A Very Bloated Sherilyn

Since infant, Sherilyn has been a very constipated child.  When she was a newborn,  she would only poo poo once in 8-10 days, which got me worried sick.  But when she finally poo pooed, it was explosive and she normally spent a good 15-30 minutes pooping lots.  All these years up until now, Sherilyn needs to drink lots of water, prune juice, eat papaya and dragon fruit to assist her with an easy bowel movement.   Every now and then, she even needed enema to induce her to move her bowels.

Lately, Sherilyn’s appetite has been really bad.  She used to love drinking milk but for the past 1 month, she avoided milk and when she drank her milk, she would take forever to finish a cup of 6 ounces milk. This fler just doesn’t seem to get hungry at all lately. When she didn’t want to eat her dinner one night, we punished her and didn’t give her any milk before she went to bed. I thought she would be famished the next morning but I was wrong. The next morning, she sat at the dining table daydreaming, with the cup of milk untouched for almost an hour (and she was already late for school) until I flashed the cane at her. When it comes to meal times, she would need 2-3 hours every day to painfully swallow her food. I suspected that something wasn’t quite right with her.

Lately, she has also been complaining of having tummy aches.  Last week, the hubs and I were shocked when we saw blood in the toilet bowl during one of her poopie sessions.  There was quite an amount of blood and when asked if she felt pain at her bottom or in her tummy, she said no. This got the hubs and I to be concerned. A few days later, we brought her to see the paed. Our paed touched her tummy and commented that it was bloated and hard. You see, Sherilyn has a habit of holding back her poop… even when she keeps farting, she would resist going to the toilet. This happens when she’s either too lazy to sit at the throne or when she’s overly engrossed playing or watching TV. According to our paed, the poop have accummulated in her intestines, thus the bloatedness, tummy ache, frequent flatulance and the lack of appetite.

She was given Duphalac syrup (Lactul Solution) by our paed. She has to drink the solution thrice a day, until she gets a diarrhea, after which the solution can be reduced to once a day. Once she has a regular pattern of bowel movement, the medication can be stopped. Frankly, I am not really keen in feeding her with laxatives. I may try feeding her with psyllium husk (natural fibre) one of these days because this has helped me tremendously in my bowel movement.

  1. oh no…blood in the toilet bowl? I would freak out. Is probiotic good? How many times do you give Sher dragonfruit in a week? BTW, i heard that the seeds from the dragon fruit would stay inside the intestines 🙁 I also give Ashley dragonfruit as it helps with her bowel movement….2 fruits a week.

I have a suggestion, as it works for my daughters.
I make my daughters sit on the potty in front of the TV. So, everyday, at almost the same timing, i want them to sit on potty to poo while they watch their favourite cartoon on TV. It become a routine after that, so they poo almost the time everyday.

yea… agree abt the timing. My 3 boys hv their various timings too..
one after dinner, one after lunch..and the last, either after lunch or dinner.

But..there could be something restricting her guts? Mebbe u can chk it out?

I kind off have the same problem. My doctor recommend me to drink fiber every day. According to the direction you are supposed to drink it 3 times a day but then I only drink it in the morning because I try and eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.. Psyllium husk is a good option too.

I used to eat the calsium magnisium pills from AMWAY and had two a day and after that it comes naturally. Then you can reduce that to one pill a day. I know Calcium pills is supposed to cause constipation too but then many people including me that tried this pill works.

sher is really a character eh. poor girl for her constipation, i know coz i’m also a constipator (if there is ever such a word).

i used to use duphalac on rye li too when she had an episode like this when she was over a yr old to 2 yrs plus but thank god, i don’t need this anymore.

i, myself is consuming physillium husk since early this year and i noticed that at times although i have skipped a day or 2 without doing the big one, i still don’t seem to have the urge. i think i have lazy bowels and sher, if don’t train at a young age, she may end up like me, with lazy bowels too.

am planning to do a detox programme once i’ve stopped bfg.

    good luck with her diet!

if bloated and hard tummy is due to lack of bowel movements, don’t you think that psyllium husk (all fibre) will only add bulk in her intestines and cause her faeces to compact even more? Won’t this worsen the situation? such a drastic situation, I feel she does needs that laxative to move the shit out of her system. And more liquids! Just imagine a blocked drain. You need to clear it first, right?

Oh I noticed that you guys buy yogurt at home too I am not sure if they have this in Malaysia but then have a yogurt call fiber one from yoplait and it is really yummy like any other yogurt of course sweet so your daughter might eat it and it will help with constipation.

If not a cup of normal yogurt a day will help her too (when I was in Malaysia my doc recommended yogurt for health benefits plus constipation) so I bought a yogurt maker and the mixture and made my own yogurt that can be a thought for you too if you all consume a lot of yogurt.

p/s: Don’t mean to sound like an expert but all these are from experience 🙂

  9. I had the same problem with malaika a few months ago. I was sooo obessed with her poo-poo. Then it becomes better now. 🙂

Yogurt, pears and grapes are great natural laxative. Give it a try.
