Phiten Necklaces and Bracelets

When I met my youngest brother the other day, something very eye-catching on his neck and both his hands caught my attention. Knowing that my baby brother is not a vain pot (but a fitness freak with six packs alright), I knew that there must be a reason why he wore those sporty like necklace and bracelet.

I then asked him why he needed to wear those body accessories and what I found out was interesting.

What he was wearing is called Phiten necklace and Phiten bracelet.   They are supposedly worn to ease body aches as well as to promote good health.

Phiten necklaces are titanium accessories made by PHI-TEN Co., a Japanese technology company focused on products to promote good health. PHI-TEN claims these necklaces ease neck and shoulder pain, increase blood circulation, and relax your muscles. The key is allegedly the titanium in the necklaces, to which they attribute the power to realign the bioelectric current in your body. The purported health benefits aren’t limited to the neck and shoulders; you can wear these strands around your wrist or ankle to enhance athletic ability and reduce fatigue.

Phiten necklaces have recently been made popular by the sponsorship of the MLB. Many well-known and admired baseball players have been sporting Phiten necklaces at games, from Joba Chamberlain of the New York Yankees to Josh Beckett of the Boston Red Sox. Their popularity is not limited to baseball though: pro golfer Sergio García and marathonist Paula Radcliffe sport the necklaces, as does softball Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch.

How do Phiten necklaces work?

Phiten necklaces are made of titanium because this is a metal that conducts electricity well. The idea is that stiff muscles and fatigue may be caused by disruptions in the flow of your body’s bioelectric current. Bioelectric current just refers to the small amount of electricity running through your body (for example, nerves transmitting sensations or neurons firing synapses to process thoughts). As the claim goes, placing these pieces of titanium on the body will stabilize your current, thus helping your body run better.

After  reading how good Phiten can supposedly bring about to our body, I am now very tempted to wear them on my wrists too, to improve endurance when I run in the morning as well as to ease the stiff neck, shoulders and backache that I get.  Plus I like the sporty like design of the bracelets too. The next time I meet my brother, I will ask him to get me 2 Phiten bracelets!

4-Year Old Girl Who Is Addicted To iPad

There is this 4YO girl in Cass’ kindy who would cry in school every other day. She would cry when her mother or father drops her in school and refuses to let her bring the iPad into the school.  If she is refused of bringing the iPad into the school, she would wail for hours until she falls asleep!  According to the class teacher, this girl would sleep in class every other day.  The mother told the teacher that her daughter would only fall asleep at 4ish am on most days.  The teacher has voiced out to the mother to stop sending the girl to the kindy as it is a waste of her money for her daughter spends most of her time crying, pining for the iPad and when she gets too tired after a big melt down, she would then snooze off in class!

This is a classic example of a child who has gotten severely bitten and addicted to a  a new age technology driven gadget.  My kids can spend the whole day playing with my iPad and laptop but I put my foot down and forced them to shut down the gadget after a max. of 2 hours.  It is scary to see them being so hooked to the iPad and laptop to the point that they cannot even hear what I say or instruct them to do.  When they get overly absorbed in their gadgets, they are totally oblivious to what is happening around them! Most of my screaming at the kids are related to the iPad, laptop and the idiot box, aka TV.

It is not easy to help the child kick off this addiction but something must be done by the parents before this child, who is an only child and understandably spoilt, becomes spoilt rotten beyond help and grows up to be a wayward and troubled child.

Avocado Smoothie and Avocado Health Benefits

One of the fruits that is almost always available at our home is avocado. The mil loves avos. So do I. And we are training the girls to love avos too.  They are starting to like avo spread on their bread, avo salad, avo sushi and avo smoothie.

Here’s the avocado-milk smoothie that I made and it is really creamy, buttery, soothing, delish and filling. It can even be taken as a replacement meal, thus can help to promote weight loss.  My girls commented that it was too creamy but I liked it and will definitely make this smoothie again for lunch!

Ingredients:

1 ripe avocado
3 tablespoons of cold fresh milk
Half cup of water
Ice cubes to be blended (optional)
Put everything into my Shimono food processor and swirl it for less than a minute.
Add ice cube (optional) and serve!

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Avocados are also considered as one of the healthiest foods in the planet because they contain in excess of 25 essential nutrients, including vitamin A, B, C, E, & K, copper, iron, phosporus, magnesium, and potassium. Avocados also contain fiber, protein, and several beneficial phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol, glutathione and lutein, which may protect against various disease and illness.

(1) Healthy brain: can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s.

Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages.

(2) Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL.

Avocados’ vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is a harbinger of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters.

(3) Pregnancy: Folic acid is commonly recommended for pregnant women to help the fetus develop its brain and other vital organs. But some health experts consider synthetically extracted folic acid a problem. They recommend using natural folate for its folic acid content instead.

Folate also reduces stroke risk, according to a study of people who eat folate rich foods.

(4) Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

(5) Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more than banana, with omega-3 and oleic acid are beneficial toward reducing blood pressure.

(6) Blood sugar: Avocado’s monounsaturated fats can prevent or reverse insulin resistance, a source of type 2 diabetes. The high soluble fiber of avocado helps prevent blood sugar spikes.

(7) Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is considered the basis of most non-contagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents.

(8) Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione.

(9) Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients.

(10) Cancer: Avocados can help protect against prostate and breast cancers.

(11) Avocados contain glutathione, a powerful antioxidants that helps fight free radicals in the body.

(12) Cure bad breath : Avocados are one of the best natural mouth wash and bad breath remedies. It is cleanses intestine which is the real cause of coated tongue and bad breath.

(13) Skin Care : The avocado oil is added in many cosmetics because of its ability to nourish the skin and make your skin glow. It also aids in treating psoriasis, a skin disease that causes skin redness and irritation

Refreshing Mango Cucumber Smoothie For Someone With Swollen Gums

Sherilyn is having a swollen gum on the right side. It is so swollen and painful that she could barely talk properly.  She has been having a very painful time chewing her food too.  I cut some Japanese cucumbers and mangoes for her to eat but she could not even chew them without feeling the throb in her gums.  So I blended the cucumbers and mangoes into a refreshing smoothie for her and now, she could swallow her fruits and veggie in a jiffy without any pain.

Mango cucumber chia seeds smoothie… very sweet, soothing and refreshing indeed!

Yesterday, we brought her to the dentist to have her gums checked.  My mum’s guess was right. Her first molar is sprouting out, thus the terrible swell and pain on her gums.

Dreams For Our Girls

The other day, we watched a travel documentary on TV. It was about a group of Asian students studying at a university in the UK traveling Europe on a student travel tours package. My eldest daughter asked me if she could do the same when she goes to university in future. I sure wish that my hubs and I could afford sending all three of our girls abroad to study. It is my wish to see them get their tertiary education abroad and let them tour the world. That is why the hubs and I are working as hard as cows so that we could provide the best that we can to our girls.
