Baby Loves Esberitox!

Ever since we discovered that Esberitox (made from the purple flower Echinacea) is effective in treating colds and flus, everyone in the family has been relying on this ‘wonder pill’. I swear by it and I think it works very effectively in treating colds and runny nose. For almost a year, none of us have gone to the doctor’s, thanks to Esberitox. There is always a box or two of Esberitox in our kitchen cabinet. Two weeks ago, Sherilyn caught the flu bug, then Alycia and then my helper got bitten too last week. But none of us went to the doctor’s because I gave them my trusted Esberitox. Baby was not spared and 2 days ago, she got bitten by the bug too. I fed her with Esberitox too and she’s now recovering.  My girls love Esberitox and they think it’s candies! This morning I left a box of Esberitox on the dining table after giving 1 pill to Baby.

Just a moment ago I could not find it and I asked my helper where it was. “Dyah, di mana Esberitox? Pagi ni, I letak di meja” Upon hearing this, Baby who was watching TV sprang out from her seat and excitedly told me this “here here, I put Esberitox in my drawer!”.… and then ran as fast as she could to my bedroom, opened my her drawer and there it was the box of Esberitox… sitting in the drawer, which has rubbish (used papers, blunt color pencils, used plastic bags, plastic papers that I had torn from my Pos Laju flyer bags, etc) stuffed to the brim.  I tried throwing some of the rubbish a few times but she screamed blue murder each time I touched her things.  All the things that she likes are stuffed into this drawer!  I burst out laughing at this super cute fella.  She has been collecting rubbish and stealing her sisters things and  then stuffed them into my drawer and now she has dominated my drawer… and she claims that the drawer is hers!  She’s too cute.  I think she wants a drawer of her own just like her sisters.

Leaking Urine?

I have been potty training Baby for the past 1 week and I realized a little problem. While Baby does not wee wee ‘in full’ in her panties, I find that her panties will be slightly wet every half hourly. I suspect that she is leaking urine and she is not even aware of it.  I really can’t recall if my #1 and #2 were like this last time.  I had read from somewhere that kids with a history of Kidney Reflux will have a problem with potty training.  And I recall Baby’s surgeon asking us if Baby’s diaper is wet all the time as he has a patient with Kidney Reflux who wets her panties all the time too.  I must ask Baby’s surgeon if this is a problem when we next see him.

Another Eye Chalazion?

Yesterday, Baby woke up with a tad swell on her left upper eye lid AGAIN! This left eye was swollen about a month ago. I had diligently applied hot water compress on that eye for about 3 weeks and the swelling was gone. A week ago, I decided to stop the hot water compress just to see if the swell will re-appear. True enough, the swell re-appeared!! I guess I just have to be extra diligent in applying the hot water compress on Baby’s eyes twice a day during her bath time for the next few months or perhaps years!! This Baby of mine seems to have too many health issues, SIGH…….

Unisoy Instant Organic Soya Milk Powder (Sugar-Free)

Baby seems to tolerate soy bean milk better than cow’s milk.  These days, I have stopped feeding her with Pediasure.  First, Pediasure is for picky eaters / kids who do not eat well / underweight kids.  Now, Baby eats everything  and is gaining weight.  Second, Pediasure is getting more and more expensive.   I have since switched her to soy bean milk and Dutch Lady 123.  She drinks more soy bean milk than cow’s milk though. I find that she has a tendency to throw up or have the urge to throw up if she drinks cow’s milk.  I always dilute the milk so that it is not so thick, not so sweet and more palatable.

Of all the brands of instant soy milk powder, I find that the sugar-free and organic ones from Unisoy (made in Singapore) the most palatable.  The powder is also easy to dissolve  as the soy beans are de-skinned. Baby likes this brand too and has no problem drinking this.  Unisoy is available at Jusco and certain mini marts.

Restless Because Of Constipation

Despite taking psyllium husk and Duphalac (laxative) everyday, Baby still has constipation, though not as bad as without these laxatives. Yesterday, she did not move her bowels. Each time she does not move her bowels for a day, she will be restless the entire night. She will toss and turn and wake up really early the next morning. This morning she got up at 5:30am. I knew her tummy felt uncomfortable because of the unmoved bowels. If she still can’t move her bowels today, I will resort to enema. Well, it’s between the devil and the deep blue sea. If she doesn’t poo poo, she runs a risk of getting UTI again. I pray that she will poo poo today! Dear Lord, please help Cassandra to have an explosive poo poo today, amen!

Don’t Overeat Bananas

Baby is no fruit lover. It is quite a torture – for her and for me when fruits are served to her. Thankfully she likes bananas. She loves them so much that she can chomp down 2 pieces of large bananas in one sitting. She even has space in her tummy for a 3rd one but of course I’d say no, lest she pukes them out. Also, too much bananas is NOT good for your body as bananas are high in potassium.

Having too much potassium in the blood is called hyperkalemia; having too little is known as hypokalemia. Older people have a greater risk of hyperkalemia because our kidneys are less efficient at eliminating potassium as we age.

Excess potassium in the body suspends the function of electrical impulses in the body, which causes the heart to stop. Sometimes, this can cause partial or complete paralysis while leaving the heart unaffected. The mortality rate when hyperkalemia is not treated immediately is as high as 67 percent!

When Baby’s kidney reflux was not resolved before the surgery last year, our paed used to advise us not to overfeed Baby with food high in potassium.

I always stick to the adage “eat everything in moderation” and you will be fine!

Hot Compress To Prevent Eye Chalazion

After applying hot compress on Baby’s swollen left eye for more than a week, the swelling had subsided.  The ophthalmologist had advised us that I should apply hot compress on both Baby’s eyes to prevent occurrence of eye chalazion as she has a high tendency of getting this eye condition.  All I did was to soak a clean hanky with hot water during bath time and apply it on Baby’s eyes twice a day, 2 minutes each time.  I guess I have to incorporate this tedious regimen into Baby’s bath time for the next few years, sigh!

Another Eye Chalazion

Remember I posted earlier that Baby’s other eye was swollen and the ophthalmologist said that one of the oil glands is blocked? He prescribed her with some eye drops but after more than 2 weeks, it still looks a tad swollen. I am worried that the eye drops alone will not bring the swelling down. I am worried sick that she may need another eye chalazion surgery!!! Oh no, oh God, please spare Baby from another surgery. If the swelling does not subside by next week, off she’ll go to the ophthalmologist again next week. Please Lord, please spare Baby from another surgery!!

Last To Be Down

Baby was finally bitten by the virulent bug that had bitten everyone in the family and she’s the last one in the family to be down. She has phlegm and a slight stuffy nose. She had low-grade fever (37.5 to 37.8 degrees) for about 3 days and I finally brought her to the paed 2 days ago when my hubs and mil kept pestering me to bring her for a check-up, just to be safe. This paed is not pro-oral meds knowing very well Baby’s medical history.  As usual, he only prescribed Baby with Ventolin, Iliadin nasal drops (which I didn’t use on her as she got better on the same day we brought her to the paed) and PCM (only fed her with 2 doses of PCM over 3 days). I find sponging her body / showering her very effective in bringing the fever down. Her fever normally spikes up during mid night till the wee hours of the morning. For 2 nights, I had to drag her up from bed to force some water down her throat, which she of course protested and screamed murder.

Baby survived on only biscuits, E.Excel’s Nutrifresh, a little bread and some soy bean milk for 2 days. She had no appetite for other food, even soup, which is her favorite.

Oh yes, she also got her calcium and calories from ice-creams! Since she didn’t like the taste of water, I gave her ice cubes instead, which she absolutely loved!

My sick little kitty with a wet towel on her head and ice pack to cool her body.  When Baby had high fever for days after her surgeries last year,  the nurses used ice pack to bring the temperature down.

Another Eye Chalazion

Baby has another eye chalazion after an eye chalazion surgery about 2 months ago. Lightning does strike on the same place twice!! This time it’s on her left upper eyelid. 2 months ago, she had it on her right lower eyelid. A chalazion is a lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland. Some kids are just very prone to getting chalazion. Our ophthalmologist was one kid who had 4 chalazion surgeries from age 3 through 10!

This time, I didn’t want to take any chances. At the first symptom of a slight swell on the eyelid, we brought her to see the ophthalmologist at ISEC, who confirmed that one of the oil glands is blocked. He told us that there is very good chance that the swelling will resolve after some Vigamox eye drops.

This Baby of mine is really problematic. Her health issues never seem to come to an end, sigh….
