Breastfeeding Indeed Helps To Burn Off Calories

Ever since I stopped nursing Baby about a month ago, my weight has increased by 1kg. I find that my appetite has decreased and I don’t feel hungry as often as I used to for the past 2yrs 8 months when I was breastfeeding Baby. I used to munch a lot on snacks but my weight would not shoot up. Now, though I exercise and reduce my calorie intake, my weight just won’t budge. It’s stagnant at 45kg. I was 44kg before Baby was conceived. It was down to 43.5kg at one point of time recently but it shot up again after my holiday in Penang and Ipoh. No matter how hard I try now, the 1kg just won’t budge. I have even increased the duration of my workout every morning but darn it, the red needle on my scale just won’t move to the left, why I wonder? I guess age is catching up with me. As we age, our body’s metabolic rate slows down too. I guess I’ll just have to accept my pre-40 year- old body as it is. After all 45kg for a 158cm height frame ain’t too bad eh?

Not Really Weaned Just Yet!

It was only a fluke and lasted only for a day that Baby didn’t want my boops. The next day, she was back to herself again, searching for my boops and getting addicted to them again, sigh… I notice that whenever my parents are here or whenever there are other people in the house, she would feel ashamed of showing her addiction to my boops. She would go near me, look at her comfort tools and say “shame shame” to me quietly. After my parents left, she was back to usual self again, climbing up my lap and conveniently latch on to her comfort tools. I’ve been telling her that she’s a big girl now and cannot drink mummy’s milk anymore. I’ve told her many times that mummy has no more milk for her but that is not deterring her a wee bit. She just wants to feel close to me. I wonder when she will ever be weaned off.

How To Increase Breast Milk Production

When Baby was a newborn, I used to google search a lot on how to increase breast milk production as I did not have an outlet that produces milk abundantly like a fountain, like some mothers do! I found out about Milkmaid tea made from fenugreek seeds and I took it religiously for 2 years! Ever since my menses resumed recently, my milk supply has decreased drastically. Though it’s now almost dried up and shrunken, Baby still finds a lot of comfort latching on to her comfort tools like a pacifier!

Almost Weaned!

Baby is 80% weaned off my boops!! Last night was the first night she slept oh so soundly without fussing and without searching for my boops. This morning when I offered her my boops, she took a look at her comfort tools and then turned her head away! I didn’t expect her to reject her comfort tools, the tools which she had found so much satisfaction, comfort and solace in for 29 months of her life. While I am really happy that I can wean her off my boops without any tears and sleepless nights, I am nevertheless a tad sad that my Baby is growing up. I will definitely miss our moments together.

No More Let-Down And Partially Weaned Off My Boops

Ever since my menses resumed after a 28-month hiatus due to breastfeeding, my milk supply has reduced drastically. Though I still have a teeny weeny amount of milk, I don’t get any let-down reflex anymore now. My boops have also shrunken now 🙁 The good thing is Baby is partially weaned off my boops. The only time she wants her ‘comfort tools’ is at night when she sleeps and when she wakes up from her afternoon nap. It is for mere comfort sucking now and not to satiate her hunger pangs. My next goal now is to wean Baby off my boops totally and get rid of her addiction to my boops to gain comfort.

Very Heavy Menstruation

My first menstruation after 27 months has been tremendously heavy, though no pain at all. I have always had heavy periods. But this time, it is exceptionally heavy. It’s so heavy that I have to change my pad every hourly. Last night I stained the bed badly. Fortunately there’s a plastic sheet underneath the bedsheet and the blood was prevented from seeping into the mattress. I had expected this first menses after 27 months of ‘drought’ to be really heavy. It’s like a heavy downpour after going through a period of drought! I weighed myself this morning and was surprised to see that I am now 1.5kg lighter! WOW, I can’t believe the blood that I had lost is 1.5kg heavy!!

Finally……!!

After breastfeeding Baby for 2 years 4 months and after wondering and waiting anxiously when my menses will ever come back, it finally came back today! I am still breastfeeding Baby, though my milk supply has decreased drastically for the past 2 weeks. I think the milk supply decrease has some connection with the menses coming again. She is now sucking for comfort and not to satiate her hunger. I am still trying to wean her off my boops but it looks like it’s going to be a TALL order as this fella is really hooked on my boops, the tools that she has found comfort in all her life.

No wonder I have been seeing all the PMS symptoms for the past few days – lack of energy and stamina to run longer in the morning and zits appearing on my flawless face.

It feels weird wearing a pad again today. Those pads that have been sitting in my bathroom cupboard for almost 3 years have been fished out this morning… finally!

Another Mastitis

I was attacked by another bout of Mastitis yesterday and am still feeling the pain today. I was really exhausted 2 nights ago, overslept (I normally wake up between 3-5am to change her diaper and feed her) and did not switch sides to let Baby suckle on my right boop.  Yesterday morning, my nightie was wet and I realized that I was leaking milk (which hardly happens now after 17 months of breastfeeding). I touched my boop and gawd, it felt hard, full and slightly painful.  Hours passed by and the pain gradually intensified and my right boop hurts terribly.  I kept asking Baby to suckle on that boop but somehow, this fler just prefers the left boop.  She kept pushing herself away from my right boop each time she’s placed there and kept gravitating to the left boop!  See, even toddlers have preference over which side of mummy’s boops to latch on! I wonder if the milk tastes different from each breast haha!  I’ve been popping on double dosage of garlic pills with Lecithin and I hope the pain and lump go away by today.

My Mastitis Has Cleared Up

After 3 days of torture, the Mastitis on my left boop cleared up completely yesterday, yipee!!  Here’s what I did :

1)  Let Baby suckle on the left boop longer and also the whole night *looooooong sigh*.
2)  Massaged my left boop with ice-cubes 3 times a day.
3)  Popped Garlic pills with added Lecithin. I read from the kellymom.com breastfeeding site that Lecithin will help unblock the plugged duct.
4)  Popped Vitamin C.
5)  Popped Echinacea tab.
6)  Don’t wear bra, especially tight ones. I find that wearing bra induces the Mastitis in my case. But don’t get me wrong… I still wear bra whenever I jog hehe.  For outings, I have special outfits with built-in bra pads, so I don’t have to wear bra 😀

I also discovered that my recent frequent Mastitis attack was caused by delayed emptying of my boops. This is because I’ve been feeding Baby formula milk, so she no longer suckles so frequently.  I just have a hunch that I will get another attack of Mastitis but I think I am more prepared to handle it the next time.  At the onset of a slight pain in my boop, I will practise the above measures, especially no. #1 above.   I wonder how I am  ever going to wean Baby off my boops, how you tell me?

Attacked By Painful Mastitis Again

I am attacked by a third nasty Mastitis and this time, I am down with fever. The pain and swell this time round is at the top of my left boop. The previous 2 times, it was on the lower left boop. It’s so painful this time that I could barely jog yesterday morning.  Being a determined fitness freak, I went ahead to jog but had to cut short my jogging session. Throughout my jogging session, I had to cup my right hand on the top left boop to reduce the pain… coz when the boop moved, it hurt like hell. When I returned from jogging, I had chills, bodyache, headache and felt feverish. I felt so cold that I had to bathe in warm water, something which I will only do whenever I have fever and also during my confinement. I checked my temperature and it was 38.3 degrees Celsius. I was feeling really lethargic, achy all over, felt like weeping and only wanted to sleep.

After getting my maid to feed Baby C breakfast, I put her in the playpen and pushed the playpen next to my bed and I just lay there to rest with a blanket over my shoulders.  I also put ice-cubes on the swollen boop but that did not reduce the swelling. I continued to put ice-cubes over my left boob this morning. I also popped 4 Panadol Actifast yesterday and thank God the fever subsided this morning.  However, the pain hasn’t quite yet subsided and I could only do brisk walking instead of running.  I even went to do marketing (by foot) and carried home 2 heavy bags of veggie, fish, bread and take-away noodles!

I did a google search this morning to see how I can treat my Mastitis naturally.  I found out that popping Echinacea, raw garlic and high doses of Vitamin C can help fight the infection.  I have popped an Echinacea tab and some vitamins this morning.  According to the kellymom.com breastfeeding website, taking a Lecithin supplement can also help combat recurrent plugged milk ducts.   I may get my maid to prepare some raw garlic for me to eat them together with my noodles later.   I’ll also get some Lecithin tabs from the pharmacy tomorrow.  I used to take a brand of garlic pills that has added Lecithin, so I’ll get a bottle of that.   I hope I don’t need antibiotics to treat the Mastitis, knowing very well that antibiotics will cause more harm than good to me.
