Restless Because Of Constipation

Despite taking psyllium husk and Duphalac (laxative) everyday, Baby still has constipation, though not as bad as without these laxatives. Yesterday, she did not move her bowels. Each time she does not move her bowels for a day, she will be restless the entire night. She will toss and turn and wake up really early the next morning. This morning she got up at 5:30am. I knew her tummy felt uncomfortable because of the unmoved bowels. If she still can’t move her bowels today, I will resort to enema. Well, it’s between the devil and the deep blue sea. If she doesn’t poo poo, she runs a risk of getting UTI again. I pray that she will poo poo today! Dear Lord, please help Cassandra to have an explosive poo poo today, amen!

Psyllium Husk To Relief Baby’s Constipation

I have been feeding psyllium husk to Baby for over 2 weeks to relief her constipation and it’s working.  She can now move her bowels almost everyday and her stools are no longer rock hard.  I am going to continue feeding her with psyllium husk and only plan to stop feeding her with it when she learns to eat fruits.  This child of mine does not like fruits and it’s a torture to get her to swallow fruits.  She will chew any fruit given to her but will spit everything out minutes later.  She is also starting to reject green leafy veggie.  She once loved green leafy veggie but now she will single out all the green stuff in her bowl of food.  The only veggie she loves now is cherry tomatoes, though they may sometimes taste sour.  She can easily chomp down 10 small cherry tomatoes in a sitting.

Beating The Constipation

Baby’s paed and surgeon had warned us many times that one of the causes of UTI is constipation. Constipation will put pressure on the bladder and the unmoved wastes in the guts contain bacteria. Thus it’s very important that she moves her bowels everyday. Unfortunately, Baby has been suffering from constipation for the past few months. I suspect that this is one of the causes of the bacteria in her urine lately. I would not say that she had a UTI coz she has no fever, no vomiting and is well. Only her urine looked cloudy and smelled foul.

Last week when we brought Baby to the paed, he prescribed her with these stuff to help regulate Baby’s bowel movement:

Restore probiotics (which is freaking costly!), Lactulose syrup, Novalac formula for constipated toddlers and enema.  So far, I have not used this enema on Baby.  I have been feeding Baby with psyllium husk twice a day (1/2 teaspoon each time) and thank God, her bowel movement is quite regular now. I may continue Baby on Novalac (skimmed cow’s milk) since she is accepting it quite well.

Psyllium Husk To Relief Baby’s Constipation

I have been feeding Baby with pure psyllium husk for about 2 weeks now to provide relief for her constipation problem. Each day, I will sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of psyllium husk into her soup, twice a day. Though she still cannot move her bowels every single day, at least her poop is not rock hard anymore. I will continue to feed her psyllium husk, pump in lots of fluids into her body plus get her to eat a serving of fruit everyday. Getting her to swallow fruits is quite a challenge as she is not a fruit lover.

Psyllium Husk To Relieve Baby C’s Constipation

Baby has been facing constipation for the past 2 weeks.  In the past, she hardly had constipation, well perhaps once in a blue moon.  Lately the constipation is quite bad.  She would only poo poo once in every 2 days. Baby’s surgeon had warned us before that constipation will trigger a urinary tract infection (UTI).

I’ve tried all sorts of bowel movement inducing food and drinks on Baby lately from prune juice to lime juice (with honey), papaya, yoghurt, a few teaspoons of green tea diluted with water and red dragon fruits but nothing really worked effectively.  Then I remembered psyllium husk, something that I eat every morning without fail.   I down the psyllium husk with a glass of water, apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of honey every morning.  It is really effective in moving the bowels and I hardly ever have constipation.

For the past several days, I have been adding 1/2 a teaspoon of psyllium husk into Baby’s food. By right psyllium husk should be taken on an empty stomach but I am 100% sure Baby would reject the psyllium husk if I mix it with water or milk and feed her on an empty stomach. Psyllium husk tastes awful and even I have a hard time gulping it down my throat.

The psyllium husk has been pretty effective on Baby. Together with drinking lots of fluids, eating fruits and making Baby exercise (I try to bring her down for a walk everyday), Baby can now poo poo without the need of enema. I used enema on her about 2 weeks ago when she could not poo poo for 2.5 days. Baby’s poop is still hard and I think I will increase the amount of psyllium husk to twice a day, until she poops easily everyday and poops nice, soft stools!

This is NOT intended to be a medical advice. Please consult your doctor if you or your children are suffering from constipation. The above article was written based on my own experience with my child.

Drink Lime Juice To Beat Constipation

The ample of acids present in lime helps clear the excretory system by washing and cleaning off the tracts, just like some acids are used to clean floor and toilets. Then the roughage in it is also helpful in easing constipation. But it is mainly due to high acids. An overdose of lime juice with salt also acts as an excellent purgative without any side effects, thereby giving relief in constipation.

So the next time you suffer from constipation, try juicing several limes into a glass of warm water. It may help move the sludge out from your body.

Sure Way To Combat Constipation

Whenever my gals have constipation, the first thing that comes into my mind to help them move their bowel is the red dragon fruit. I always have stock of the red dragon fruit in my fridge and my gals and I eat this fruit at least 2-3 times a week.  But not Baby coz she seems to have loose bowel quite often, no thanks to the prophylactics antibiotics that she’s been eating daily since she was 7 weeks old. In fact, I hardly feed Baby with fruits coz she poo poos just too much. Baby takes Nutrifresh from E.Excel instead, a nutrition powder which consists of fruits, berries and veggie.

Baby could not poo poo for 2 days early this week. She hardly ever has constipation. On the 2nd and 3rd day, I gave her some red dragon fruits and as effective as it has always been, on the 3rd day, she finally poo pooed, though not as explosive as I’d expected!

Beating Constipation With Psyllium Husk And Prune Juice

That’s Sherilyn downing a cup of prune juice with a spoonful of psyllium husk.  I thought she wouldn’t drink that cup of yucky stuff coz it’s quite yucky tasting and the texture? Eeeeyucks…. even I hate it but I still down a cup of apple cider vinegar (about 2 teaspoons) with water and psyllium husk every morning…. and I hardly ever have constipation.

The yucky cup of prune juice with psyllium husk. If it’s gulped down immediately, it’s not that geli (repulsive) but if you let that cup of stuff sit for more than 15 mins, oh boy, the husks will expand and the feeling of them going down your throat is just horrid!! Sher did not drink her cup of yucky immediately yesterday and when she drank it half an hour later, she almost wanted to puke. But I told her – drink that or drink your meds and put enema. She downed the cup of yucky painfully, hahaha!

No Longer Bloated

The Duphalac syrup is taking effect and Sherilyn has been pooping lots for the past few days. Her appetite has also returned and she’s no longer rejecting milk, albeit she’s still holding on to her cup of milk in the morning and needs at least half an hour to gulp it down after much nagging and threats from me. Lately my gals prefer fresh milk to formula milk powder meant for kids their age…. coz fresh milk tastes better. I prefer fresh milk too.  I am really contemplating switching them completely to fresh milk. It’s going to be way easier to get them to drink fresh milk and I don’t have to burst my blood vessel coaxing #2 to drink her formula milk. And it’s going to save me the trouble of fixing them milk since I can just pour the fresh milk out from the box right from the fridge. But aren’t kids supposed to drink formula milk enriched with all the vitamins, minerals, DHA, AA, SA and all that jazz?

Anyway, back to Sherilyn. Today we brought her to an Italian restaurant for lunch and she could chomp down slices after slices of bread with huge chunks of butter. She also whacked a plate of spaghetti and helped herself to more thereafter. Also ate half a cup of pistachio ice-cream for dessert. After lunch, she said she wanted to poo! After her poopie business, she said she was hungry again, goodness!  So when we reached home, I gave her a cup of fresh milk, which she still needed at least half an hour to finish with nagging and threats from me and daddy… coz she just likes to dilly dally and play till no end before she eats and drinks.  That’s just Sherilyn.  Tonight, I’ll fix her some chilled buckwheat noodles with some cold Japanese greentea noodles sauce.  When she heard I was going to prepare noodles for her, she was the first to say “yay…..yummy noodles“!  I think I will have no problem getting her to  finish her bowl of noodles. As long as she does not have to eat rice with dishes, she will be one very happy girl and so will I!

A Very Bloated Sherilyn

Since infant, Sherilyn has been a very constipated child.  When she was a newborn,  she would only poo poo once in 8-10 days, which got me worried sick.  But when she finally poo pooed, it was explosive and she normally spent a good 15-30 minutes pooping lots.  All these years up until now, Sherilyn needs to drink lots of water, prune juice, eat papaya and dragon fruit to assist her with an easy bowel movement.   Every now and then, she even needed enema to induce her to move her bowels.

Lately, Sherilyn’s appetite has been really bad.  She used to love drinking milk but for the past 1 month, she avoided milk and when she drank her milk, she would take forever to finish a cup of 6 ounces milk. This fler just doesn’t seem to get hungry at all lately. When she didn’t want to eat her dinner one night, we punished her and didn’t give her any milk before she went to bed. I thought she would be famished the next morning but I was wrong. The next morning, she sat at the dining table daydreaming, with the cup of milk untouched for almost an hour (and she was already late for school) until I flashed the cane at her. When it comes to meal times, she would need 2-3 hours every day to painfully swallow her food. I suspected that something wasn’t quite right with her.

Lately, she has also been complaining of having tummy aches.  Last week, the hubs and I were shocked when we saw blood in the toilet bowl during one of her poopie sessions.  There was quite an amount of blood and when asked if she felt pain at her bottom or in her tummy, she said no. This got the hubs and I to be concerned. A few days later, we brought her to see the paed. Our paed touched her tummy and commented that it was bloated and hard. You see, Sherilyn has a habit of holding back her poop… even when she keeps farting, she would resist going to the toilet. This happens when she’s either too lazy to sit at the throne or when she’s overly engrossed playing or watching TV. According to our paed, the poop have accummulated in her intestines, thus the bloatedness, tummy ache, frequent flatulance and the lack of appetite.

She was given Duphalac syrup (Lactul Solution) by our paed. She has to drink the solution thrice a day, until she gets a diarrhea, after which the solution can be reduced to once a day. Once she has a regular pattern of bowel movement, the medication can be stopped. Frankly, I am not really keen in feeding her with laxatives. I may try feeding her with psyllium husk (natural fibre) one of these days because this has helped me tremendously in my bowel movement.
