Avocado Smoothie and Avocado Health Benefits

One of the fruits that is almost always available at our home is avocado. The mil loves avos. So do I. And we are training the girls to love avos too.  They are starting to like avo spread on their bread, avo salad, avo sushi and avo smoothie.

Here’s the avocado-milk smoothie that I made and it is really creamy, buttery, soothing, delish and filling. It can even be taken as a replacement meal, thus can help to promote weight loss.  My girls commented that it was too creamy but I liked it and will definitely make this smoothie again for lunch!

Ingredients:

1 ripe avocado
3 tablespoons of cold fresh milk
Half cup of water
Ice cubes to be blended (optional)
Put everything into my Shimono food processor and swirl it for less than a minute.
Add ice cube (optional) and serve!

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Avocados are also considered as one of the healthiest foods in the planet because they contain in excess of 25 essential nutrients, including vitamin A, B, C, E, & K, copper, iron, phosporus, magnesium, and potassium. Avocados also contain fiber, protein, and several beneficial phytochemicals such as beta-sitosterol, glutathione and lutein, which may protect against various disease and illness.

(1) Healthy brain: can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s.

Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages.

(2) Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL.

Avocados’ vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is a harbinger of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters.

(3) Pregnancy: Folic acid is commonly recommended for pregnant women to help the fetus develop its brain and other vital organs. But some health experts consider synthetically extracted folic acid a problem. They recommend using natural folate for its folic acid content instead.

Folate also reduces stroke risk, according to a study of people who eat folate rich foods.

(4) Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

(5) Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more than banana, with omega-3 and oleic acid are beneficial toward reducing blood pressure.

(6) Blood sugar: Avocado’s monounsaturated fats can prevent or reverse insulin resistance, a source of type 2 diabetes. The high soluble fiber of avocado helps prevent blood sugar spikes.

(7) Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is considered the basis of most non-contagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents.

(8) Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione.

(9) Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients.

Going Nuts Over Coconuts

I am a nutty mummy. I love anything that has coconut in it. Whether it is plain coconut water, coconut milk, coconut flesh or grated coconut meat, I am game for it!  The other day I bought a packet of grated coconut meat to go with steamed lin goe. As it was a big packet, there was a surplus of grated coconut meat. Knowing that grated coconut meat will turn rancid or bad very quickly, I finished off the grated coconut meat by adding it on everything that I ate that day… from my breakfast to my dinner!

Here’s my breakfast – toasted homemade pumpkin bread with butter and grated coconut! As for dinner, I sprinkled the grated coconut generously over my kids’ rice and dishes of grilled salmon fish, omelette and long beans!

Oh, did you know that coconut is not a nut but a fruit?

Food For Thought :

Bilberry – More Than Just For Healthy Eyes!

Upon recommendation of a friend, I got myself a bottle of Bilberry to improve my vision and to reduce the tiredness of my eyes.  I chose Blackmores, which is my most trusted brand for supplements. A bottle of 60 tabs cost RM75, or equivalent to RM1.25 per tab!  Pretty costly but worth a try and definitely cheaper than going for Lasik!  After my visit to the pharmacy to get the Bilberry, I went to the optician to have my eyes checked.  It seems my eye sight has not deteriorated but I wouldn’t trust the accuracy of the machine.  Alycia and Sherilyn had their eye sight checked too, both by the eye-sight checker machine as well as manually. The results were very contradicting.  The machine showed that Alycia had a power of over 100 for short sightedness but the manual check showed that her eye sight is perfect – she could see even the smallest number at the bottom.  As for Sherilyn, the machine showed that she had no power but in the manual check, she could not see clearly a few numbers and letters.  Anyway, I shall see how effective the Bilberry tabs are before turning to the opthalmologist.

Bilberry Health Benefits:

Some of the main constituents of bilberry are anthocyanins, other flavonoids, iridoids glycosides (asperuloside and monotropein) and phenolic acids as well as catechol tannins and proanthocyanidins.

The most well-known health property of his herb is perhaps how bilberry benefits the eyes. The anthocyanins are thought to be effective in treating a variety of eye-related ailments, and have vision-boosting and vision improving properties.

More information regarding bilberry eye health effects are discussed in another related bilberry article.

The medicinal and healing properties of this herbal medicine include astringent, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and anti-oxidant properties.

It reduces the levels of blood lipids and glucose. It is also considered an effective antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-exudative and anti-ulcerous agent. This attributes bilberry with the ability to improve permeability of capillaries and greatly enhances wound healing, and also gives it blood thinning properties.

Due to high anti-oxidant content of bilberries (main antioxidant being anthocyanocides), they are prescribed for disease prevention and immune-boosting supplements to improve overall health and promote longevity. In this regard, the health benefits of bilberry can be quite wide-ranging.

Bilberry health benefits also include combating vascular disorders, where bilberries are found to be effective in treating varicose veins, blood clotting (thrombosis) and angina. Anthocyanocides help prevent heart disease by strengthening capillaries, prevent the blood from clotting and also stimulate release of vasodilators. All this helps in greatly improving heart function and good health.

Also, another bilberry health benefit is its ability to lower blood pressure and improve blood supply to the nerves. This too contributes to overall organ health and improved overall health.

Bilberry contains glucoquinine which is effective in lowering blood sugar. Bilberry leaf tea is high in chromium and this too is said to reduce blood sugar levels. The leaves and berries are often used in homeopathic medicine for the treatment of diabetes.

From the sixteenth century to this day, bilberry is often used as an antidote to digestive problems like nausea, indigestion and diarrhea.

Bilberry has also been used to treat inflammation and ulcers in the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Dried bilberry fruit and bilberry tea have been used as a treatment for diarrhea and as a relief for nausea and indigestion. Bilberry tea is used to soothe the digestive tract. In combination with honey, a syrupy concoction of bilberry has been used as a soothing remedy for the treatment of diarrhea and other common stomach ailments.

Bilberry is known to have been used as a soothing, remedial treatment for sore throats. Traditionally, one bilberry health benefit is that a gargle or tea made from dried bilberries has provided immediate relief for sore throat.

Bilberry has also been used traditionally in the treatment of diabetes, fibrocystic breast disease, and painful menstruation.

Further, bilberries are used as a food / dietary supplement and used in making preserves, bilberry jams, wines and liqueurs.

mulberries health benefits

There is this lady which sells organic veggie and fruits at the park near where I stay. She only goes there twice a week. Each time she comes, housewives and grandmas will flock her small stall at the pavement. Sometimes she will sell packets of mulberries. Sometimes she will blend the organic mulberries with sugar cane that she plants in her farm and sell the bottled juice, which will be all snapped up in a jiffy.  Whenever my mil is staying with us, she will buy mulberries from this lady and boil them with rock sugar as the mulberries are very sour. The boiled mulberries taste a tad like Ribena. I am a huge fan of berries of all kinds as I know how powerful they are in antioxidants and vitamins but I didn’t quite like mulberries, which are pretty sour if eaten raw. Since I am really into juice-making recently, I bought a packet of mulberries and blended them together with apples, oranges and carrots – all these of which are naturally very sweet. The juice turned out very refreshing and not sour at all. And my girls and big boss loved it!

Food For Thought:

Cancer Prevention
Mulberries are a good source of resveratrol, a potent phytonutrient also found in grapes that researchers believe can prevent cancer and aid in the fight of existing cancers.

Life Extension
Because of their resveratrol content, mulberries may be a tool in one’s life extension arsenal, as resveratrol has shown in several studies to extend the life of mice.

Blood Tonic
In Chinese medicine, mulberries are considered a blood tonic, meaning that they cleanse the blood and increase its production, strengthening the entire system.

Kidney Strengthener
In Chinese medicine, mulberries are believed to strengthen the kidneys.

Liver Cleanser
In Chinese medicine, mulberries are believed to be effective in cleansing the liver.

Better Hearing and Vision
In China, tea made with mulberry paste is believed to strengthen one’s hearing and vision.

Constipation Cure
In Turkey, a treatment for constipation is to eat white mulberries on an empty stomach with a glass of water.

Anemia Treatment
Because they are quite high in iron, mulberries are a great food to use in the treatment of anemia.

Cold and Flu Treatment
In Turkey, mulberry molasses is used as a treatment for colds and flu. Their effectiveness in this way may be due to their high vitamin C content.

Premature Gray Hair Remedy
In several countries, mulberries are considered an effective remedy for prematurely gray hair.

Coconut Water Health Benefits

My hubs would normally order extra fragrant coconuts for his functions as we are all coconut water guzzlers! We love the refreshing and sweet taste of coconut water. Plus we know that coconut water is loaded with health promoting goodness.  Coconut water is very good for Cassandra as coconut water is known to be a remedy for urinary tract and kidney disorders. Coconut water is sterile as the water has to permeate through the layers of filtering husks. Some articles say that coconut water is even more nutritious than milk as it is low in cholesterol and fat and it contains lauric acid, which is present in human mother’s milk. Coconut water is also safe for babies and infants. Coconut water is also a universal donor, as it is identical to human blood plasma.

Baby is very happy here as she can guzzle down coconut water from the whole coconut, all by herself… and she does not have to drink milk before going to bed.

Good for Alycia too as she loves eating spicy food and coconut water helps to ‘cool down’ the body.

Soursop Health Benefits

The other morning, I bought a soursop from my regular supplier of veggie and meat as I could not remember ever eating it before and I wanted to try after hearing and reading so much about the goodness of soursop. The seller told me that the soursop was still very raw and recommended to me to have it boiled as soup with some pork ribs. So I bought a medium size soursop which cost over RM6. After leaving the soursop in my kitchen in room temperature for about 2 weeks, I got impatient and decided to cut up the fruit, though the fruit did not feel completely soft.  After it was cut up, the inside was still hard. And it did not taste pleasant. It tasted like a cross between a tasteless raw pineapple and ‘fun kok’ (a root used to boil soup). That’s the price to pay for being impatient. I should have waited for another week for the entire fruit to ripen. I was told that a ripe soursop is very sweet and the flesh is creamy and soft.   I forced myself to eat a quarter of this tasteless, hard fruit while telling myself that this stuff is chokefull of health benefits.  My mum suggested that I cooked veggie curry with this fruit but I had left it in the fridge and had forgotten all about it until a week later.  It ended up in the bin, sigh.  The next time I buy a soursop, I’ll make sure I choose a completely ripe one to enjoy it.

Food For Thought:

Soursop health benefits:

1. Prevents UTI (Vitamin C)
Soursop is an excellent source of vitamin C, a nutrient which increases the acidity level of urine, resulting in decreased number of harmful bacteria that may be present in the urinary tract.

2. Prevents constipation (Fiber)
Go natural! Let this fruit’s rich fiber content be the solution to problems in bowel movement.

3. Prevents leg cramps (Potassium)
It contains half the potassium in bananas. Lack of potassium, together with magnesium, calcium and sodium (also known as electrolytes) in the body can cause muscle weakness and cramping.

4. Prevents water retention (Magnesium)
Women who experience water retention before their monthly period would benefit from the soursop’s rich magnesium content. It may help alleviate this annoying premenstrual symptom.

5. Helps the body produce energy (Thiamin)
Feeling a little tired? Eat soursop! It can supply the body a good amount of thiamin, the B vitamin which is needed in aerobic energy production, the process when oxygen is used to help convert sugar into usable energy.

6. Keeps bones healthy (Copper)
It is loaded with the trace mineral copper. Calcium contributes only about 25% to the prevention of bone loss as magnesium, manganese, zinc and copper are also equally crucial for healthy bones. Zinc and copper boost the effectiveness of vitamin D, which promotes the absorption of calcium.

7. Boosts good cholesterol levels (Niacin)
Worried about your cholesterol? Fresh fruits and veggies are the perfect choice! Soursop is a good source of niacin, a vitamin which studies show has significant benefits on levels of HDL, the good cholesterol

8. Prevents pregnancy complications (Folate)
This spiky fruit contains folate. Studies have proven that folate intake during pregnancy prevents deficiency in pregnant women. A lack of this mineral during pregnancy may contribute to birth defects and pregnancy loss.

9. Helps prevent anemia (Iron)
It can provide iron which prevents the common blood disorder anemia – a condition in which the blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells. RBC is responsible for the distribution of oxygen to the body tissues, giving the body energy.

10. Helps prevent migraines (Riboflavin)
Headache? Try soursop! It has riboflavin. Several studies have shown that high riboflavin intake helps prevent migraines.

Dole Tropical Gold Sweet Pineapple

I bought a Dole Tropical Gold sweet pineapple from Jusco the other day. It was delicious, juicy and sweet but it cost a whopping RM7 each!! Last week, I saw it at a fruit stall and it was selling at RM7.80 each and I bought it too. I love sweet pineapples and can even polish off the whole head of pineapple all by myself! I love to eat pineapples after a heavy meal as they are good for digestion.

Goodness of Pineapples
Pineapple is loaded with Vitamins and Minerals. The benefits of pineapple are all the vitamins and minerals the fruit is loaded with. Its nutrients include calcium, potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. It is also low in fat and cholesterol.

Pineapple Strengthens Bones
One of the benefits of pineapple is that it helps to build healthy bones. Pineapples are rich in manganese, a trace mineral that is needed for your body to build bone and connective tissues. Just one cup of pineapple provides 73% of the daily recommended amount of manganese. The benefits of pineapple can effect the growth of bones in young people and the strengthening of bones in older people.

Pineapple is Good for Colds and Coughs
While many people often take extra vitamin C or drink extra orange juice when they have a cold, few consider eating pineapple. The benefits of pineapple when you have a cold or cough are the same as the benefits of orange juice, but there is an additional benefit of pineapple. Bromelain, which is found in pineapples, has been found to help suppress coughs and loosen mucus.

I just discovered that pineapples can help suppress coughs and loosen mucus. So the next time you have a cough and phlegm, instead of going to the doctor’s office, go get a head of pineapple and chomp down a few slices. Who knows it really works in treating your cough!

Sour Sop Goodness

My mil bought a very huge sour sop from Ipoh the other day.   I can’t remember if I had ever tasted soup sop before in my life. Well, it tasted very much like apple custard but the flesh has a tinge of sourish taste and the sour sop that she bought had very few seeds. None of my kids liked it unfortunately because of the rather pungent smell. Not many people can stomach the smell, just like how some people love durians and some people just loathe at the sight of durians. My mil and I had to finish off the fruit over a few days.

Soursop is not only a delicious and healthy fruit but it is used medicinally to treat illness ranging from stomach ailments to worms.

1. Soursop seeds which have emetic properties can be used in the treatment of vomiting.
2. Soursop leaf decoction is effective for head lice and bedbugs.
3. Soursop crushed fresh leaves can be applied on skin eruptions to promote healing.
4. Soursop juice of the fruit can be taken orally as a remedy for urethritis, haematuria and liver ailments.
5. Soursop juice when taken when fasting and it is believed to relieve liver ailments and leprosy.
6. Speeds the healing of wounds, the flesh of the soursop is applied as a poultice unchanged for 3 days.
7. A decoction of the young shoots or leaves is regarded as a remedy for gall bladder trouble, as well as coughs, catarrh, diarrhea, dysentery, fever and indigestion.
8. Mashed leaves are used as a poultice to alleviate eczema and other skin problems and rheumatism.
9. The root bark is use as an antidote for poisoning.
10. Soursop flowers are believed to alleviate catarrh.
11. Decoction of leaves used as compresses for inflammation and swollen feet.

In the past few years, the story about the miracle discovery of Sour Sop (also known as Graviola or scientifically named as Annona muricata) as a natural cure for cancer has definitely shocked the modern medical science, especially in advanced medical countries, such as America.

A Guava A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Many, many years ago, there was a tall guava tree outside our house. It was my favorite tree as I would climb the tree and stay up there for a long time. Sometimes I would pluck ripe guavas and sometimes I would hang from branch to branch like a monkey! That old guava tree bore many fruits and we had ample supply of sweet guavas year long. My late maternal grandma would make guava juice for herself a few times in a week to treat her high blood pressure and diabetes. Till today, I still like guavas very much. But I had recently read from a blogger that eating guavas will naturally stop you from lactating. So I have stopped eating guavas but will still munch on them once in a while.

Guavas are a storehouse of nutrients and can be used to treat the following conditions:

* Diarrhea & Dysentery: Guava is very rich in astringents (compounds those make your gums feel tighter and fresh after you chew guava leaves or eat a raw guava or use some toothpaste) which binds up loose bowels in diarrhea. These astringents are alkaline in nature and have disinfectant and anti-bacterial properties, thus help cure dysentery by inhibiting microbial growth and removing extra mucus from the intestines. Further, other nutrients in guava, such as vitamin-C, Carotenoids and potassium strengthens and tones up the digestive system and disinfect it. Guava is also beneficial in gastroenteritis due to reasons stated above.

* Constipation: Guava is one of the riches sources of dietary fiber. Its seeds, if ingested whole or chewed, serve as excellent laxatives. These two properties of guava help forming bowels, retaining water and clean your intestines and excretory system thoroughly. It is said that single constipation can lead to seventy two types of ailments. It is absolutely true. Every way to your total health goes through proper digestion and more importantly, proper excretion. Guava ensures both of these.

* Cough & Cold: Juice of raw and immature guavas or decoction of guava-leaves is very helpful in giving relief in cough and cold by loosening cough, reducing mucus, disinfecting the respiratory tract, throat and lungs and inhibiting microbial activity due to its astringent properties. Guava is one of richest in vitamin-C and iron which are proven to be preventive against cold and viral infections. In some areas in India, roasted ripe guava is used as a remedy against extreme cases of cough and cold and congestion.

* Skin Care: Guavas can help improve your skin texture and avoid skin problems more than the best of beauty creams or skin toner gels can do. This is chiefly due to the abundance of astringents in its fruits (more in immature ones) and in leaves. You can benefit from it either by eating the fruits (this help tighten your muscles apart from your skin) or by washing your skin with the decoction of its immature fruits and leaves. It will tone up and tighten the loosened skin. In addition to the astringents, guava is very-very rich in vitamin-A, B, C and potassium which are very good anti oxidants and detoxifiers and keep your skin glowing and free from aging, wrinkles and other disorders.

* High Blood Pressure: Guava helps reduce cholesterol in blood and prevents it from thickening, thereby maintaining fluidity of blood and reducing blood pressure. Studies have shown that food stuffs which lack fiber (such a refined flour) add to blood pressure, due to quick conversion to sugar. Guava, being very rich in fiber and hypoglycemic in nature, helps reduce blood pressure.

* Weight Loss: Guava is very helpful for those who want to lose weight without compromising with their intake of proteins, vitamins and fiber. Guava, being very high in roughage and very rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals, but with no cholesterol and less digestible carbohydrates, is very filling and satisfies appetite very easily. Just have a medium sized guava in the lunch and you will not feel hungry till night. But ironically, it helps gaining weight in lean and thin people. This is probably due to its richness in nutrients, which keeps your metabolism right helping proper absorption of nutrients.

* Scurvy: Guava can outdo many other fruits, including orange and other citrus fruits, when it comes to concentration of vitamin-C, whose deficiency causes scurvy and which is the only remedy to it. It contains five times the vitamin-C in oranges.

* Other Benefits: The juice of the leaves cures toothache, swollen gums & oral ulcers, heals wounds when applied externally, convulsions, epilepsy, bacterial infections and much more.
