months, according to Oklahoma State University research. Soy is rich in isoflavones, plant hormones with anti-inflammatory properties. Study participants consumed a powdered soy drink mix that contained 40 grams of protein, but, says study author Bahram H. Arjmandi, Ph.D, you can get the same benefit from sources like flavored soy milk, edamame (baby soybeans), and soy burgers.

Many studies have found that fish and fish oil ease the joint pain and stiffness of rheumatiod arthritis. Now a study shows that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may block not only the chemicals that cause inflammation in osteoarthritis but also the roteins known to wear down knee cartilage. Eat two servings of oily fish (such as mackeral or salmon) weekly or take one gram of omega-3s in capsule form everyday, says nutrition researcher Artemis P. Simopoulos, MD.

Partake In The Next Biggest Loser Of Asia

For over a decade, the hubs has been telling me every now and then how determined he would be to shed some weight. Each time he announces confidently that he will be going on a low-carb diet and tells me that he will hit the gym or swimming pool intensively, I just knew that he would give up half way through. I think the only way to motivate him to be steadfast in his weight-loss journey is something that rewards him monetarily. One time, he even took some diet pills for men and that of course did not bring any desired result. Perhaps I should ask him to partake in the next Biggest Loser of Asia reality show!

Coffee’s New Perk

I have always thought that coffee is bad for your health. I am a coffee lover and though I am still breastfeeding, I still down a cup of thick decaff coffee with milk every morning.

Enjoy your morning brew – it may provide a hedge against cancer. A new study of 60,000 women conducted over 17 years shows that those who drank four or more cups of coffee a day cut their risk for endometrial cancer by 25%, compared with those who had a cup or less (Risk fell by 46% for obese women, who are most prone to developing the disease).

Men may benefit too. Other recent research suggests a 60% drop in the risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer among those who drink six or more cups of coffee daily, compared with men who don’t have any.

Fenugreek Chocolate Mix Drink

I bought this pack of Dr’s Choice fenugreek chocolate mix drink from Jaya Jusco the other day.  It’s sugar-free and quite palatable.  The pungent taste of fenugreek is not strong and if I wasn’t informed that there’s fenugreek added, I would never have known.  It’s best drank chilled, with ice cubes or hot like a hot chocolate drink.

Fenugreek is well-known to boost milk supply for lactating mothers. Here are the other benefits of Fenugreek:

Due to its estrogen-like properties, fenugreek has been found to help increase libido and lessen the effect of hot flashes and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS. In India and China it has also been used to treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, improve digestion, maintain a healthy metabolism, increase libido and male potency, cure skin problems (wounds, rashes and boils), treat sore throat, and cure acid reflux. Fenugreek also has a long history of use for the treatment of reproductive disorders, to induce labor, to treat hormonal disorders, to help with breast enlargement, and to reduce menstrual pain. Recent studies have shown that Fenugreek helps lower blood glucose and cholestrol levels, and may be an effective treatment for both type 1 and 2 diabetes. Fenugreek is also being studied for its cardiovascular benefits.

Sales Job Just Not My Cuppa

Some of the jobs that I know I will never excel in are jobs in sales. I don’t really have a gift of gab and I don’t fancy traveling. I prefer a job that allows me to work at the comforts of my own home in my pjs! I like what I’m doing now – a stay-at-home mum who blogs for money and sells stuff online. I have the best of both worlds. But don’t you envy me. It’s a tough life for me and I have to make a zillion sacrifices, including my precious, beauty sleep.

Well Deserving A Celebration Of Life

Baby C will be 2 years old tomorrow. My tough little cookie survived all the ordeals that happened to her during the past two years of her life. I pray to God that she never has to go through those unpleasant events again, ever. She really deserves a celebration of a brand new life tomorrow. Hubby has ordered a Barney cake for this hard core fan of Barney. I haven’t gotten her a birthday present yet as I have been pretty tied up with my online store lately. Perhaps I should get her a toy from an online shop, a Best Buy toy for my precious sweetie-pie.

Bug, Bug Go Away

Today is the first day that Sherilyn and Baby are showing the first signs of a cold.  It all started about a week ago when a friend who had her first signs of cold came to our house.  She played with the girls and got very near the girls.   The 6 days incubation period is up today and the first few symptoms showed up.  This morning, Sherilyn’s voice changed a little, her nose was stuffy and she started to cough a little too.  Baby was a little cranky, her goo is yellowish and she threw up a lot of phlegm while having her lunch today.   Well, dealing with a flu is nothing new to me.  After being a mother for almost 7 years, I am now better prepared in dealing with it.  I will try to stay away from the doctor as far as possible.  Antibiotics will only weaken the body and causes it to be resistant to it.  I have already fished out my trustworthy Esberitox and Echinacea tabs and have started feeding Sherilyn and Baby with it.  For Baby, I crushed the Esberitox and Echinacea in a pill crusher and added the powder into her drinks.   Praying hard that their body will be strong enough to battle with the bugs.
