Anxiety Causes Wind / Gas

The past 1 week has been a week filled with stress and anxiety.

Cass was hospitalized for UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) but was on home leave. Hubby had to drive us to the hospital for her antibiotic jabs three times a day at 9am, 4pm and 11pm. It was a week filled with whirlwind events, anxiety, worries, lots of mad rush, lack of sleep and stress. Because of the urgency of her admission, the timing of her jabs and the tests ordered by the doctor, I had skipped meals and meals off my regular hours.

And the result?

BAD.   A big bloated gassy stomach. And I have been in pain caused by the trapped wind in the stomach.  Double whammy!

It’s true that when it rains, it pours real heavily!  It always appears that when the dark cloud is hovering above you, it would stay on and rain on you till you drown.  I am anxiously awaiting the rainbow and light at the end of the tunnel now.

When you know you have anxiety, there are many symptoms you expect. You expect to feel very tense. You expect to have a lot of nervous thoughts and actions. You expect a rapid heartbeat, nausea, and shaking. But you may not expect that anxiety can cause gas problems. Not only can anxiety lead to gas problems/bloating – the gas problems themselves can actually lead to symptoms that cause further anxiety.  While being gassy is generally nothing to worry about, recognizing the cause of your gas problems is important for ensuring you’re not overwhelmed by your anxiety symptoms.

It is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of your gas without tests, but it is very likely to be caused by any or all of the following:

  • Air Swallowing – During anxiety attacks, it’s not uncommon to start swallowing too much air. You’re not necessarily doing this intentionally – you may simply be swallowing saliva and swallow air as a result, or you may simply be breathing too quickly and some air is going down the wrong tube – but once the air is inside your body, it starts to cause pressure and needs to be released.
  • Oxygen Release – Similarly, those with anxiety and panic attacks are more likely to suffer from hyperventilation. Hyperventilation is when there is too much oxygen in your blood. Eventually that oxygen needs to be dispelled, and gas may be the result.
  • Digestion Issues- Anxiety causes stress on your gastrointestinal system. That stress may cause you to stop processing food efficiently, often processing it too quickly or too slowly. That can cause the bacteria in your body to produce excess gas, which leads to bloating. Irritable bowel syndrome may also be caused by or aggravated by anxiety, and this too can lead to similar gas issues.

No only is the wind trapped in my stomach, it is also trapped in my breasts!! It is agony and the pain is very sharp at times and feels as if a knife is stabbing my breast from the inside!

Natural Remedies to Expel Gas/Wind:

1) Drink some peppermint tea

2) Let them loose. If you have the urge to release the wind, do not resist it. Just find a place in private and do yourself a favor.

3) Ginger is tummy tamer.  Make yourself a cup of ginger tea.

4) Drink chamomile tea.

5)  Eat pumpkin. Eat approximately 1 cup of pumpkin with your meal to ward off gas. You can have it baked, steamed, or broiled, or whip up a recipe all your own.

6) Chew food thoroughly.

7) Drink warm lemon water.

8) Massage tummy.  Whenever my kids and I have gas in my stomach, I use my most trusted Melaleuca oil to massage our tummies. It works most of the time instantly.  The sound of the gas being released like a deflated balloon is music to my ears and big relief in my tummy.

9) Avoid gas-causing foods.

10) I find that exercising (light jogging and swimming) helps. You can try yoga too.

There are many other natural remedies for relieving gas. You can google search for one that best fits you.

Should Fruits Be Eaten On An Empty Stomach?

I have been eating my fruits on an empty stomach in the morning for almost 20 years. My ex-colleague was the one who introduced this health regime to me. Sure enough, after following this fruit-eating on empty stomach routine for weeks, I felt the difference in my health. And so I have been religiously doing this since 1996, everyday of my life, even when I had to travel overseas or was stuck in the hospital with Cass.

But now health experts are saying that eating fruits on empty stomach is a myth. These experts are saying that fruits can be eaten at any time and it can be eaten along with other foods.  The body produces digestive enzymes for protein, fat, and carbohydrates which help it to digest mixed meals. Besides, since the stomach has a high concentration of hydrochloric acid, bacteria is killed before it is able to reproduce, so fermentation cannot take place in the stomach.  If we could not digest mixed meals, we would not even be able to digest most foods since most foods are a combination of nutrients. For example, even vegetables like green beans and broccoli are a mix of carbohydrate and protein.

Whatever claim there is on eating fruits, I still prefer to eat my fruits on an empty stomach.  My kids do that too and we have been practising this for many years.   What food is good for you and what food is bad for you keeps changing. Decades ago, coconut oil was the bane to our health. Now, coconut oil is touted as a super food!  Similarly, years ago, we were advised to choose margarine over butter. Now, it is the other way round!

If you have an elderly Chinese relative  living with you, I’ll bet she / he will digress and say that fruits is too ‘leong’ or cooling for the body and should be eaten after food.

My take is – do whatever makes your body feel good. You can try both methods and compare the effects and then stick to one that you are comfortable with.

Oat Bran Causes Gas And Constipation

It’s been more than a week since I started adding oat bran into my diet to reap its many health virtues.  But each time after I had taken oat bran, my tummy would feel really bloated with flatulence  and constipation would follow the next day!

Initially, I wasn’t really sure that oat bran was the culprit. I thought I had eaten something that caused gas. And I blamed it on the hormones too!   However, after several times, I finally saw the trend and identified the culprit!  That after a meal of oat bran with milk, my stomach would start to balloon up with discomfort. The next day, I would be sitting and waiting on the throne!

Today, I stopped taking oat bran and my stomach feels fine and dandy.  Then I googled ‘oat bran and gas’, ‘oat bran and constipation’ and I was spot on. Indeed oat bran is the culprit to all my stomach discomfort!

Here’s a very interesting article on ‘Healthy eating can make tummy trouble WORSE: Why a high-fibre diet isn’t always the answer for gut problems‘ from the dailymail.co.uk

BRAN

Doctors often advise adding a handful of bran to cereals to help with constipation (defined as going to the loo less than three times a week).

This is because bran is insoluble fibre, meaning it fills the stomach up and stimulates the bowel.

But bran can actually exacerbate some forms of constipation.

‘For constipation, there’s a belief that eating fibre such as bran always helps,’ says Dr Emmanuel.

‘But with slow transit constipation (STC) — a nerve and muscle problem that causes the slow passage of waste through the large intestine — it can cause bloating and excessive gas.

And for five million of the 12??million people suffering IBS in this country, fibre is one of the worst things, says Peter Whorwell, professor of medicine and gastroenterology at University Hospital of South Manchester.

Adding a bulking agent in the form of fibre such as bran gives the bowel even more work to do,’ he says.

‘A significant number of IBS patients might be hyper-reactive to agents that stimulate or irritate the gut, particularly when it comes to bran.

‘It’s wrong to say that eating fibre is healthy when it exacerbates unpleasant symptoms for so many people with IBS.’

Once he has assessed that this is the problem, Professor Whorwell advises his patients to switch to white bread, white pasta, biscuits and cream crackers — anything made from refined white flour, as these don’t contain as much rough fibre.

A Healthy Diet Prevents Nutritional Deficiencies

Important nutrients are normally absorbed by your body through healthy foods and vitamins, but there are many people who don’t eat nutritious foods, or even regular meals. If you’re daily diet is lacking in essential nutrients, natural health supplements can help your body replace what it needs.

A poor diet without adequate amounts of protein, carbohydrates and fats can cause nutritional deficiencies. Over time, these deficiencies can result in a variety of health problems that affect your bones, heart, digestion, skin and mental health. Because your body stores nutrients to use them as needed, nutritional deficiencies can go undetected for a long period of time. If you’re not eating a well-balanced diet, it’s important to know the warning signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies.

What are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of nutritional deficiencies can vary based on the specific nutrients that are lacking in your diet. Since general symptoms mimic the symptoms of many illnesses, it may be necessary to visit your doctor for a blood test that includes a complete blood count. This is the only way a nutritional deficiency can be diagnosed. Here are some of the symptoms to watch out for:

* Weakness
* Fatigue
* Dizziness
* Sleepiness or insomnia
* Constipation
* Irregular heart rhythms
* Poor concentration
* Memory loss
* Depression
* Hair thinning or loss
* Palor or pale skin

Most health problems caused by nutritional deficiencies can be reversed with proper eating habits, a healthy diet and supplements, but severe or long-term deficiencies may contribute to permanent health problems.

Common Nutritional Deficiencies

Iron – Iron deficiency can cause anemia, since iron helps to produce healthy red blood cells. Red meat, egg yolks and dark green, leafy vegetables are all high in iron.

Vitamin A – Vitamin A is important to good eye health. Vitamin A deficiencies and eye problems can be prevented with a diet that includes green and yellow fruits and vegetables and daily vitamin supplements.

Vitamins B1 and B3 – Vitamin B1 (thiamine) builds healthy nerves and muscles. A deficiency can lead to heart problems. Vitamin B3 (niacin) is important for healthy skin and good digestion. A deficiency can lead to pellagra and gastrointestinal problems. Green vegetables, fish and whole grains are high in B vitamins.

Calcium – Calcium is essential for strong bones, teeth, muscles and nerves. Calcium deficiencies can lead to osteoporosis, tooth loss and heart problems. Green leafy vegetables, calcium-fortified grains and dairy products are excellent sources of calcium.

3 Ways to Make Your Medical Office More Inviting

Most people dread visiting the doctor because most of it is out of our norm. Having someone exam your body can be uncomfortable and even embarrassing. Ensuring that patients feel at ease in your office is important in sealing their next appointment with you. Doing so can be easier than you thought.

Pleasant Atmosphere
Temperature is key here. Whether in the exam room or the waiting room, it is often colder than most prefer. Many exams require the removal of clothing which makes the visitor feel even less comfortable. Adding paintings, a television or other noticeable decor makes the person feel more at ease and relaxed during their wait and visit. Improving all aspects will leave the person feeling happier with their experience.

Friendly Service
Put frankly, people expect to be treated with respect and friendly intentions. Ensuring that you and your staff are trained to do so will leave patients with the highest impressions and promote their return.

Adequate Equipment
Plenty of people are already nervous with the idea of their appointment so making sure that everything in the office is up to date and of great quality will ease the patient slightly. Learn more about the newest options for your equipment for better reactions and results.

Many doctor visits are unavoidable so making the most of them for your clients will leave them feeling appreciated and willing to revisit. They might also spread good reviews of their pleasant experience.

Dangerous Chemicals In Toiletries and Make-Up

My face is often devoid of make-up. I don’t even have foundation and face powder in my vanity pouch.  Thank God for my parents’ genes, I have pretty flawless skin.  The most I’ll do is to dust some baby powder on my face and brush a stroke or two of blusher on my cheeks. Occasionally, I will draw my eyebrows and put on a little color on my lips. I dispose my lipstick after a year, even if the stick is not even 50% used.  I really hate to think of what the chemicals will do to my body when I ingest chemicals from the lipstick that I put on.

See this list here?  This applies to everyone, not just eczema sufferers. When we use these products with hidden chemical, it is indirectly entering our bloodstream and over time causes harm to our bodies. Breast cancer is just one disease you can get from over use of such products, for example.

This is how manufacturers screw consumers!

My friend chanced upon this Drug Facts labelling when her young daughter peeled it off her Lady Speed Stick.  Tell me, who would actually tear the label off to read what’s overleaf.  I’ll just chuck my empty toiletry container into the recycle bin without giving a hoot to peel off the label to read what’s overleaf.

This particular speed stick, looked pretty innocent with a sticker at the back showing its ingredients.  Check out the 4th line – it says ‘Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease’.  So what does this mean?  It is trying to warn you that the chemicals from the Speed Stick enter our bloodstream and if you are a kidney patient, the chemicals may exacerbate your condition.

That is why I never use roll-on anti-perspirant and anti-deodorant. Even with talcum powders, I read the ingredients very carefully and only use baby talcum powders made from corn and other natural ingredients.  Once I bought a bottle of talcum powder with cooling effect. I liked it a lot as it gave me a nice cooling sensation and I loved the fragrance.  Then, the health freak me read the list of ingredients carefully and I was horrified when I read that Triclosan is one of the ingredients in it. Go Google to find out what Triclosan is.   I  buy shampoos and soaps without  SLS and paraben, though they cost so much more than regular ones.  And I drink Izumio everyday.  The hydrogen from Izumio acts to flush out toxins from our body through sweat and urine, besides balancing the pH within the body.  Hydrogen is the smallest atom in the world that can penetrate your cells at a mitochondrial level and has strong anti-oxidant properties, eliminating free radicals within your body at enormous rates.

It is really quite hard for many of us to avoid using make-up, toiletries with hidden chemicals and expose ourselves to toxic chemicals. Even the Clorox (which is highly corrosive) that you use to clean your toilets and whiten your white shirts are highly toxic when mixed with ammonia.

So do yourself a favor today by giving your body a detox to rid it of toxins and free radicals.  Besides the simple fruit and veggie detox, juice cleanse, exercise and drinking detox tea, you can also drink hydrogen water.  Choose one that suits your lifestyle.  Do not wait till your body is overloaded with toxins and serious ailments start to creep out.  Start detoxing your body today! 🙂

Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

If you ask me which department I really need to start buckling down with immediate effect, it would be my ‘sleep department’.  I am chronically sleep deprived ever since my live-in helper went back to her country for good 3 years ago.  Even when our live-in helper was around, I was already not getting sufficient sleep and with her leaving, I have since been piling more onto my already full-to-the-brim plate.

Next, you would be wondering how much sleep I get everyday.  On good days, I get a maximum of 6 hours. On most days, I get 5 hours. Sometimes fewer hours.  I know this is bad.  I have already cut down on many non-necessity chores and I have no time to watch TV or to indulge in online games, unlike many of my friends who still have the luxury for these. I wonder how some full-time working mums and SAHMs can still find the time to watch TV and play online games.   My social life is pretty pathetic and meeting friends is an occasional luxury that I get.

All I can say is that being chronically sleep deprived is damaging to my health.  My tolerance and patience levels are very low, I snap at everyone quickly, especially my kids, I am grumpy, groggy, forgetful, foggy at times, emotional, have lowered stamina when I exercise every morning and I feel lethargic.  Fortunately, I was introduced to Izumio hydrogen water and Super Lutein about 1.5 months ago to help  ease my lethargy and strengthen my immune system.  These products have given me back the energy and mental acuity that I need so much everyday so that I can function.

To be a full-time SAHM (stay at home mum) is tough already. But to juggle between being a SAHM and WFHM (work from home mum), it is akin to juggling 5 balls whilst walking on a tightrope hung 10 meters above ground!  Every single day.

The average adult needs about seven to nine hours of sleep each night, according to the National Sleep Foundation, but most of us don’t even get that much. But getting too little sleep — generally understood to mean six hours or less a night, can be serious — enough to change your genes!

Of course, one night of short sleep won’t put you at serious risk, but one week can. After just seven nights of too little sleep, researchers observed more than 700 genetic changes that could play a role in consequences including heart problems and obesity, according to a recent study.  OMG, I am petrified! And I am trying my level best to let go of some things just so I can get an hour extra of sleep each day.

Today, I want to share with you the scary effects of sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation can:

1) Lead to obesity
Too little sleep can spur some less-than-ideal food choices, including serving yourself larger portions, and a hankering for junk food, thanks to some complicated hormonal changes that occur when you don’t get sufficient shuteye. It seems that six hours of sleep or less bumps up production of the hunger hormone ghrelin and limits leptin, which helps you balance your food intake, according to a 2012 review of 18 studies of sleep and appetite
2) Up Diabetes risk
A pair of small studies from 2012 examined the link between poor sleep and insulin resistance, a telltale risk factor for diabetes. One found that among healthy teenagers, the shortest sleepers had the highest insulin resistance, meaning the body is not using insulin effectively, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The second study examined fat cells, in particular, and found that cutting back on sleep increased insulin resistance in these cells, even when diet and calorie intake were restricted, Health.com reported.

3) Damage bones
At least in rats, long-term sleep deprivation seems to contribute to osteoporosis, according to a 2012 study. Researchers found changes to bone mineral density and bone marrow in the rodents when they were deprived of shuteye over a period of 72 days.

4) Increase Cancer risk
A small (but growing) body of research suggests that short and poor sleep can up risk for certain types of cancer. A 2010 study found that among 1,240 people screened for colorectal cancer, the 338 who were diagnosed were more likely to average fewer than six hours of sleep a night. Even after controlling for more traditional risk factors, polyps were more common in people who slept less, according to the study.

Getting just six hours of sleep a night has also been linked to an increase of recurrence in breast cancer patients. The study’s author has pointed to more and better sleep as a possible pathway of reducing risk and recurrence.

5) Hurt your heart
The stress and strain of too little sleep can cause the body to produce more of the chemicals and hormones that can lead to heart disease, according to 2011 research. The study found that people who slept for six hours or less each night and have problems staying asleep had a 48 percent higher risk of developing or dying from heart disease.

6) Kill sex drive
Sleep specialists say that sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame.

For men with sleep apnea, a respiratory problem that interrupts sleep, there may be another factor in the sexual slump. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2002 suggests that many men with sleep apnea also have low testosterone levels. In the study, nearly half of the men who suffered from severe sleep apnea also secreted abnormally low levels of testosterone during the night.

7) Kill you
It’s not just heart problems that can lead to sleep-deprivation-related death. In fact, short sleepers seem to die younger of any cause than people who sleep about 6.5 to 7.5 hours a night, TIME reported. A 2010 study examined the impact of short sleep on mortality and found that men who slept for less than six hours of sleep a night were four times more likely to die over a 14-year period. The study’s authors called this link “a risk that has been underestimated.”

8) Age your skin
Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic.

Sleep loss also causes the body to release too little human growth hormone. When we’re young, human growth hormone promotes growth. As we age, it helps increase muscle mass, thicken skin, and strengthen bones.

“It’s during deep sleep — what we call slow-wave sleep — that growth hormone is released,” says sleep expert Phil Gehrman, PhD. “It seems to be part of normal tissue repair — patching the wear and tear of the day.”

9) Make you forgetful
Trying to keep your memory sharp? Try getting plenty of sleep.

In 2009, American and French researchers determined that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory. The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored. Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep.

Symptoms Of A Body Detox

About a week after I started taking Izumio hydrogen water and Super Lutein, I started to have rashes on my right arm. The rashes first erupted with an itch, followed by a layer of bumpy rash on the surface of the skin. I knew that the rashes are one of the symptoms of a body detox, where the body will eliminate toxins from within.

Initially, I could not understand why the rashes appeared only on my right arm – not left arm and not anywhere else. Then it suddenly dawned on me that only my right arm was problematic! I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) on my right hand when Alycia was only 2 months old. The CTS went away  a few months later (coincidentally) when I was taking antibiotics for severe bronchitis. But the CTS has now appeared in another form – hand numbness with pins and needles. Every single morning. It is so bad that on some mornings, I could not even lift my arm up.  See how intelligent the products work. They will heal the part of the body that requires repairing.  Though I still have pins and needles on my right arm now, they are not as intense as it used to be. I am curious to know how long I need to consume the products before my hand is totally healed.

Cass displayed more extreme detox symptoms. A week after taking Izumio hydrogen water (3 packs a day), she experienced leg pain, headache, mild body aches, watery stools and sore throat.  The symptoms lasted for about 3 days. Then I began to see positive reactions in her urine leakage problem. Within a week of taking Izumio, she could be diaper-free at home – all the time during her waking hours!   Previously, she was on diapers / sanitary pads all the time.   However, she still needs to wear diapers when she is in school and when we are out. I will gradually move to the 2nd Hurdle and 3rd Hurdle set out in our Target Chart where we will have to work on getting her to hold her pee when she exerts energy to do strenuous activities and simple things like coughing and sneezing.  Cass told me just now that she wanted to try to wear just a panty when we next go out for lunch / dinner.  That’s my girl – ambitious and determined!

My right arm with bumpy patches of rashes.  They broke out yesterday.  The rashes are drying up now.

Symptoms Of A Whole Body Detox
When you begin to detoxify, the cells in your body start to eliminate toxic substances. However, before they make their final exit, the toxins are released into the bloodstream then carried through the circulatory system and this may result in other physical symptoms.  Some of these symptoms include body aches and pains, cravings or withdrawal, nausea or vomiting, clogged sinuses, constipation or diarrhea, coughing, fever, flu or cold-type symptoms, bad breath, gas, headaches and stomach aches. Toxins are often eliminated through the skin as well and this can result in acne, rashes, or other skin issues. All of these symptoms do not occur for everyone, but it is at least good to know what to expect ahead of time or what others sometimes experience during a whole body detox.

Irritability and Moodiness
A whole body detox can cause excessive irritability and moodiness. It is actually the toxins in the body that cause this problem in the first place. Detox symptoms are simply manifestations of the body’s self-cleansing and self-healing process to get rid of toxins. When you begin the detox, all the toxins get pulled out of your system so the irritability and moodiness can become much worse before they get better, though it will only be for a short period of time.

View it like cleaning a house. In the process of cleaning, everything becomes more messy and cluttered than before you started cleaning. But in order to enjoy a clean house you have to deal with the messiness in the cleaning process. Likewise, in order to help with irritability and moodiness, you have to get past the beginning phase of the whole body detox.

Fatigue
Fatigue is another common symptom of a whole body detox. This includes having a lack or even loss of energy. The severity of this symptom depends on what your lifestyle is like before the detox and how quickly you make the change into the detox.  If you more gradually start a detox and prepare your body ahead of time, you will not be as negatively affected by symptoms.

Other Physical Symptoms
When you begin to detoxify, the cells in your body start to eliminate toxic substances. However, before they make their final exit, the toxins are released into the bloodstream then carried through the circulatory system and this may result in other physical symptoms. Some of these symptoms include:
body aches and pains,
cravings or withdrawal
nausea or vomiting,
clogged sinuses,
constipation or diarrhea,
coughing,
fever,
flu or cold-type symptoms,
bad breath,
gas,
headaches
stomach aches.
Toxins are often eliminated through the skin as well and this can result in acne, rashes, or other skin issues.

All of these symptoms do not occur for everyone, but it is at least good to know what to expect ahead of time or what others sometimes experience during a whole body detox.

Washing Hands Before Meals

From the three days that I spent in school at the start of the school term recently, I noticed that Cass did not wash her hands before she ate during recess.  From my observation, 9 out of 10 kids do not wash their hands before they eat and I am appalled.  I am appalled as I get to see for myself where these kids put their hands and what they touch the moment they reach school.  Kids are made to sit on the floor at the lobby of the school – one of the dirtiest places as people walk in and out.  I also see many kids sitting on the floor just right outside the stinky toilets!  You would know how filthy, wet and stinky Malaysian public school toilets are if you have attended one yourself.  Next, the wooden desks inside the classrooms. I see dirt stains on the desks and chairs and I doubt that they are ever wiped.  The other thing is the stairs railings. Most kids sweep their hands on the railings for support  when they go up and down the stairs and I doubt that these railing are ever cleaned.  What I am totally against is that kids are made to sit on dirty floors everywhere in the school — lobby/entrance of the school, hall, classrooms and outside toilets. OMG!!  I also saw kids sitting on pee-stained toilet seats and then dashed out of the toilet without washing their hands, GAWD!  My jaw almost dropped when the OCD me saw it!    And I have not once seen any teacher reminding these kids to wash their hands before they eat.   No wonder Sherilyn had hand-foot-mouth disease once, when she just started primary 1.

Since the start of school, I have been reminding Cass to wash her hands before she eats but each time she returned from school, I found out that she had forgotten to wash her hands before and after her recess.

So this is what I did – by putting a stick-on note pad on her lunch box as reminder.  This note is always in her lunch bag.  I hope this will serve a good reminder to her. I know soon she will ignore this yellow sticker and that is when I am going to change the color or design of the stick-on note pad! 😀

Do you find out from your kids if they wash their hands before and after their meals in school?

Runner’s Knee

A few weeks ago, I had a sharp pain on my left knee cap each time I squatted down.   Sometimes there was a cracking sound and the knee felt cold and numb. The pain went on for about 10 days. The funny thing is that when I did my usual run in the morning, I did not feel the pain. The pain only came about each time I squatted down.   I was really upset and worried, fearing that I may be in a similar situation as the mil who has pain in her knees. I thought that my knee cartilage needed help or that I may have developed a mild osteoarthritis of the knee. I googled for an answer and found out that I had Runner’s Knee. So much for my love for running all my life, I have now succumbed to Runner’s Knee!

The hubs advised me to pop his Glucosamine tabs but I was reluctant. I eased the duration and intensity of my run each morning. Instead of running 5 rounds each morning, I brisk-walked 3 rounds and jogged 2 rounds at our condo jogging trek. I also spent some time doing knee exercises before I started running. On some mornings, I just did 4 rounds of brisk-walking and 1 round of running. After approximately 10 days, the pain was gone when I bent my knees! I was so relieved! Now that it is the school holidays, the timing is right for me to use the gym.  I now spend half an hour on the air-walker every morning.   Air-walking does not put so much pressure on the knees as running and jogging. I can also increase the duration of my exercise and sweat more when I work out on the air-walker.

What is Runner’s Knee
As the name suggests, runner’s knee is a common ailment among runners. But it can also strike any athlete who does activities that require a lot of knee bending — like walking, biking, and jumping. It usually causes aching pain around the kneecap.

Runner’s knee isn’t really a condition itself. It’s a loose term for several specific disorders with different causes. Runner’s knee can result from:

Overuse. Repeated bending of the knee can irritate the nerves of the kneecap. Overstretched tendons (tendons are the tissues that connect muscles to bones) may also cause the pain of runner’s knee.

Direct trauma to the knee, like a fall or blow.

Misalignment. If any of the bones are slightly out of their correct position — or misaligned — physical stress won’t be evenly distributed through your body. Certain parts of your body may bear too much weight. This can cause pain and damage to the joints. Sometimes, the kneecap itself is slightly out of position.

Problems with the feet. Runner’s knee can result from flat feet, also called fallen arches or overpronation. This is a condition in which the impact of a step causes the arches of your foot to collapse, stretching the muscles and tendons.
Weak thigh muscles.

Symptoms of runner’s knee are:
Pain behind or around the kneecap, especially where the thighbone and the kneecap meet.

Pain when you bend the knee — when walking, squatting, kneeling, running, or even sitting.

Pain that’s worse when walking downstairs or downhill.

Swelling.

Popping or grinding sensations in the knee.

What’s the Treatment for Runner’s Knee?
Regardless of the cause, the good news is that minor to moderate cases of runner’s knee should heal on their own given time. To speed the healing you can:

Rest the knee. As much as possible, try to avoid putting weight on your knee.

Ice your knee to reduce pain and swelling. Do it for 20-30 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days, or until the pain is gone.

Compress your knee. Use an elastic bandage, straps, or sleeves to give your knee extra support.

Elevate your knee on a pillow when you’re sitting or lying down.

Take anti-inflammatory painkillers. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like Advil, Aleve, or Motrin, will help with pain and swelling. However, these drugs can have side effects, like an increased risk of bleeding and ulcers. They should be used only occasionally, unless your doctor specifically says otherwise.

Practice stretching and strengthening exercises if your doctor recommends them.

Get arch supports for your shoes. These orthotics — which can be custom-made or bought off the shelf — may help with flat feet.
