Why We Take Medicines Under Our Tongue

Did you know that medicines are absorbed by the body faster if you place them under the tongue?   I never knew until one of our team members’ customers who was critically ill and hospitalized was fed with our products under his tongue.  He eventually recovered from the coma and has since been consuming our products.  We also have customers with young kids who have not mastered the art of swallowing capsules who chew on our lutien capsules and then recover at a remarkably fast rate from ailments.

When you swallow a pill, it must go through your entire gastrointestinal tract. This means the stomach (with acid and bile), the intestines (where most absorption takes place) and then off to the liver, for some more filtering. And THEN it’s delivered to where it’s needed. This long route takes a lot of time. However, going under the tongue bypasses this entire route, and delivers the medication right to the bloodstream and off to do its job!   In cases of emergency where you need the medication to work right away, for example during a heart attack, medication is best administered sublingually.

colorful medication pills

In addition to the speed, the medicine delivered sublingually is usually more potent, and (in general terms) needs less medication to do the job it’s intended to do (you may have heard stories about people cutting pills in half, then taking them under the tongue, to produce the same effect as swallowing one pill).   The reason for this increased effect is the digestive tract is incredible harsh with acids.  And it’s meant to be this way for food to be broken down and the nutrients get stripped out.

Some drugs that are administered sublingually include:

  • cardiovascular drugs (nitroglycerin, verapamil)
  • steroids
  • certain barbiturates
  • enzymes
  • vitamins
  • some medications for mental health conditions

Placing the drug under the tongue or in the cheek for absorption can be easier on patients who have problems following a medication regime or for unconscious patients. According to research, sublingual medication administration is faster and more effective than  taking oral medication

It is  important that you consult your doctor before taking anything sublingually. Do let your doctor know if you have any open mouth sores.  And never reduce your medication dosage until you consult your doctor.

Propolis Health Benefits

Bees make more than honey. They also make gunk called propolis. And this “bee glue” is a powerful health balm. In fact, studies show it has anti-cancer properties.

I swear by propolis to treat throat infections and phlegm. It works all the time for my entire family. It takes away my sore throat so effectively any time I feel a tickle and why one of the primary health benefits of propolis stated by long term users is as a cold and flu tonic!

Whenever anyone in the family is down with a throat infection, all I have to do is to prepare a Manuka honey UMF 10+ drink (1 teaspoon) and drip in 3-4 drops of propolis from the dropperful into the drink and serve this powerful concoction to the one who’s down with a strep throat two to three times in a day. Within three days of gulping down this concoction, healing will be seen.

Propolis works effectively to bring down tooth ache and sore gums. My mum and relatives swear by this.

Below is my precious stash of bee propolis that I bought from New Zealand last year.   One is propolis throat spray and the other is propolis extract. The latter is the potent one.

Propolis throat spray will be handy when we are on the go.   For long haul flights, I put a bottle of propolis throat spray in my handbag. The soothing eucalyptus and mint flavor freshens up my breath besides keeping a throat infection at bay.

Propolis.jpg

Propolis (Pro-before, Polis-city = defense of the city), is the resinous substance that bees gather from the leaf buds of trees and certain vegetables.

The bee gathers this and transforms it in order to disinfect the beehive, seal cracks, build panels, as well as using it as a microbiocidal agent, disinfectant and also for embalming intruders otherwise difficult to expel due to their size.

Propolis, thus, is directly responsible for guaranteeing the asepsis of the beehives, locations prone to developing viruses and bacteria, given their conditions of temperature and humidity.

Dr. Seema Patel of the Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics Research Center, San Diego State University conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on propolis and cancer. Dr. Patel found laboratory and animal studies supporting propolis efficacy against cancers of the:

Brain
Pancreas
Head and neck
Kidney and bladder
Skin
Prostate
Breast
Colon
Liver
Blood
Propolis contains as many as 300 active compounds. These components were found to fight cancer in a variety of ways including:

Preventing the growth of new blood vessels to feed cancer cells (anti-angiogenesis)
Preventing the spread or metastasis of cancer from one organ to another
Halting cancer cell division
Inducing apoptosis or programmed cell death

Health Benefits Of Propolis

1. Propolis Kills Bacteria
One study investigated the anti-bacterial capabilities of bee propolis in the mouth and more specifically with regards to root canals.

The researchers compared propolis with calcium hydroxide, which apparently is a very effective anti-microbial, and found that it is significantly more powerful than the calcium at eliminating certain germs.

Propolis has traditionally been used to kill colds and flu so this study clearly shows that it has powerful bacteria killing properties throughout the body.

2. Propolis Lowers Blood Pressure

3. Propolis Helps Treat Bone Diseases

4. Propolis Boosts Prostate Cancer Cell Death
Scientists examined the cancer killing effects of propolis tincture on two common types of prostate cancer in the lab.

They concluded that propolis tincture markedly improved cell death in prostate cancer cells and suggested the significant role of propolis in chemoprevention of prostate cancer.

5. Propolis Kills Colon Cancer Cells
The scientists then tested propolis against colon cancer cells. They found that it caused the cancer cells to die by necrosis, which means that it interrupted the blood supply to the cell and caused just the local cancer cells to die and NOT healthy, living cells.

6. Propolis May Help Treat Food Poisoning

7. Propolis Protects Injured Teeth

8. Propolis an Effective Treatment for Warts

Warning:

If you have an allergy to honey or bees, you will also have a reaction to products containing propolis. Propolis may also cause its own allergic reaction when used for a long period of time. Talk to your doctor before adding propolis to your treatment plan, especially if you have existing allergies or asthma.

Is Spicy Food Good Or Bad For You?

I love spicy food and so do my kids and everyone else in the family. It must be the unique flavors imparted from the herbs and spices used in Indian and Malay cuisine that give spicy food that kick in our palate. We have spicy food every other day. Just now I bought some spicy Thai noodles and then walked a few shops away to takeaway some Indian curries (fish curry and chickpea curry) for lunch. The girls will be so happy to see spicy food on the dining table later!

Today I had this sudden desire to know whether spicy food is good or bad for us? Especially for young kids. They have been indulging in quite a bit of spicy fare lately and I am starting to get worried whether spicy food will harm their stomach lining and would this cause stomach ulcers in future?

As usual, I did a bit of research online and from what I gathered, spicy food does not really get the bad rap. In fact, there are so many health benefits of adding chilies to your diet.

For years, experts believed it caused stomach problems and worsened ulcers. The truth is that spicy food might actually protect the stomach lining if eaten in moderation. Hot foods such as red peppers can actually help your stomach produce less gastric acid. You might feel a burning after eating them, but this is only because you need to build tolerance. Either start with a milder mix or eat smaller amounts and then increase the intensity as your body gets used to the heat.

Apart from spicing up our lives, here’s what spicy food can contribute to your health:

Weight Loss
The question of whether spicy food can help with your weight-loss efforts is no longer debated. An early 1998 study by Laval University established that red pepper can increase your metabolism, causing your body to burn energy faster and more effectively. Research since then has confirmed this. Red pepper eases hunger pangs too, so it might be a good tool if you’re trying to control your weight.

Cancer-fighting Properties
A 2007 study led by scientists from England’s Nottingham University showed that curry might have cancer-fighting properties. Curry contains curcumin, a pigment that has antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. The study showed the compound is especially useful in both fighting and preventing prostate cancer. The study also noted that prostate cancer is rare in India, where people eat curry regularly.

Congestion
Eating spicy, hot food can help ease sinus congestion and relieve clogged nasal passages. Because it increases body temperature, it can also be effective in fighting fever and relieving flu symptoms. Hot peppers can help with respiratory problems such as chronic bronchitis and asthma. It also acts as an expectorant.

Increases Life Span
A new study from the British Medical Journal says you could actually live longer than those who aren’t putting much “spice” in their life.

A half-million people in China took part in the study and in the end, researchers found those who ate spicy foods as little as twice a week reduced their risk of death by 10 percent.

Up the spicy intake to six times a week and that number increases to 14 percent. Sounds good, right?

Heart Helper
Spicy food acts as an antioxidant and blood thinner, which aids in heart disease by improving cardiac blood vessel strength. Talk about heart healthy!

Anti-inflammatory
Spicy food can help with pain and healing by increasing blood flow to an affected area. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in scotch bonnet peppers and it’s known to fight inflammation.

This can be also be good for people with auto immune diseases, Parkinson’s and even asthma sufferers. Finding spicy foods with the highest concentration of capsaicin is key. For example, raw chopped peppers would be very high in capsaicin and potentially the most beneficial.

Anti-bacterial
Who knew spicy food can actually kill stomach bacteria? Peppers help prevent further infections throughout the body.

Temperature Regulation
One of the most interesting things about spicy food is that it can heat up your body when it’s cold out and, surprisingly, can cool your body off when you are hot. Eating spicy food makes you sweat and sweating actually helps your body temperature regulate itself. So while it may seem strange, definitely put more heat on your food when the heat is on!

Now the bad side of the pepper and chili…

A Bad Burn
You may like the burning sensation spicy food has on your tongue, but the flipside to that is spicy food can also cause heartburn and/or reflux disease. The reason being: its acidic and irritant properties can cause a rather unwanted effect once it hits your insides.

If you experience any of these conditions after eating spicy food,  you should consider adding a side of cream or yogurt to your dish. This may help protect the digestive system by neutralizing the burning potential and temper the irritant properties that can cause harm.

Drinking milk can help to relieve the sting from your mouth. Casein, the protein in milk, according to the American Chemical Society, helps break the bonds capsaicin forms on nerve receptors. This may help explain why cultures that use a lot of spices in their food usually include dairy in their recipes to offset the effects of capsaicin, such as in Indian and Mexican cuisine.

You can also pair cooked or raw vegetable with your curry dishes, to lessen the burn.

Worsen Hemorrhoids
Spicy food can worsen hemorrhoids by causing further damage and irritation. It can also make IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) worse, and even potentially cause diarrhea. Not fun!

Stings Your Eyes
You should be careful not to touch your eyes if handling anything spicy and you may not realize it, but even after hand washing it may still be on your skin. To be safe you may want to wear gloves and take them off and discard them immediately after preparing the pepper.

I always try to ‘negate’ the spiciness and heatiness from hot and spicy food by downing cool coconut water, chilled fruit smoothies, Izumio hydrogen water and there is always some cool cucumbers or cherry tomatoes  to go with our curry meal 🙂

Oat Bran Causes Gas And Constipation

It’s been more than a week since I started adding oat bran into my diet to reap its many health virtues.  But each time after I had taken oat bran, my tummy would feel really bloated with flatulence  and constipation would follow the next day!

Initially, I wasn’t really sure that oat bran was the culprit. I thought I had eaten something that caused gas. And I blamed it on the hormones too!   However, after several times, I finally saw the trend and identified the culprit!  That after a meal of oat bran with milk, my stomach would start to balloon up with discomfort. The next day, I would be sitting and waiting on the throne!

Today, I stopped taking oat bran and my stomach feels fine and dandy.  Then I googled ‘oat bran and gas’, ‘oat bran and constipation’ and I was spot on. Indeed oat bran is the culprit to all my stomach discomfort!

Here’s a very interesting article on ‘Healthy eating can make tummy trouble WORSE: Why a high-fibre diet isn’t always the answer for gut problems‘ from the dailymail.co.uk

BRAN

Doctors often advise adding a handful of bran to cereals to help with constipation (defined as going to the loo less than three times a week).

This is because bran is insoluble fibre, meaning it fills the stomach up and stimulates the bowel.

But bran can actually exacerbate some forms of constipation.

‘For constipation, there’s a belief that eating fibre such as bran always helps,’ says Dr Emmanuel.

‘But with slow transit constipation (STC) — a nerve and muscle problem that causes the slow passage of waste through the large intestine — it can cause bloating and excessive gas.

And for five million of the 12??million people suffering IBS in this country, fibre is one of the worst things, says Peter Whorwell, professor of medicine and gastroenterology at University Hospital of South Manchester.

Adding a bulking agent in the form of fibre such as bran gives the bowel even more work to do,’ he says.

‘A significant number of IBS patients might be hyper-reactive to agents that stimulate or irritate the gut, particularly when it comes to bran.

‘It’s wrong to say that eating fibre is healthy when it exacerbates unpleasant symptoms for so many people with IBS.’

Once he has assessed that this is the problem, Professor Whorwell advises his patients to switch to white bread, white pasta, biscuits and cream crackers — anything made from refined white flour, as these don’t contain as much rough fibre.

Signs That You Have Too Much Toxins In Your Body

You think you are healthy, but you don’t feel energetic and not in the mood to do much. You struggle to find the energy to get through the day. You’re irritable. Your stomach isn’t acting right — it’s bloated and you belch a lot. And all those nagging headaches!

These types of ailments affect many of us in our daily lives. They are not serious enough to warrant a trip to the doctor — or maybe you tried only to be told there was nothing wrong — but they still tend to drag you down, wearing away your resistance and leaving you feeling like you’re just getting old.

Well, it probably has nothing to do with you aging. Instead, your body may be surrounded by too much toxins accumulated over the years.  Your body still collects toxins when you expose yourself to free radicals  from the food you eat, cleaning products and toiletries you use or from environmental toxins.

Toxins have become an inescapable part of our everyday lives. In the previous decade there have been roughly 100,000 different chemicals used in the United States. They’re used commercially in the food we eat, the medicine we take, and general house care products that appear completely innocent.

Studies by the Environmental Working Group recently discovered that even unborn babies can’t avoid pollution in our toxin-laden society. They found traces of more than 200 commercial chemicals within the umbilical cords before birth. You might not be able to avoid the toxins but knowing where they come from and how to treat them will help reduce the impact of toxicity significantly.

Signs that You Have Too Many Toxins in Your Body.
Listed below are a few of the most common signs of exposure to too much toxins.

Sleep disorders like insomnia and restlessness
Stubborn weight gain
Constipation
Body odor and foul breath
Persisting exhaustion
Worsening inflammatory problems like arthritis and asthma
Trouble with digestion
Development of ulcers or hemorrhoids
Increase in acne, psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions
Loss of mental clarity and motivation
Muscle and joint pain
Worsened PMS symptoms
Congestion
Sensitivity to scents
Muscle aches and pains

How To Detox Toxins From Your Body – Easy Steps for Optimal Detoxification

1. Reduce Exposure – The first and most obvious step to take is modifying your routine to reduce your exposure to the chemicals. Analyze the sources listed above and try to minimize the pollution you encounter throughout the day. You can start by avoiding these most toxic food ingredients and avoiding these fake foods.

2. Stay Hydrated – Water is an essential tool for your body to flush out the chemicals you are exposed to. Purchase a filter to make sure your water is pure and make sure you drink it in regular intervals. A minimum of 8-10 cups of water per day is recommended.   Water enriched with hydrogen like Izumio is very beneficial too.  The hydrogen in the water acts to scavenge free radicals in your body.

3. Go Organic – Switch up that shopping list and ditch the processed foods. Look for organic sources of fruit and vegetables and try to avoid retailers that mass produce it. This will decrease the presence of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that are used for commercial gain. Green vegetables and most fruits have effective detoxifying qualities.

4. Maintain Healthy Digestion – Get the right amount of fiber in your diet and make sure that you use the bathroom regularly. The average person should move their bowels 1-2 times each day to prevent toxin buildup. You can make you own digestive detox smoothie.

5. Exercise – Getting active will fire up your circulation and turn your body into a toxin flushing machine. Going for runs, swimming, playing sports, or simply getting out to walk around once in a while will help keep you in shape and away from body toxicity.

6. Supplements – There are health supplements out there that will help you reduce toxicity within your body. For example: spirulina and chlorella are two kinds of blue-green algae that are effective at binding and removing toxins from your body, and they work well for detoxing from heavy metal exposure.  You can also choose a supplement that’s high in carotenoids like Super Lutein.  Super Lutein are capsules which contain 6 important carotenoids.

You can email shireenyong@gmail.com to find out more on Izumio and Super Lutein.

Dangerous Chemicals In Toiletries and Make-Up

My face is often devoid of make-up. I don’t even have foundation and face powder in my vanity pouch.  Thank God for my parents’ genes, I have pretty flawless skin.  The most I’ll do is to dust some baby powder on my face and brush a stroke or two of blusher on my cheeks. Occasionally, I will draw my eyebrows and put on a little color on my lips. I dispose my lipstick after a year, even if the stick is not even 50% used.  I really hate to think of what the chemicals will do to my body when I ingest chemicals from the lipstick that I put on.

See this list here?  This applies to everyone, not just eczema sufferers. When we use these products with hidden chemical, it is indirectly entering our bloodstream and over time causes harm to our bodies. Breast cancer is just one disease you can get from over use of such products, for example.

This is how manufacturers screw consumers!

My friend chanced upon this Drug Facts labelling when her young daughter peeled it off her Lady Speed Stick.  Tell me, who would actually tear the label off to read what’s overleaf.  I’ll just chuck my empty toiletry container into the recycle bin without giving a hoot to peel off the label to read what’s overleaf.

This particular speed stick, looked pretty innocent with a sticker at the back showing its ingredients.  Check out the 4th line – it says ‘Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease’.  So what does this mean?  It is trying to warn you that the chemicals from the Speed Stick enter our bloodstream and if you are a kidney patient, the chemicals may exacerbate your condition.

That is why I never use roll-on anti-perspirant and anti-deodorant. Even with talcum powders, I read the ingredients very carefully and only use baby talcum powders made from corn and other natural ingredients.  Once I bought a bottle of talcum powder with cooling effect. I liked it a lot as it gave me a nice cooling sensation and I loved the fragrance.  Then, the health freak me read the list of ingredients carefully and I was horrified when I read that Triclosan is one of the ingredients in it. Go Google to find out what Triclosan is.   I  buy shampoos and soaps without  SLS and paraben, though they cost so much more than regular ones.  And I drink Izumio everyday.  The hydrogen from Izumio acts to flush out toxins from our body through sweat and urine, besides balancing the pH within the body.  Hydrogen is the smallest atom in the world that can penetrate your cells at a mitochondrial level and has strong anti-oxidant properties, eliminating free radicals within your body at enormous rates.

It is really quite hard for many of us to avoid using make-up, toiletries with hidden chemicals and expose ourselves to toxic chemicals. Even the Clorox (which is highly corrosive) that you use to clean your toilets and whiten your white shirts are highly toxic when mixed with ammonia.

So do yourself a favor today by giving your body a detox to rid it of toxins and free radicals.  Besides the simple fruit and veggie detox, juice cleanse, exercise and drinking detox tea, you can also drink hydrogen water.  Choose one that suits your lifestyle.  Do not wait till your body is overloaded with toxins and serious ailments start to creep out.  Start detoxing your body today! 🙂

Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

If you ask me which department I really need to start buckling down with immediate effect, it would be my ‘sleep department’.  I am chronically sleep deprived ever since my live-in helper went back to her country for good 3 years ago.  Even when our live-in helper was around, I was already not getting sufficient sleep and with her leaving, I have since been piling more onto my already full-to-the-brim plate.

Next, you would be wondering how much sleep I get everyday.  On good days, I get a maximum of 6 hours. On most days, I get 5 hours. Sometimes fewer hours.  I know this is bad.  I have already cut down on many non-necessity chores and I have no time to watch TV or to indulge in online games, unlike many of my friends who still have the luxury for these. I wonder how some full-time working mums and SAHMs can still find the time to watch TV and play online games.   My social life is pretty pathetic and meeting friends is an occasional luxury that I get.

All I can say is that being chronically sleep deprived is damaging to my health.  My tolerance and patience levels are very low, I snap at everyone quickly, especially my kids, I am grumpy, groggy, forgetful, foggy at times, emotional, have lowered stamina when I exercise every morning and I feel lethargic.  Fortunately, I was introduced to Izumio hydrogen water and Super Lutein about 1.5 months ago to help  ease my lethargy and strengthen my immune system.  These products have given me back the energy and mental acuity that I need so much everyday so that I can function.

To be a full-time SAHM (stay at home mum) is tough already. But to juggle between being a SAHM and WFHM (work from home mum), it is akin to juggling 5 balls whilst walking on a tightrope hung 10 meters above ground!  Every single day.

The average adult needs about seven to nine hours of sleep each night, according to the National Sleep Foundation, but most of us don’t even get that much. But getting too little sleep — generally understood to mean six hours or less a night, can be serious — enough to change your genes!

Of course, one night of short sleep won’t put you at serious risk, but one week can. After just seven nights of too little sleep, researchers observed more than 700 genetic changes that could play a role in consequences including heart problems and obesity, according to a recent study.  OMG, I am petrified! And I am trying my level best to let go of some things just so I can get an hour extra of sleep each day.

Today, I want to share with you the scary effects of sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation can:

1) Lead to obesity
Too little sleep can spur some less-than-ideal food choices, including serving yourself larger portions, and a hankering for junk food, thanks to some complicated hormonal changes that occur when you don’t get sufficient shuteye. It seems that six hours of sleep or less bumps up production of the hunger hormone ghrelin and limits leptin, which helps you balance your food intake, according to a 2012 review of 18 studies of sleep and appetite
2) Up Diabetes risk
A pair of small studies from 2012 examined the link between poor sleep and insulin resistance, a telltale risk factor for diabetes. One found that among healthy teenagers, the shortest sleepers had the highest insulin resistance, meaning the body is not using insulin effectively, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The second study examined fat cells, in particular, and found that cutting back on sleep increased insulin resistance in these cells, even when diet and calorie intake were restricted, Health.com reported.

3) Damage bones
At least in rats, long-term sleep deprivation seems to contribute to osteoporosis, according to a 2012 study. Researchers found changes to bone mineral density and bone marrow in the rodents when they were deprived of shuteye over a period of 72 days.

4) Increase Cancer risk
A small (but growing) body of research suggests that short and poor sleep can up risk for certain types of cancer. A 2010 study found that among 1,240 people screened for colorectal cancer, the 338 who were diagnosed were more likely to average fewer than six hours of sleep a night. Even after controlling for more traditional risk factors, polyps were more common in people who slept less, according to the study.

Getting just six hours of sleep a night has also been linked to an increase of recurrence in breast cancer patients. The study’s author has pointed to more and better sleep as a possible pathway of reducing risk and recurrence.

5) Hurt your heart
The stress and strain of too little sleep can cause the body to produce more of the chemicals and hormones that can lead to heart disease, according to 2011 research. The study found that people who slept for six hours or less each night and have problems staying asleep had a 48 percent higher risk of developing or dying from heart disease.

6) Kill sex drive
Sleep specialists say that sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame.

For men with sleep apnea, a respiratory problem that interrupts sleep, there may be another factor in the sexual slump. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2002 suggests that many men with sleep apnea also have low testosterone levels. In the study, nearly half of the men who suffered from severe sleep apnea also secreted abnormally low levels of testosterone during the night.

7) Kill you
It’s not just heart problems that can lead to sleep-deprivation-related death. In fact, short sleepers seem to die younger of any cause than people who sleep about 6.5 to 7.5 hours a night, TIME reported. A 2010 study examined the impact of short sleep on mortality and found that men who slept for less than six hours of sleep a night were four times more likely to die over a 14-year period. The study’s authors called this link “a risk that has been underestimated.”

8) Age your skin
Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic.

Sleep loss also causes the body to release too little human growth hormone. When we’re young, human growth hormone promotes growth. As we age, it helps increase muscle mass, thicken skin, and strengthen bones.

“It’s during deep sleep — what we call slow-wave sleep — that growth hormone is released,” says sleep expert Phil Gehrman, PhD. “It seems to be part of normal tissue repair — patching the wear and tear of the day.”

9) Make you forgetful
Trying to keep your memory sharp? Try getting plenty of sleep.

In 2009, American and French researchers determined that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory. The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored. Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep.

Kimchi Health Benefits

My 3 kids love kimchi, I kid you not! Do your kids like the tanginess of the kimchi?   I have not seen many kids who can stomach this spicy and sour pickled veggies but my kids ace through it, though they would be gulping down cups after cups of water afterwards (drinking lots of water is good!).  They even love kimchi soup and even 7-year old Cass loves the piquant taste of kimchi.

On Mother’s Day last Sunday, we had Korean BBQ and this plate of spicy kimchi was superb in taste and texture. I especially love the pickled radish.   My kids loved it too.

Article extracted from US National Library of Medicine:

Kimchi is a traditional Korean food manufactured by fermenting vegetables with probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Many bacteria are involved in the fermentation of kimchi, but LAB become dominant while the putrefactive bacteria are suppressed during salting of baechu cabbage and the fermentation. The addition of other subingredients and formation of fermentation byproducts of LAB promote the fermentation process of LAB to eventually lead to eradication of putrefactive- and pathogenic bacteria, and also increase the functionalities of kimchi.

Accordingly, kimchi can be considered a vegetable probiotic food that contributes health benefits in a similar manner as yogurt as a dairy probiotic food. Further, the major ingredients of kimchi are cruciferous vegetables; and other healthy functional foods such as garlic, ginger, red pepper powder, and so on are added to kimchi as subingredients.

As all of these ingredients undergo fermentation by LAB, kimchi is regarded as a source of LAB; and the fermentative byproducts from the functional ingredients significantly boost its functionality. Because kimchi is both tasty and highly functional, it is typically served with steamed rice at every Korean meal.

Health functionality of kimchi, based upon our research and that of other, includes anticancer, antiobesity, anticonstipation, colorectal health promotion, probiotic properties, cholesterol reduction, fibrolytic effect, antioxidative and antiaging properties, brain health promotion, immune promotion, and skin health promotion. In this review we describe the method of kimchi manufacture, fermentation, health functionalities of kimchi and the probiotic properties of its LAB.

Food For Thought:

Health Benefits of Kimchi

1. Contains healthy bacteria and probiotics for the overall wellness of your body

2. Lowers cholesterol levels

3. Facilitates healthy body development and clear vision

4. Produces radiant skin and shiny hair

5. Prevents stomach cancer

6. Slows down the aging process

7. Helps you lose weight

8. Prevents the occurrence of peptic ulcer

By eating kimchi. Kimchi contains leuconostoc mensenteroides which produce dextrin, a substance important to stop the growth of H. pylori in your body!

9. Boosts your immunity

Fret not if you don’t have the time to make your own kimchi; just pick it up in the refrigerated section of your supermarket or an Asian market and they ain’t very costly. You can wake up your morning by scrambling eggs with kimchi, diced tomatoes, and mushrooms. Use it as a wrap filling or to top a baked potato. Or try Spicy Beef and Kimchi Stew.  I like to fry rice using Kimchi with loads of chopped garlic! Kimchi wrapped with raw lettuce tastes great too and that’s how the Koreans like it eaten best.

Cancer Patients Drinking Hydrogen-Rich Water

A blog reader’s mother will be undergoing chemotherapy soon for cancer. My blog reader asked me whether Izumio hydrogen water is  good for cancer patients, to which I told her that we have members (Naturally Plus Malaysia) with cancer markers brought down significantly after consuming Izumio and Super Lutein. Recently, a customer was healed from Prostate Cancer WITHOUT chemotherapy, which is unbelievable! His cancer marker from a few hundred has come down to just 8. He was a Stage 4 Prostate Cancer patient. He is 74 years old and very healthy now. He took 15 Super Lutein capsules and 5 packets of Izumio for 2+ months now. His doctor is really amazed.

Hydrogen-rich water is also scientifically known to increase the Quality Of Life (QOL) of patients receiving radiotherapy. I did a Google search and found a research paper from the US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health dated 7 June 2011.  Here are some excerpts from the Research Paper:

Effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on the quality of life of patients treated with radiotherapy for liver tumors

Background

Cancer patients receiving radiotherapy often experience fatigue and impaired quality of life (QOL). Many side effects of radiotherapy are believed to be associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation due to the generation of reactive oxygen species during radiotherapy. Hydrogen can be administered as a therapeutic medical gas, has antioxidant properties, and reduces inflammation in tissues. This study examined whether hydrogen treatment, in the form of hydrogen-supplemented water, improved QOL in patients receiving radiotherapy.

Methods

A randomized, placebo-controlled study was performed to evaluate the effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on 49 patients receiving radiotherapy for malignant liver tumors. Hydrogen-rich water was produced by placing a metallic magnesium stick into drinking water (final hydrogen concentration; 0.55~0.65 mM). The Korean version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer’s QLQ-C30 instrument was used to evaluate global health status and QOL. The concentration of derivatives of reactive oxidative metabolites and biological antioxidant power in the peripheral blood were assessed.

Results

The consumption of hydrogen-rich water for 6 weeks reduced reactive oxygen metabolites in the blood and maintained blood oxidation potential. QOL scores during radiotherapy were significantly improved in patients treated with hydrogen-rich water compared to patients receiving placebo water. There was no difference in tumor response to radiotherapy between the two groups.

Conclusions

Daily consumption of hydrogen-rich water is a potentially novel, therapeutic strategy for improving QOL after radiation exposure. Consumption of hydrogen-rich water reduces the biological reaction to radiation-induced oxidative stress without compromising anti-tumor effects.

Background
Radiotherapy is one of the major treatment options for malignant neoplasms. Nearly half of all newly diagnosed cancer patients will receive radiotherapy at some point during treatment and up to 25% may receive radiotherapy a second time [1]. While radiotherapy destroys malignant cells, it adversely affects the surrounding normal cells [2]. Acute radiation-associated side effects include fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, hair loss, sore skin, and depression. Radiation increases the long-term risk of cancer, central nervous system disorders, cardiovascular disease, and cataracts. The likelihood of radiation-induced complications is related to the volume of the irradiated organ, the radiation dose delivered, the fractionation of the delivered dose, the delivery of radiation modifiers, and individual radiosensitivity [3]. Most radiation-induced symptoms are believed to be associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation, due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during radiotherapy, and may significantly affect the patient’s quality of life (QOL) [2].

Hydrogen, a therapeutic medical gas, has antioxidant properties and reduces inflammatory events in tissues [4-6]. Drinking liquids supplemented with hydrogen represents a novel method of hydrogen gas delivery that is easily translatable into clinical practice, with beneficial effects for several medical conditions, including atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cognitive impairment during aging and in Parkinson’s disease [7-11]. Currently, there is no definitive therapy to improve the QOL of patients receiving radiotherapy. Drinking solubilized hydrogen on a daily basis may be beneficial and would be quite easy to administer without complicating or changing a patient’s lifestyle. We hypothesized that oral intake of hydrogen-rich water, generated via a magnesium stick, would reduce adverse events in patients receiving radiotherapy.

Conclusions
In conclusion, our study demonstrated that drinking hydrogen-rich water improved QOL and reduced oxidative markers in patients receiving radiotherapy for liver tumors. This novel approach of oral intake of hydrogen-rich water may be applicable to a wide range of radiation-related adverse symptoms.

Sweet Corns – Healthy Or Bad?

I love sweet corns and so do my girls. The aroma of sweet corns steaming in the pot is really therapeutic, better than any expensive essential oils!  Today I am going to steam sweet corns for dinner, along with other dishes.  I have heard the not-so-sweet news on sweet corns but how true is it that sweet corns are bad for you?

Well, I always believe that moderation is the key. I do not think that eating an ear of sweet corn once or twice a week can cause diabetes or heart disease.

Antioxidant Phytonutrients in Corn

  • anthocyanins
  • beta-carotene
  • caffeic acid
  • coumaric acid
  • ferulic acid
  • lutein
  • syringic acid
  • vanillic acid
  • protocatechuic acid
  • zeaxanthin

Here’s what Eating Well Media Group, a communications company producing an award-winning consumer magazine in the US has to say about sweet corns:

Myth #1: Most sweet corns are genetically modified.
Truth: A lot of people mix up “sweet corn,” the vegetable you buy to eat, and “field corn”—the virtually inedible commodity crop used to make everything from livestock feed to ethanol to high-fructose corn syrup. While most field corn is genetically modified, most sweet corn is not. Last year only 3 to 4% of the sweet corn grown in the U.S. was GMO. Food-giant Monsanto hopes to change all that this summer, however. For the first time, farmers are planting Monsanto’s newly approved, genetically modified Performance sweet-corn seeds. A representative from the company wouldn’t divulge how much will be planted this year. One way to try to tell whether the sweet corn you’re holding is GMO is to ask the farmers you buy from if they plant GMO corn. (Syngenta’s Attribute and Monsanto’s Performance are the two varieties sold in North America.) Another way: choose USDA organic corn. GMO crops are forbidden under organic standards.

Myth #2: Corn is fattening and sugary.
Truth: An ear of corn has about the same number of calories as an apple and less than one-fourth the sugar. In other words, it can be one of the healthier foods at the cookout! Just remember: while sweet corn is healthy, some of the toppings people like to put on it aren’t. So don’t assume an ear of corn slathered in butter and doused in salt is still a healthy option.

Myth #3: Cooking corn makes it less nutritious.
Truth: Antioxidant activity, which helps protect the body from cancer and heart disease, is actually increased when corn is cooked.

Myth #4: Corn has no healthy benefits.
Truth: Sweet corn is loaded with lutein and zeaxanthin, two phytochemicals that promote healthy vision. A mid-size ear also offers a helpful 3-gram dose of dietary fiber.

Myth #5: The best way to choose corn is by the color of the kernels.
Truth: Although corn lovers often profess to have favorite varieties, farmer Kevin Smith, interviewed by Estabrook for the story, says variety is far less important than freshness. “Any corn can be ruined if it’s old,” he says. Nor is color a key to quality. Yellow, white, bi-color—it doesn’t really matter. Preferences vary from region to region. Avoid corn with dry, pale husks and silks that are desiccated where they enter the cob. If pricked, kernels should squirt whitish juice. As for choosing the best-tasting corn, abide by Smith’s “one-day rule.” Don’t buy a cob that’s more than 24 hours out of the field.

So we are still going to have our once weekly  indulgence in sweet corns.  Eating sweet corns is still a much better option than tucking into some unhealthy snacks that are processed.  The sweetness from the sweet corns can satiate my kids’ craving for something sweet and this is way healthier than licking on a lolly or chewing on some colorful candies. 🙂
