Cantaloupe Health Benefits

The El Nino heatwave is at its height now. The weather is sizzling hot and dry every single day, with temperatures ranging from 37 – 40 degrees Celsius.

Cooling fruits such as cantaloupe, pineapple and pear tend to be my choice of fruits these days, along with my favorite orange and apple.   Snacking on cool and juicy fruits on such hot days is really refreshing and sure douses the ‘heatiness’ in our body.

Here’s one of the smoothies that I made last week-

Cantaloupe + red apple + orange + chia seeds + fresh coconut water smoothie.

While the girls had cantaloupe smoothie, I tossed in a few slices of beet root into my Blendtec blender.

Cantaloupes are also commonly known as muskmelons, mush melons, rock melons and Persian melons.

Cantaloupes have a very pleasant aroma and are delicious. Cantaloupe contains an abundance of antioxidants including choline, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, all of which provide protection against a range of diseases and conditions from the common cold to cancer.

Health Benefits of Cantaloupe

1) Age-related macular degeneration
The antioxidant zeaxanthin, found in cantaloupe, filters out harmful blue light rays and is thought to play a protective role in eye health and possibly ward off damage from macular degeneration.

2) Asthma
The risks for developing asthma are lower in people who consume a high amount of certain nutrients. One of these nutrients is beta-carotene, found in yellow and orange fruits like cantaloupe, pumpkin, carrots and leafy greens like spinach and kale. Vitamin C is another important nutrient that may protect against asthma and is found in abundance in cantaloupe,2 as well as citrus and tropical fruits.

3) Healthy Skin
Cantaloupes are chock-full of beta-carotene, which is the precursor to vitamin-A. The best part about dietary beta-carotene, instead of supplements, is that there is no chance for overdose or vitamin-A toxicity, because the body only converts as much as it needs; the rest remains as beta-carotene to fight diseases as antioxidants. But the amount that turns into vitamin-A enters the skin and stimulates the membrane of skin cells and increasing regrowth and repair. This protects that membrane into the body against harmful toxins that prematurely age the skin. Vitamin-A cream is also used as a salve for irritation and redness on the skin, due to its naturally soothing qualities.

4) Diabetes
Although human testing is not as widespread as it should be, early studies show cantaloupe to be connected with improved insulin metabolism, which means a more stable fluctuation of blood sugar, preventing the dangerous spikes and plunges of blood sugar all that diabetics fear. It has also been shown to reduce oxidative stress on the kidneys, which can prevent a number of kidney-related diseases.

5) Digestion
Cantaloupes are high in both fiber and moisture, thus helps to prevent constipation, promote regularity and maintain a healthy digestive tract.

6) Hydration
With its high water and electrolyte content, cantaloupe is a great snack to have on hand on hot days.

Potential health risks of consuming cantaloupe
It is the total diet or overall eating pattern that is most important in disease prevention and achieving good health. It is advisable to follow a diet with a variety than to concentrate on individual foods as the key to good health.

Be sure to wash and scrub the outside surface of a cantaloupe thoroughly before cutting to decrease the risk of harmful bacteria like Salmonella transferring to the flesh of the melon.

Beta-blockers, a type of medication most commonly prescribed for heart disease, can cause potassium levels to increase in the blood. High potassium foods such as cantaloupe should be consumed in moderation when taking beta-blockers.

Consuming too much potassium can be harmful to those whose kidneys are not fully functional.

Healthy Smoothie For Breakfast

While everyone was still dreaming in bed early this Sunday morning, I got up early to do some chores as usual, and then whipped up smoothie for everyone!

Orange + apple + fresh coconut water smoothie for the girls and hubs.  Avocado + milk + orange apple coconut shake for moi!

There were a total of 3 bottles +  1 glass of fruit smoothie and a glass of avocado milk shake.  This would have cost at least RM60 if we were to buy them from juice and smoothie bars outside.  But my cost is not even RM20!  Can you see how much profit these juice and smoothie bars reap??  This always gets me thinking that I should  open my own health food and juice bar too some day!

Blueberry Smoothie

With two big punnets of blueberry that I lugged back from New Zealand, I made blueberry smoothie (blitzed with other fruits) for everyone everyday for over a week!

Here, I made orange + apple + blueberry smoothie.  I had to add a teaspoon of boysenberry honey, to be blitzed with the fruits as the blueberries were a tad sour.  I bought the boysenberry honey from Honey Centre in New Zealand.

The above Blendtec jug could yield 5 glasses of smoothie.  That is why I so love my Blendtec as I can dump in all the fruits that I want into the jug, blitz the fruits for less than a minute and everyone in the family gets to gulp down their fruits at the touch of a button!  So easy!

I froze the apples and blueberries for about 2 hours in the freezer for the icy kick that the girls love!

Healthy Fruit Smoothie + Baked Sandwich For Lunch

It’s been a while since I last whirled out some refreshing and healthy fruit smoothies for my girls.  Since there were quite a bit of fruits in the fridge, I swirled up some refreshing fruit smoothies for the girls for their lunch last week.

On the left is orange, apple, passion fruit and chia seed smoothie for Alycia.

On the right is the same concoction with the addition of strawberry flavored yoghurt milk for Cass. Funnily, yoghurt milk seems to have a pretty good effect in moving Cass’ bowels.  She’s a very constipated child and I’m glad that I have found a pretty cheap and yummy ‘laxative’ for her, which she can drink 2-3 times a day.

That’s the girls’ appetizer for lunch.

Next, the main course is baked crispy sandwich with egg mayo + sweet corn kernels.  The sandwich was baked for 15 minutes in the oven.  I found out by chance that by using a fork to press on the 4 edges of the sandwich, the sides will be sealed, thus preventing the filling from spilling out.

But Cass prefers to open up the sandwich to eat the bread separately as her bottom tooth is now shaky and it hurts her to bite on hard food.

Avocado Smoothie and Avocado Health Benefits

One of the fruits that is almost always available at our home is avocado. The mil loves avos. So do I. And we are training the girls to love avos too.  They are starting to like avo spread on their bread, avo salad, avo sushi and avo smoothie.

Here’s the avocado-milk smoothie that I made and it is really creamy, buttery, soothing, delish and filling. It can even be taken as a replacement meal, thus can help to promote weight loss.  My girls commented that it was too creamy but I liked it and will definitely make this smoothie again for lunch!

Ingredients:

1 ripe avocado
3 tablespoons of cold fresh milk
Half cup of water
Ice cubes to be blended (optional)
Put everything into my Shimono food processor and swirl it for less than a minute.
Add ice cube (optional) and serve!

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Avocados are also considered as one of the healthiest foods in the planet because they contain in excess of 25 essential nutrients, including vitamin A, B, C, E, & K, copper, iron, phosporus, magnesium, and potassium. Avocados also contain fiber, protein, and several beneficial phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol, glutathione and lutein, which may protect against various disease and illness.

(1) Healthy brain: can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s.

Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages.

(2) Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL.

Avocados’ vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is a harbinger of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters.

(3) Pregnancy: Folic acid is commonly recommended for pregnant women to help the fetus develop its brain and other vital organs. But some health experts consider synthetically extracted folic acid a problem. They recommend using natural folate for its folic acid content instead.

Folate also reduces stroke risk, according to a study of people who eat folate rich foods.

(4) Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

(5) Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more than banana, with omega-3 and oleic acid are beneficial toward reducing blood pressure.

(6) Blood sugar: Avocado’s monounsaturated fats can prevent or reverse insulin resistance, a source of type 2 diabetes. The high soluble fiber of avocado helps prevent blood sugar spikes.

(7) Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is considered the basis of most non-contagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents.

(8) Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione.

(9) Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients.

(10) Cancer: Avocados can help protect against prostate and breast cancers.

(11) Avocados contain glutathione, a powerful antioxidants that helps fight free radicals in the body.

(12) Cure bad breath : Avocados are one of the best natural mouth wash and bad breath remedies. It is cleanses intestine which is the real cause of coated tongue and bad breath.

(13) Skin Care : The avocado oil is added in many cosmetics because of its ability to nourish the skin and make your skin glow. It also aids in treating psoriasis, a skin disease that causes skin redness and irritation
