Toe Nail Yanked Off

Baby has a bad habit of peeling her finger nails and toe nails with her hands. I think this bad habit from her favorite che che had rubbed off on her and the consequences have been disastrous and painful.

Check out what she had done to her little toe nail with her own hands:

Her little toe bandaged up for 2 weeks…

…the toe nail was hanging precariously and loosely on her tiny toe, eeeeuuuuuu!! It was darn painful and this girl would scream whenever that foot was wet during wash up and shower.

And finally one night when I removed her socks from her foot, the toe nail came off on its own…

This painful episode has taught this rascal a lesson and each time I see her peeling and fidgeting with her finger and toe nails, I would scare the shit out of her with this grim reminder LOL!

Cassandra’s Little Prayer To God

Every night before going to bed, I will pray with my 3 girls. This morning, Sherilyn told me that she prayed with her baby sister the night before as I was still working on the computer. Sherilyn told me that this was Baby’s prayer:

Dear Father Jesus In Heaven
Please don’t let daddy crash his car again
Please don’t let earth quake come again
Please don’t let me leak urine again
Please don’t let me have urine infection again
Please don’t let me have surgery again
AMEN!

I burst out laughing at what Sherilyn had told me. I then asked Baby if it’s true and she repeated the prayer to me. I am really glad that my baby girl can pray on her own now. And I am glad that her first 2 requests from God is always to ask Him to not let his daddy crash his car again (hubs had a bout of car accidents over a year ago, which left my #2 very worried about her daddy’s safety) and not to let another earth quake come. My girls prayed for the victims of Japan after the earth quake and they too were traumatized after the terrible earth quake.

What does your child pray for every night?

Quail’s Eggs Wonders

Baby prefers quail’s eggs over chicken eggs. She calls them baby eggs and is intrigued that the eggs are so tiny and cute. I feed her with eggs everyday so that this petite girl is pumped up with enough protein. This girl’s waist is so tiny that most of her pants often drop off her waist and she’s wearing clothes meant for much younger girls! On some days, I give her free-range chicken eggs and on other days she gets to eat quail’s eggs. She likes her eggs with loads of butter or a dash of organic soy sauce. For me, I love quail’s eggs in tong sui or in skewers from those ‘loke loke’ vans 😀

She loves shelling the eggs too…

Food For Thought

The quail egg is prized as a dietary and healing food. It is recorded that Chinese medical practitioners have used quail eggs for thousands of years to remedy aliments such as rhinitis, asthma, hay fever, spasmodic cough along with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. More recently the benefits are found in quail egg capsules sold online.

Quail eggs are packed with vitamins and minerals. Even with their small size, their nutritional value is three to four times greater than chicken eggs. Quail eggs contain 13 percent proteins compared to 11 percent in chicken eggs. Quail eggs also contain 140 percent of vitamin B1 compared to 50 percent in chicken eggs. In addition, quail eggs provide five times as much iron and potassium. Unlike chicken eggs, quail eggs have not been know to cause allergies or diathesis. Actually they help fight allergy symptoms due to the ovomucoid protein they contain.

Health Benefits
Regular consumption of quail eggs helps fight against many diseases. They are a natural combatant against digestive tract disorders such as stomach ulcers. Quail eggs strengthen the immune system, promote memory health, increase brain activity and stabilize the nervous system. They help with anemia by increasing the level of hemoglobin in the body while removing toxins and heavy metals. The Chinese use quail eggs to help treat tuberculosis, asthma, and even diabetes. If you are a sufferer of kidney, liver, or gallbladder stones quail eggs can help prevent and remove these types of stones.

Complementary Benefits
Children eating quail eggs are less inclined to suffer from infectious diseases than other children do. In men, quail eggs provide the prostate gland with phosphorus, proteins, and vitamins that can be a powerful stimulant for sexual potency. Women find that the egg improves skin color and strengthens hair. This is why quail eggs are in facial and in hair care products.

What On Earth Was That??

I got a major shock of my life when I saw this stuff hanging out from Baby’s anus about 2 weeks ago. After she poo pooed, she complained that her anus was itchy. I took a look and this worm-like, half-digested veggie look-alike, intestine-looking stuff made me sick to the pit of my guts. For a moment, I thought it was the watercress veggie that she ate the day before the incident. This fella chomped down quite a bit of this veggie the day before as watercress is the only leafy veggie that she truly likes. I never have to coerce her to eat watercress.    On touching the dangling stuff, it felt like a body-tissue. I also had suspicion that it was her piles. When hubs saw it, we were both pretty convinced that the part of the dangling stuff that was black in color looked like sutures and we thought that it was part of her small intestines. Baby had 2 major surgeries 2 years ago. The 2nd surgery was to un-kink the guts at the lower part of her stomach, which was a result of a complication from the 1st surgery (urinary tract surgery).

I quickly snapped pix of the stuff and emailed it to Baby’s surgeon in Penang. I also gave him an SOS call and spoke to him. He assured me that it was not a guts issue. Not body tissue issue too. Guts are not so thin, for sure.  Dr N suspected it was veggie or worm!  I was perplexed and reeling with shock and worry. The dangling stuff did not cause Baby any pain or discomfort but when I tried to touch it, she would scream and said it’s painful, which made me even more worried. I quickly fixed an appointment for Baby to see her nephrologist at a private hospital the next day.

Fast forward 2 hours later. Baby followed her grand-aunt to her unit below ours. When she came back, I brought her to her potty and washed her up.  Upon touching her down-under, I could not feel the dangling stuff anymore!  I lay Baby on the bed and inspected that part. The dangling stuff was no where to be seen anymore! Amazing! Could it have moved back inside? Whatever. As long as it’s no longer there and it’s not causing Baby any pain, discomfort or bleeding, I’ll just close the case. I shall continue to monitor her and try to keep constipation at bay from my baby.

Has anyone seen such dangling stuff or experienced such dangling issue before?

Beating Constipation With Lots Of Greens

Ever since she went through a few episodes of very painful and uncomfortable constipation, Baby has finally resigned to the fact that veggie is good for her and can help her to poo poo 😀 No matter what we have for lunch and dinner, I always make sure that there are some greens on her plate. I will chop the veggie up into small bits and put them together with her other favorite food, like topping her slice of pizza with mustard green…

One time, she even suggested that I chop up some veggie and put them into the pancake batter! I thought yeah, what a fantastic idea! I shall try that just for her one day and I’ll bet she’ll eat them coz if she does not, I’ll scare her with the enema haha!

A very constipated toddler

At 3YO, Baby is still a very constipated toddler. Though she eats fruits and veggie everyday, she still has issue with constipation. On days that she suffers from painful constipation, she will look crestfallen the whole day until the poop pops out 😀

On constipation days, I will force her to gulp down cups and cups of water. Once, she was whining and crying for hours because of the discomfort. And she got so tired that she dozed off in a standing position (she dared not sit, lest the position prevents the poop from popping out)…..

For the past one week, she has been able to poop everyday! That’s because I give her fresh orange juice from an orange everyday, on top of the fruits that she eats every morning. Plus, she now knows how to ‘concentrate’ and push her poop out, after having gone through very painful episodes of constipation. BUT…. this rascal still has a weird habit of pooping in her diapers. The moment I bring her to the throne, she will shriek and yell her lungs out. I wonder why??

Lots of Greens To Combat Constipation

Baby is a very constipated child. Just the other day, I had to use enema to stimulate her bowel to move… which traumatized her very much. Baby hates the enema but sometimes I have no choice but to force use  the enema on her when I know that the hard rock poop is stuck at the edge of her rectum and causing her a lot of pain and discomfort.  Her surgeon had warned us many times to keep Baby free from constipation as this will cause a UTI attack.  Enema always works but it takes the whole family to hold her down, in order for me to squirt the liquid into her anus!

I am now trying to include lots of greens into Baby’s diet, preferably twice a day, with lots of fruits and freshly squeezed orange juice and I think it’s helping. Her stools have been soft and nice for the past few days 😀

A plate full of greens….I was surprised that Baby even liked steamed ladies fingers, drizzled with a little Japanese citrus salad sauce.

Post Surgery MAG3 Scan Tomorrow

Tomorrow’s the day. The day that I have been dreading for almost 2 years. Exactly 2 years ago, we were preparing for Baby’s surgery, which was held on 5 May 2009, the day that I will never forget. After an eventful stay in the hospital for 3 weeks where Baby was cut up twice, we were told that she will need to do another MAG3 scan 2 years post surgery to see the kidney function and flow of urine again. Though the 1st MAG3 scan 2 years ago showed that the dilated right kidneys on both moities were functioning well and the post operation MCUG scan showed no more kidney reflux, I am nevertheless worried, very very worried of all the ‘what ifs?’

Wish me luck. My motherly instinct tells me that Baby would behave well tomorrow during the procedure. I have promised Baby a big big rainbow ice cream and yolipop if she does not cry. Wish us luck. Cassandra needs lots of luck and prayers for a smooth sailing and yell-free session during the insertion of the brandula on her hand, a fuss-free, cry-free, yell-free and whine-free half an hour when the procedure is on-going in the procedures room of the hospital. I pray that she will lie still for the half an hour when the radioactive dye is injected and goes round the urinary tract so that a clear video can be captured. The procedure will be unsuccessful if she moves and struggles and probably will cost double if it has to be repeated. It costs over RM2K for a procedure and this is not claimable from our insurer.

I hate the thought of donning on the heavy, armor-look like long vest to protect myself against radiation while I am with my baby in the room. And I dislike being in the cancer center of a hospital. It makes me feel very down when I see cancer patients.

to be continued….

Health Freak Baby

Like mummy like baby… and it is all a matter of starting them from young and training the taste buds. I’ll bet no 3yo toddler would want to go near sprouted wheat bread, which has a rather ‘raw’ taste but not my baby. She can chomp down a whole slice of toasted sprouted wheat bread with homemade kaya and even asked for more!

And I’ll bet even some adults are lazy to chew the chewy sprouted wheat on the bread but my baby enjoys gnawing on them!

Maple Syrup Health Benefits

My brother and sil returned from Canada recently and gave us a few bottles of maple syrup, maple butter and maple cookies. My mom did a google search on maple syrup and found out that this nice smelling syrup is more than just sweetness.

Maple syrup is one of the many wonders of the world. When you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, don’t forget to consider using maple syrup which contains fewer calories and a higher concentration of minerals than honey.

Food For Thought:

Cancer Prevention
Researchers have suggested that the compounds contained within pure maple syrup offer cancer prevention benefits. A study performed at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in Canada revealed that the antioxidant capabilities of pure maple syrup were effective at inhibiting the damage that is caused by nitric oxide. The ability to inhibit overproduction of nitric oxide will also prevent the proliferation of cancer cells. This study also suggests the cancer fighting properties are greater if the syrup is of darker color rather than a clear color.

Diabetes
Recent studies also suggest that the consumption of pure maple syrup may also be effective in lowering blood glucose levels. According to United Press International, pure maple syrup contains a significant concentration of abscisic acid. Abscisic acid is a chemical that promotes insulin secretion of the pancreas and increases the insulin sensitivity of fat cells. The presence of abscisic acid and the qualities it possesses allow pure maple syrup to be an effective treatment against diabetes.

Cardiac Benefits
Pure maple syrup is very rich in many essential vitamins and minerals, especially zinc. A study performed by the Department of Medicine at the University of Turku in Finland suggests there is a direct relationship between low serum zinc levels and incidence of cardiovascular heart disease. The results of the study confirmed that low serum zinc levels is a risk factor for cardiovascular heart disease in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. The zinc concentration in pure maple syrup can regulate serum zinc levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular heart disease.

Men Benefit From Maple Syrup
Maple syrup may help to support reproductive health and provides special benefits for men. Zinc is concentrated more highly in the prostate than in any other human tissue, and low levels of zinc in this gland relate to a higher risk for prostate cancer. In fact, zinc is a mineral used therapeutically by health care practitioners to help reduce prostate size. Manganese may also play a role in supporting mens health since, as a catalyst in the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol, it also participates in the production of sex hormones, thus helping to benefit reproductive health.

Here’s Baby enjoying maple butter spread on a slice of wholemeal bread, cut into strips.
