Sherilyn is having a swollen gum on the right side. It is so swollen and painful that she could barely talk properly. She has been having a very painful time chewing her food too. I cut some Japanese cucumbers and mangoes for her to eat but she could not even chew them without feeling the throb in her gums. So I blended the cucumbers and mangoes into a refreshing smoothie for her and now, she could swallow her fruits and veggie in a jiffy without any pain.
Mango cucumber chia seeds smoothie… very sweet, soothing and refreshing indeed!
Yesterday, we brought her to the dentist to have her gums checked. My mum’s guess was right. Her first molar is sprouting out, thus the terrible swell and pain on her gums.
Rascal #2 is now officially bespectacled! After three checks with the optician and ophthalmologist, I am now convinced that she has Astigmatism. She was actually diagnosed with Astigmatism since early last year but I was not convinced with the tests down by the optician and later the ophthalmologist. After the third test, I was finally convinced. I took the trouble and time to bring her for three tests done by three different doctors as I wanted to be extremely sure that her eyes indeed needed corrective glasses. I did not want her to wear glasses because of a wrong diagnosis and prescription. And I had a hunch that this rascal wanted to wear glasses because her good friends wear eye glasses too.
I got her a reasonably priced purple colored plastic frame spectacles and I think she looks very cute wearing it! And oh yes, the hubs is also wearing glasses now! The optician recommended some latest spy optics to him but I told him that since he only needs to wear them when he reads, he can get a regular frame and lenses that ain’t too costly.
I think Sherilyn looks prettier with the eye glasses on. Whatcha think?
Sherilyn’s wish for X’mas this year is again her 2 front teeth. Her 2 front teeth dropped about a year ago and the permanent ones still have not sprouted out. Everyone has been asking her where her 2 front teeth are. She is worried sick too and I always tell her that because she has been telling lies to mummy, that’s the reason why the teeth just won’t grow and if she continues to tell lies, the teeth will never come out LOL * evil mum*
But I am not worried just yet that the permanent teeth are not sprouting out. That’s because her 2 front teeth fell off prematurely. First, she knocked them loose when she hit the 2 front teeth on a friend’s hard knees. A few months later, this clumsy pot walked straight into a glass door and hit her teeth and face on the glass door, OUCH!! After the second incident, the teeth dropped months later. Also, she cut her first tooth only at 13 months old. So naturally, the permanent teeth will make their appearances later too. So I shall wait and see if Santa gives her two front teeth for X’mas this year 🙂
It is hereditary. I have tonsils and tonsil stones and my #2 has them too. Both my hubs and I have sensitive throats, a heaty body and are very prone to throat infections. This is the tonsil stone that Sherilyn coughed out. No wonder they looked like teeth growing from inside her throat (read my earlier post on this)!
I never knew what exactly they were called (albeit I know that I would get them, lots of them inside my throat whenever I am heaty) until recently when I decided to write about it in this health blog when I google searched for more information.
These tonsil stones are like stink bombs and I can feel them lodge at the back of my throat each time I feel ‘heaty’. Along with tonsil stones, my throat will start to feel sore and my breath will smell foul too. Once the tonsil stones are coughed out with force, the bad breath will fade too. Sometimes, I can cough up to 3-4 tiny tonsil stones in a day. Really yucky looking and smelling stuff these stones are!
Yesterday, Sherilyn coughed out yet another tonsil stone from her throat. She was eating fruits and suddenly, she choked and coughed. Moments later, she showed me that stinky ‘white tooth’. I told her to sniff it so that she knows how it smelled like and would know what comes out from her throat in future. This girl has a very, very ‘heaty’ body just like mine. Just give her a piece of deep fried chicken and I am certain that she will either have mouth ulcer or throat infection a few days later. She has a body just like mine. She needs to be a health freak just like me too, so that she does not get throat infection so frequently.
It has been a long and tiring day for me. I barely had the time to sit in front of the PC to do my online work since yesterday. Today our live-in helper left home for good. I thought I could call it a day off at about 9:30pm after making sure that the 3 rascals had taken their shower, gargled their throat with salt water and ready for bed until I smelled perfume in the kitchen and Alycia was yelling “mummy, Kay Yi is crying!” I rushed out to check on her and she was sobbing away while struggling to tell me what had happened to her. This mischievous girl, as disobedient as ever, had sprayed perfume onto her face and eyes!! I had told her infinite number of times that she cannot use any of my make-up and perfume nor can she eat anything (in particular vitamins and Esberitox, which the girls love) in the kitchen without asking my permission. But she never listens. Just like I need to remind her every single day to wash her hands with soap after she comes back from school before eating her lunch but she just never listens! Anyway… I quickly took a sniff of her face and it smelled of my strong Christian Dior perfume! Curiosity had almost blinded the cat. She kept rubbing her eyes and cried uncontrollably. I rushed her to the bathroom while scolding her profusely for using my things without first asking me. I was worried yet fuming mad that she had disobeyed me yet again! I scared her by telling her that the perfume would blind her eyes. I told her that her disobedience had landed her in big trouble. I wasn’t sure if she was scared or worried. Sherilyn is fearless, bold and daring. She was crying simply because her eyes and face were stinging. I quickly washed her face and told her to keep gargle her mouth with water. I hope Sherilyn has learned her lesson well.
2 days ago we brought Sherilyn to the dentist to have her front tooth extracted. It was her very first visit to the dentist. Can you beat it that I have never brought Sherilyn and Cassandra to the dentist? Not until recently, on 10 April 2012. As for Alycia, I brought her to the dentist aeons ago when she was still a toddler. Now, the school’s in-house dentist checks her teeth.
Sherilyn’s front tooth had been hanging loosely for the past one month and eating has been a hassle. We suggested bringing her to the dentist to have the tooth extracted when it bled lightly since last week but she chickened out. Then during Cassandra’s 4th birthday dinner at the steamboat restaurant on Monday, the tooth was almost yanked out while she was eating fishballs (LOL!!) and it caused the gum to bleed quite a bit. It was then that she could no longer stand having a terribly shaky tooth hanging on her gum, distorting her smile and the way she talked. The next day, we brought her to the dentist.
Sherilyn was very well prepared for the visit to the dentist. She was not scared a wee bit. I guess her best friend, Berlyn’s recent visit to the same dentist last week to have her tooth extracted allayed her fears.
The whole procedure from the time she was seated on the chair to the moment the tooth was yanked out by the dentist (without any equipment) was less than 2 minutes. The dentist sprayed a cooling stuff to numb the gum and then pulled off the shaky tooth effortlessly and Sherilyn was not even aware that her tooth was pulled out until we cheered and laughed!
It was Cassandra who was a tad nervous and scared. It was her first visit to the dentist and her first time witnessing the dentist pulling off someone’s tooth. Good thing I brought her along. At least she now has an impression that tooth extraction is painless and so simple! Makes it easier for all of us if we ever need to bring her to the dentist to have her tooth extracted too.
Bill came up to RM45 for such a simple procedure! Expensive?

My overly anxious and worried hubby had spent his RM75 unnecessarily at the GP. That same night itself yesterday, Sherilyn’s fever subsided. The only medication that I gave her was a Volran suppository to bring down the temperature of 38.9 degrees Celsius and fed her with my most trusted Esberitox (which is a herb) 3x a day. I also applied a frozen wet towel to her forehead whenever her body felt hot. Feeding her with barley water and lots of fluids is important too. Her food intake was kept to the minimum, lest she throws up again. I also think that when one is sick, heavy food like meat should be kept to the minimum, so as not to over work the internal organs. This morning, Sherilyn woke up at 6am, knocked on my room door and announced happily “mummy, I have no more fever!”. She then walloped a butter bun which my mil baked and drank some water before going back to sleep. Today, I told the hubby that in future, he had better listen to me and not over-react by bringing the kids to the doctor at the onset of a high fever. I believe that the body can heal naturally within 1 to 2 days, if the ailment is not too serious, just like how our fore fathers did aeons ago 😀
Sherilyn has fallen ill. She has been complaining of a painful ulcer in her mouth for the past few days. Yesterday, she came back from school sniffing away, with a blocked nose. This morning she refused to get out from her bed. When she did, she ran to me and said “mummy, touch my forehead. I have fever!”. I touched it but it didn’t feel hot. I checked her temperature and it was less than 36 degrees Celsius. But I knew she would fall sick as she was very crabby, appeared listless and even told me that she did not want to go out for brunch. If ever this girl tells me that she wants to stay home to sleep, I don’t even need the thermometer to check her temperature. After a drink of freshly squeezed orange with Manuka honey, she puked on the dining table. After throwing up, she told me that she felt better and wanted to join us for brunch at Ficelle. In the car, she revealed that she chomped down 4 sausages and loads of french fries at her school party yesterday. And she claimed that her teacher forced her to eat them all. Nah, I knew that’s her excuse, fearing that I would give her a good bashing for eating junk food. That could be one of the causes of the fever as she has a very ‘heaty’ body and sensitive throat.
While we had brunch at Ficelle, Sherilyn insisted that she stayed inside the car to sleep and grabbed her daddy’s freshly ironed long sleeves shirt to cover herself. She was shivering (an effect of high fever) and I knew that her body temperature is slowly and surely shooting up. After a quick brunch, her ever-panicky daddy insisted that she has to be seen by the doctor. Daddy is always switched to panick mode whenever his angels are down with a fever, while me – I always prefer a ‘wait and see for 2 days to let the body heal naturally’. Most of the time, I managed to treat my girls naturally without any meds. He then dragged us to the clinic for his angel to be checked and prescribed with meds by the doctor. I am one who hates meds, especially antibiotics. I don’t feed my body with meds, unless I am down right sick and weak and need some quick fix to get well. Anyway, I listened to him to quell his worries… but I have yet to feed Sherilyn with the meds. I have only inserted one Volran suppository to help bring down her temperature of 39 degrees Celsius… and also to help her feel more comfortable so that she can eat something to prevent a gassy stomach, which will in turn lead to colicky stomachache.
She is asleep now, after a lunch of a very small meal of chicken rice (only 2 tablespoon of rice and a small wedge of chicken meat) and later some pears. Hopeful that she will get well soon to be able to enjoy her school holiday.
Sherilyn can hardly be coerced to take her nap in the afternoon. If this chatty rascal who can never stop yakking ever falls asleep in the afternoon, appears quiet, feels warm, tells me that she feels cold and lacks appetite even for junk food, I know for sure that she’s ill. I don’t even need to take her temperature for all these physical tell-tale signs will tell me that my baby is sick.
She spent the entire Sunday lying on the couch… with a cold pack on her body and a Cool Fever sticker on her forehead. I showered her each time her temperature shot up to 38 degrees Celsius. Hubs who is very kan cheong and paranoia each time the girls have the slightest temperature insisted that I brought her to the paed’s office but I said no. I prefer to let their body heal naturally. I fed her with lots of pandan-barley water, coconut water, plain water and fruits.
And oh yes, she was beaming when I let her finish off the tub of Haegan Daz ice cream! She had no appetite to eat anything but ice cream!
After just 1 dose of PCM, the fever subsided the next day. This rascal has a very sensitive throat and a ‘heaty body’. It must be the deep fried squid rings and deep fried chicken that she ate at the pasar malam on Friday evening that caused the fever. I had warned her not to eat anything that’s heaty but when I was buying fruits, this rascal pestered our friend who was with us to get her those forbidden food. I told her that the fever was a price she had to pay for disobeying mummy.
