Tried And Tested Fast Home Remedies For Boils

Some people are just prone to boils and I am one of them. I find that clean eating helps tremendously in preventing boils. But it isn’t always possible to eat 100% clean or even 99%, especially during festive seasons.  I have been indulging in quite a bit of unhealthy snacks during the recent Chinese New Year festival ~ butter and sugar laden cookies, fried snacks, jerkies, chocolates and the other culprit – lack of sleep. All these contributed to a huge and painful boil on my chin, OUCH!  Thankfully I managed to tame the boil in under a week with my tried and tested home remedies.

A boil is a skin infection that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. At first, the skin turns red in the area of the infection, and a tender lump develops. After four to seven days, the lump starts turning white as pus collects under the skin.

Boils are usually pea-sized, but can grow as large as a golf ball. Symptoms can include:
1. Swelling, redness, and pain
2. A white or yellow center or tip
3. Weeping, oozing, or crusting

Causes of Boils
Most boils are caused by a germ (staphylococcal bacteria). This germ enters the body through tiny nicks or cuts in the skin or can travel down the hair to the follicle.

These health problems make people more susceptible to skin infections:

  • Diabetes
  • Problems with the immune system
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor hygiene
  • Exposure to harsh chemicals that irritate the skin

Symptoms of boils

The most common places for boils to appear are on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks. When one forms on the eyelid, it is called a sty.  If several boils appear in a group, this is a more serious type of infection called a carbuncle.

My tried and tested fast home remedies:

White Toothpaste
Your everyday white toothpaste is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is a well known home remedy for burns and allergies. I started using toothpaste for pimples and boils during my first pregnancy when I avoided commercial pimple creams known to contain harsh chemicals.  It works very well for me and my youngest daughter who is also quite prone to having boils. Simply, apply white toothpaste on boil area and leave it for 30 minutes.  Apply several times a day and by the second day, you’ll notice that the boil has shriveled and less painful.

Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon oil is a good remedy for restoring the luster of dull skin. It is an astringent and detoxifying in nature and rejuvenates sagging or tired-looking skin. Its antiseptic properties help in treating pimples, boils and various other skin disorders. Lemon is also recommended for reducing excessive oil on the skin. Just apply a drop of lemon essential oil neat on the boil 2-3 times a day.

Tea Tree Oil / Melaleuca Oil
Drop several drops of tea tree oil onto the boil, and gently rub the oil on the boil area with your fingers. Be sure to cover the entire head of the boil as well as a bit of the skin around the boil. Tea tree oil can be applied full strength. Wash your hands after touching the boil. Repeat this three times a day.

Hot Compress
Apply warm compresses and soak the boil in warm/hot water. Soak some cotton balls with warm/hot water and apply on the boils. This will decrease the pain gradually and help draw the pus to the surface. Once the boil comes to a head, it will burst with repeated soakings. This usually occurs within a few days of its appearance.
When the boil starts draining, wash it with clean water until all the pus is gone and clean with an antiseptic solution. I normally apply tea tree oil.  Continue to wash the infected area two to three times a day and to use warm compresses until the wound heals.

Preventing Boils

Follow these guidelines to prevent boils:

  • Practice good personal hygiene.
  • Stay as healthy as possible ~ eat clean and right, exercise and get enough sleep
  • Drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body.

Chia Seeds Health Benefits

Recently I had an ‘accidental discovery’.  I discovered that chia seeds help to move my bowels really well! I am so glad that I chanced upon this discovery when I added a teaspoon heap of chia seeds into my morning hot chocolate drink. For someone who needs laxative occasionally, I am so happy that I can now evacuate all the gunk and junk from my bowels at least twice a day. BLISS!!

My morning milk coffee with chia seeds:

Sometimes, I would drizzle a little extra virgin coconut oil into my beverage.

I also throw in 1 to 2 teaspoon full of chia seeds into my kids’ daily fruit smoothie and have it blitzed for about 20 seconds.   This would come in really handy for my youngest daughter, who is also prone to constipation.

If you are constantly suffering from constipation, you may like to try adding 1-2 teaspoon of chia seeds into your diet everyday.

Food For Thought

Nutritional breakdown of chia seeds
According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one ounce of chia seeds (approximately 28 grams) contains 138 calories, 8 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrate, 10 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein.

Eating one ounce of chia seeds per day would provide 18% of daily calcium needs, 27% of phosphorus, 30% of manganese and smaller amounts of potassium, zinc and copper.

When compared to flaxseed, chia seeds provide more omega-3s, calcium, phosphorus and fiber – all essential nutrients that most people are not getting enough of.

The Word Chia Spelled With Chia Seeds

 Health Benefits Of Chia Seeds

1.  Chia Seeds Are Loaded With Antioxidants

Another area where chia seeds shine is in their high amount of antioxidants.  These antioxidants protect the sensitive fats in the seeds from going rancid.  Antioxidants fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells and contribute to ageing and diseases like cancer.

2. Almost All The Carbs in Them Are Fiber
Looking at the nutrition profile of chia seeds, you see that an ounce has 12 grams of carbohydrate.   However, 11 of those grams are fiber, which isn’t digested by the body.  Fiber doesn’t raise blood sugar, doesn’t require insulin to be disposed of and therefore shouldn’t count as a carb.  The true carb content is only 1 gram per ounce, which is very low. This makes chia a low-carb friendly food.  Because of all the fiber, chia seeds can absorb up to 10-12 times their weight in water, becoming gel-like and expanding in your stomach.

Theoretically, this should increase fullness, slow absorption of your food and help you automatically eat fewer calories.  Fiber also feeds the friendly bacteria in the intestine, which is important because keeping your gut bugs well fed is absolutely crucial for health.  Chia seeds are 40% fiber, by weight. This makes them one of the best sources of fiber in the world.

3. Chia Seeds Are High in Quality Protein

Chia seeds contain a decent amount of protein. By weight, they are about 14% protein, which is very high compared to most plants. They also contain a good balance of essential amino acids, so our bodies should be able to make use of the protein in them. Protein has all sorts of benefits for health. It is also the most weight loss friendly nutrient in the diet, by far.

A high protein intake reduces appetite and has been shown to reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and the desire for night time snacking by 50%.

Chia seeds really are an excellent protein source, especially for people who eat little or no animal products.

4. Chia Seeds Can Cause Major Improvements in Type 2 Diabetics

The most successful application of chia seeds to date was in a study on type 2 diabetic patients.
In this study, 20 diabetic patients received either 37 grams of chia seeds, or 37 grams of wheat bran, for 12 weeks. When they got the chia seeds, they saw improvements in several important health markers.
Blood pressure went down by 3-6 mm/Hg and an inflammatory marker called hs-CRP went down by 40%. A risk factor called vWF also decreased by 21%. There was also a small drop in blood sugar, but it wasn’t statistically significant.

Given that chia seeds are high in fiber, it does seem plausible that they could help reduce blood sugar spikes after meals, but this needs to be confirmed in studies.

5. Due to The High Fiber and Protein Content, Chia Seeds Should be Able to Help You Lose Weight

Many health experts believe that chia seeds can help with weight loss.  The fiber absorbs large amounts of water and expands in the stomach, which should increase fullness and slow the absorption of food.

6. Cardiovascular disease and cholesterol
Increased fiber intakes have also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. A review of 67 separate controlled trials found that even a modest 10-gram per day increase in fiber intake reduced LDL (the harmful type cholesterol) as well as total cholesterol.

Recent studies have shown that dietary fiber may even play a role in regulating the immune system and inflammation, consequently decreasing the risk of inflammation-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity.

7. Digestion and detox
A diet with adequate fiber prevents constipation and promotes regularity for a healthy digestive tract. Regular bowel movements are crucial for the daily excretion of toxins through the bile and stool.

Potential health risks of consuming chia seeds
Chia seeds can absorb up to 27 times their weight in water. This posed a problem for one man with a history of swallowing problems who, doctors say, developed an esophageal obstruction after eating a tablespoon of chia seeds dry and trying to wash them down with a glass of water.

The seeds formed a thick gel in his esophagus that he was unable to swallow down without medical treatment. Although this case was rare, make sure to mix chia seeds into another food or liquid before consuming, especially if you have a history of swallowing problems. Avoid giving chia seeds to small children.

I Am Down

Achy eyeballs, headache, feeling cold, lacking in stamina when I work out, itchy nose and feverish feeling. Whenever these symptoms are displayed, I know that fever and a bad cold or throat infections are looming over me. I had these symptoms yesterday and I tried to nip the bud before a full blown flu attacks me. I quickly popped my trusted Esberitox, sipped on lemon juice with Manuka honey a few times a day and popped 2 Panadol Actifast. I am feeling better today, albeit the headache and achy eyeballs are still there. I must have caught the flu bug from my mil. And oh yes, another obvious symptom is that lymph nodes have appeared behind my ears. Each time I have a cold or URTI (upper respiratory throat infection), these tiny lymph nodes which are painful at times would appear and remain there for a couple of weeks until I have completely recovered from my illness.

Home Remedies for Body Odor

Many of us have body odor to a certain extent. Some people have really terrible body odor while others have mild / tolerable BO. I have it too I must admit and this always happens after my work-out sessions. When sweat comes in contact with bacteria it gives out a disgusting smell.

I remember I used to have colleagues who have body odor (BO) so terrible that each time she / he came near me, I had to hold my breath! Once, a colleague with very bad BO was in a car with me and a few other colleagues. This guy almost suffocated all of us and we had to wind down the window of the car throughout the journey but did not have the guts to tell him off about his bad BO. Finally we passed the dirty job of telling this to him to the HR Manager! The same went with another female colleague of mine. The HR Manager was kind enough to buy a special talcum powder for BO for that colleague. She brought this colleague to her room to tell the unpleasant news to her, gave her some personal advice and gave the bottle of talcum powder to her.

If you are suffering from this embarrassing disorder, you may want to try the following home remedies to counter the body odor:

Use small amount of baking soda and squeeze some lemon on it. Use this mixture for underarms and also the groin area. It proves to be very useful during summer time.

Rub potatoes slices on your underarms. See to it that your underarm is clean and dry. Rub it for quiet a while and wait till its dry. Apply your regular deodorant on this to make a difference.

In a spray bottle put 3 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 1 cup water and 1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol. Shake this mixture well enough to be sprayed all over your body and clothes.

Apply milk of magnesia under your arms with the help of wet cotton, once you had your bath.

Apply peanut butter liberally under your arms every night before going to bed. This would help you greatly during summer season.  (I wouldn’t want to try this though, YUCKS!)

You can use alcohol, white vinegar or witch hazel as deodorant for your underarms.

Applying apple cider vinegar instead of deodorants helps to fight the odor battle

Chewing parsley, alfalfa along with other leafy vegetables helps to control the body odor.

Make radish juice from two dozen radishes. Mix it with 1/4 tsp glycerin and use it as a deodorant if put in spray-bottle.

Rosemary is an anti-bacterial. Put 8-10 drops of the rosemary oil in 1 ounce of water and apply it on the required areas. Similarly you can use tea tree oil in the same fashion.

Turnip juice minimizes underarm odor for 8-10 hours. Once you have grated turnip, squeeze it to get 2 tsp juice which should be applied under your arms in 1:1 ratio for each arm.

Drink 500 mg of wheat grass daily on empty stomach and wash it down with a glass of water. This helps in reducing body odor.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article. Avoid using any of these products if you are allergic to it.

Oh Boy, How I Hate Those Boils

When I was a young girl (before turning into a teenager), I used to have frequent break-outs of very painful and huge pus-filled boils.  I had boils on my buttocks, under my eyes, on my cheek and frequently had them inside, outside and on my nose!  Back then, I wasn’t a health freak yet and hated to drink water… and loved feasting on junk food and sweets.  That explained the frequent eruption of boils.  Oh well, most kids hate to drink water but love junkies, don’t they?  When I knew how to care for myself and realized the importance of eating healthily and wanted to have a clear complexion, the boils hardly attacked me but once in a while, I would still get them on my nose.  However, those boils were usually not pus-filled.

Lately, I have been getting these boils again – inside and outside my nose, aargh! But thankfully they were not pus-filled, but they hurt like hell. I can only point my finger to the germs from Baby C’s soiled diapers.  Ever since Baby C had her first UTI attack at 7 weeks, I have been sniffing her soiled diapers every single day, like 20 times a day!  Go find a calculator to calculate how many soiled diapers I’ve been sniffing for the past 14 months.  But those soiled diaper-sniffing sessions have been life-saving.  At the onset of foul-smelling pee in Baby’s diapers, I would bring her to the pediatric nephrologist and make her drink gallons of water to flush those pesky bugs out.

When I had those painful pus-filled boils with big heads decades ago, my mum would ask me to use a cotton and dip it into a cup of hot water mixed with salt water. This would induce the ‘head’ to erupt and the pus to flow out. Once the pus is evacuated out, the pain would also subside and the swelling reduced as well. But this treatment is frigging painful!

I did a google search and found these home remedies to treat boils from www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Boils.html :

Garlic and Onions have been proved to be among the most effective home remedy for boils treatment among several other remedies. Onion juice or garlic juice may be applied on boils externally to ripen them, break and evacuate the pus. Juices of both these vegetables can be mixed in equal quantities and applied on the boil for beneficial results.

Bitter Gourd is also an effective home remedy for blood filled boils. To treat boils, a cupful of fresh bitter gourd juice can be mixed with 1 teaspoon of lime juice, sipped on slowly on an empty stomach everyday for a few days.

Milk cream remedy is useful in the treatment of boils. An excellent poultice for boils cure is, to apply a mixture of a teaspoon each of milk cream and vinegar with a pinch of turmeric powder. This helps to ripen the blood boils and heal them without letting them become septic.

Betel Leaves treatment for boils is a valuable home remedy. A betel leaf is gently warmed till it softens. Coat it with a layer of castor oil. Spread the oiled leaf over the inflamed part. Replace this every few hours. After applying a few times, boil ruptures and drains out all the purulent matter.

Cumin seeds are beneficial in the treatment of boils. Cumin seeds are ground to a paste in water. This cumin seed paste is applied to boils for beneficial results.

Margosa leaves have proven effective in treating boils. They can be either used as a poultice, liniment or decoction with positive results. To make the decoction, boil 15 gm of margosa leaves in 500 ml water till it is reduced by one-third.

For boils treatment, steep parsley in boiled water till it becomes soft and juicy. When it is comfortably hot, wrap it in a clean muslin or linen cloth and apply it on the boils as a poultice.

Applying turmeric powder on boils speeds healing process. In case of fresh boils, roast a few dry roots of turmeric, dissolve the ashes in a cupful of water and then apply over the affected areas. This solution aids boils to ripen and burst.

Vitamin B Complex To Treat Mouth Ulcers

Remember my earlier post on Alycia having a painful ulcer on her lower inner lip? On the advise of my mum (who had recurrent mouth ulcers recently but was healed and now have no more attacks), I bought a bottle of Vitamin B Complex and gave her a tablet a day. After just 3 tablets, she told me that the ulcer wasn’t causing her pain anymore and the ulcer is now fading. I will continue to feed Alycia with Vitamin B Complex to keep those mouth ulcers at bay. Hubby is also obediently popping the Vitamin B Complex now as he is also very prone to mouth ulcers.

On the first day, Alycia didn’t want me to crush the tablet. She said she wanted to try swallowing it. It was her very first time swallowing a bitter tablet and she was so conscious of the tablet in her mouth that she just could not swallow the tablet and after a minute or so trying hard to swallow the tablet, she puked all her dinner out! The second day, she agreed to have the tablet crushed into powder. I then mix the crushed Vitamin B Complex with some homemade pineapple jam and she had no problem eating it.

A recent study reported that a nightly dose of 1000 mcg of vitamin-B12 helped patients with recurrent mouth ulcers in reducing ulcers and in decreasing the duration of their outbreaks.

The vitamin B complex tablets, pill crusher and pineapple jam.

We also got Alycia a tube of Bonjela gel to apply on the ulcer and made her gargle her mouth with salt water twice-thrice a day. All these helped the ulcer and pain to subside.

Feeding Infants And Children With Coconut Water

Ever since I found out that coconut water is packed with healing properties and can be used to prevent UTIs, I have started to feed Baby C with it. However, I am still doubtful if it’s save for a toddler to drink too much coconut water since the Chinese old wives would say that it is too cooling for the body. I did a google search and found this article from BabyCenter :

Tender coconut water (elaneer / nariyal pani) is one of the richest sources of electrolytes. It is high in chlorides, potassium, and magnesium and has a moderate amount of sugar, sodium and protein. Coconut water is also a good source of dietary fibre, manganese, calcium, riboflavin and Vitamin C.

Coconut water relieves exhaustion by replenishing the natural salts lost by the body. It is ideal for children to prevent dehydration when they suffer from diarrhoea. In the hot summer months, when your toddler is thirsty, coconut water is so much more preferable than the empty calories of packaged fruit juices and aerated drinks. It is naturally sterile so it is perfect for children while travelling since you don’t have to worry about contamination.

Coconut water is a natural diuretic and hence increases the flow of urine; this helps prevent urinary tract infections and cools the body. Coconut water also helps relieve constipation, improves intestinal function and promotes digestive health. It may also help infants suffering from intestinal problems.

Coconut water contains high levels of lauric acid which is what is used by the body to make monolaurin — a disease fighting fatty acid derivative. Babies make monolaurin from the lauric acid in their mother’s breast milk so coconut water is recommended for nursing mothers. Lauric acid has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which protect young children against various infections.

Coconut water is a nourishing beverage and very suitable for children of all ages.

Health Benefits Of Coconut Water

One of my all-time favorite drinks is coconut water. I love the juice, drunk directly from the coconut and my favorite is the small coconut that produces fragrant coconut water, which tastes a tad like juice of pandan leaves (screwpine leaves). This type of coconut is slightly costlier than the big regular ones.

There is a coconut stall right outside where I stay and we are regular patrons of this stall. We patronize this stall at least once or twice a week. The Chinese old wives would always tell a woman who has just conceived that she should avoid coconut water as it is very cooling to the body, thus may cause a miscarriage. I don’t know how true this taboo/fact is but I recently found out that coconut water has many health benefits and healing properties. Remember the old movie Blue Lagoon, starring Brooke Shields? In that movie, she didn’t know that she was pregnant and gave birth to a baby in an island.  She fed the baby with coconut water and the baby thrived and grew up!

These are some very interesting and amazing health benefits of coconut water, extracted from this website and this website:

* The body retains its coolness and temperature that is proper.

* The body gets orally re-hydrated and contains all the required isotonic beverages.

* It carries oxygen and nutrients to the body.

* The immune system gets boosted.

* Helps in weight loss.

* The body fluids gets replenished naturally after exercise.

* Raises the body’s metabolism.

* Fights viruses and detoxifies.

* Diabetes gets controlled.

* The digestive system gets cleansed.

* Helps the body in fighting viruses such as herpes, AIDS and flu.

* Reduces the risk of cancer.

* Urethral stones and kidney can be treated.

* Improves circulation.

* Contains less sodium.

* Good source of potassium.

* Coconut water is good for the functioning of the kidneys.

* It is useful in the case of urinary bladder problems.

* Useful for re-hydration.

* Contains less fat.

* Contains no cholesterol.

* Natural balance of magnesium and calcium as well as sodium and potassium.

* An electrolyte drink.

* Refreshes and revitalizes on a hot summery day.

* Stabilizes electrolytes.

* A useful source of fiber for diet.

* Can improve good cholesterol (HDL).

* Free from contamination. Useful while traveling.

* Beneficial for those suffering from acidity.

* Heart burn, sluggish digestion during pregnancy can be taken care of by drinking coconut water.

* Drinking coconut water for infants are effective for natural treatment of intestinal worms.

* Coconut water consumption aids in natural destruction for intestinal worms and it is safe for children to administer this herbal remedy on them.

*  Coconut water contains natural albumen, thus it is perfect natural SOS drink for cholera affected patients.

Wow, I never knew that coconut water is so therapeutic!  Since it’s also beneficial to the kidneys and can treat urinary bladder problems, I started feeding Baby C with some coconut water yesterday.   My 2 older gals love chilled coconut water too and it’s an excellent leong sui (cooling drink) for them on a hot day or after a heaty meal of deep fried food or spicy food.

Health Benefits Of Aloe Vera

A relative gave us a few huge stalks of aloe vera last week.  I know that aloe vera has been known for many years as an amazing plant, with amazing healing properties.  Some people whom I know of eat the flesh in its raw form, by scooping out the flesh with a spoon as if they were eating jelly or ice-cream. But I just can’t stomach the bitterness of the gel/flesh. I think it’s much, much more bitter than bitter gourd.

I can only eat it if the aloe vera is slightly sweetened. I used to buy the sweetened aloe vera from Lo Hon Kar outlets but they ain’t chep. I have also boiled aloe vera with dried loh hon kor and the concoction tastes great. The other day, my mil boiled the aloe vera with some mak joa (preserved honey dates). It’s quite tasteless but the flesh is pretty nice to chew on, as if one is eating jelly.  Sadly, Alycia and Sherilyn didn’t quite accept the taste and I had to add some Ribena to the aloe vera drink and force it down their throats.

Aloe vera boiled with preserved honey dates.

I did a google search on the health benefits of aloe vera and found 518,000 search results on aloe vera! Anyway, here are some interesting facts on the health benefits of aloe vera, extracted from this website:

• Halts the growth of cancer tumors.
• Lowers high cholesterol.
• Repairs “sludge blood” and reverses “sticky blood”.
• Boosts the oxygenation of your blood.
• Eases inflammation and soothes arthritis pain.
• Protects the body from oxidative stress.
• Prevents kidney stones and protects the body from oxalates in coffee and tea.
• Alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits.
• Cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease and other digestive disorders.
• Reduces high blood pressure natural, by treating the cause, not just the symptoms.
• Nourishes the body with minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glyconutrients.
• Accelerates healing from physical burns and radiation burns.
• Replaces dozens of first aid products, makes bandages and antibacterial sprays obsolete.
• Halts colon cancer, heals the intestines and lubricates the digestive tract.

Home Remedies For Mouth Ulcers

Alycia has a huge ulcer on her lower inner lip.  She and Sherilyn seem to take after daddy’s bad genes coz he is always attacked by ulcers on his lips and tongue.  One time, many many moons ago, he was hospitalized for a week for having gigantic ulcers in his mouth and tongue.   Though my gals drink lots of water, they are still very susceptible to getting throat infection and mouth ulcers… no thanks to daddy’s genes!

Anyway, I did a google search on home remedies for mouth ulcers and found this website.  There were many suggestions given ranging from apple cider vinegar to toothpaste, Listerine or any mouth wash, hydrogen peroxide, turmeric powder,  Vegimite, brown molasses, salt, raw honey and many more.  Many even swear by applying sulphuric acid (found in batteries) to the mouth ulcer!  Yikes… I think these people are crazy to have the guts to put such a substance into their mouths!

Alycia has been gargling her mouth with salt water since yesterday but I’ve not been diligent enough to remind her to gargle several times a day.  Anyway, I will try the honey method later.  I’ll apply some Manuka honey (UMF 10+) onto the ulcer directly and will get her to gargle her mouth with salt water more often.  Will see how effective these are and keep you all posted.
