Lazy Saturday – 16 November 2013

My kitchen is often closed on Saturdays and Sundays.  Today is no exception.  As it was still raining in the evening, rendering it very troublesome to drive out to a nearby restaurant or coffee shop for dinner, we went to the Japanese restaurant at our condo for dinner.  The hubs was stuck at a client’s function.

The girls were famished when the first dish or soft shell crab maki came. While I was busy ‘working’, the girls quickly walloped the food.

Sat nite dnr 16 nov

It has been a lazy Saturday for me today. I spent a lot of my time sitting in front of my desktop computer, trying over a zillion times to restore a malfunction in my www.healthfreakmommy.com blog, with the assistance of the blog host, Exabytes. The helpdesk staff have been very helpful to me, with prompt replies.  Unfortunately, one of the problems is still not rectified yet and I am still feeling very restless!  Having a malfunctioned blog is like having one of my kids fallen sick.  My blogs journal 6 years of my 3 kids’ precious moments and pictures.

So… having Japanese food tonight was a way I de-stressed myself… from all the week-long stress of having to deal with a faulty brand new desktop computer, malfunctioned blogs, caring for 2 kids who were as sick as a dog on the last week of their school this year, having to deal with Cass’ bladder issues and a host of other issues, sigh!  If spending a little money on some comfort food can give me comfort and seeing how my girls are enjoying the food, it is all worth it!  Life is short. Live life like there is no tomorrow 🙂

Cat beds

Many years ago, the SIL had a very beautiful Persian cat with greyish whitish fluffy soft fur. The cat required pretty high maintenance from food to grooming and vaccinations. It slept in a cage and on some days, it would be allowed to roam in the house. I wonder how the cat would know that it was not allowed to defecate inside the house. It would obediently only do its business in its cage, in the cat litter. What a smart cat it was. These days, cat lovers buy cat foam beds for their beloved feline friends. Some cats and dogs are even allowed to sleep with their owners on the bed! Though I am a dog lover, I would never allow my dog to sleep with me or my kids! No way Jose! Yeah, you can call me a clean freak ok.

Apricot Pits

The other day, I bought a box of apricot pits / kennels from the supermarket. Thinking that the apricot pits would taste just as good as almonds, I was in for a major disappointment as the pits were bitter. There was no way I was going to eat the box of apricot pits, not even with something sweet like yoghurt or ice-cream. I wanted to bin the box of apricot pits but decided to Google more about it before wasting my money. What I gathered from my search was an eye-opener. Apricot pits contain a nutrient called vitamin B-17, amygdalin or laetrile. Proponents of this theory claim they can help reduce the risk of cancer, or even fight existing incidences of it. However, there is still a lack of clinical support for this theory. Armed with this info, I decided to keep the box of apricot pits and I know throw in a few pits onto my yoghurt.

Sherilyn’s Interest in Ballet

Last week, Sherilyn seemed to have lost her enthusiasm in ballet. I asked her if she was willing to quit class and she said ‘yes’! Instead, she told me that she wanted to learn violin and asked me to get her an exceptional suzuki violin at musician’s friend. That was definitely a rash decision from her.

She must have felt like this as she and her ballet mates were advised by the ballet teacher not to sit for the next grade exam next year. Though she has recently passed the Grade 2 Royal Academy of Dance exam with a Merit, the examiner from England has however indicated that the ballerinas in her batch ‘still lacks the maturity’, thus the ballet teacher feels that they need one more year to perfect their steps.
I told Sherilyn to give herself a chance and not to quit just yet as I can see that she has the talent and potential to excel in ballet. Today she attended ballet class and when I asked her how she felt after the class and whether she still liked ballet, I was pleased to hear a positive reply from her.

Handy Manny

My kids call their daddy Handy Manny for their daddy is indeed one. He has a whole array of tools at home, including a straight line action clamp to help him carry out minor restoration works and installation of fixtures at home. Had he not been in the food catering business, I think he would excel in the home designing and renovation business as he is also a very artistic person in nature. Do you think it is too late to switch profession now? At age 42?

Devoid of Jewelry

I realized just the other day that my neck and ears have been really bare for many years! From someone who used to accessorize herself like a Christmas tree (during my pre-kids corporate years), I have metamorphosed into a Plain Jane. I do miss those bling bling jewelry on my neck, wrists and ears but besides being lazy to wear them, I fear for my safety whenever I put on my gold or sterling silver jewelry. Everyday, there are cases of robbery and snatch theft, of which many cases were fatal and near-fatal. It is better to be safer than sorry as I do not wish to be a part of the grim statistics again. Thus, I only wear my bling bling jewelry when I attend dinners or meet up with friends.

Aunt Flow

I was feeling really drained and had a heavy head for the past few days.  I kept telling Alycia and Sherilyn that I felt dead tired when we left the house to wait for the transporter at 6:20am for the past few days. Though I had about 5 1/2 hours of sleep, I still felt jaded and not in the mood to run in the morning.  Yesterday, my Aunt Flow visited and she was punctual.  Why didn’t I think of my Aunt Flow that is causing me the moodiness and fatigue? I got back my energy today. It’s always one week pre-Aunt Flow’s visit that I would feel this way.

Do you get any symptoms before your Aunt Flow visits you monthly?

Dreams For Our Girls

The other day, we watched a travel documentary on TV. It was about a group of Asian students studying at a university in the UK traveling Europe on a student travel tours package. My eldest daughter asked me if she could do the same when she goes to university in future. I sure wish that my hubs and I could afford sending all three of our girls abroad to study. It is my wish to see them get their tertiary education abroad and let them tour the world. That is why the hubs and I are working as hard as cows so that we could provide the best that we can to our girls.

Good Quality Branded Swimsuit

It is so true when they say that if you buy a piece of good quality swimsuit, it can last you for many years. The hubs bought a very costly piece of swimsuit for Sherilyn when she was 4 years old but she only wore it for a year as she outgrew it too fast. I kept it for over 2 years and now, Cass is wearing it. The swimsuit, which looks like one of those la blanca swimwear at aquabeachwear.com still looks brand new, color still as bright and pretty as new and Cass looks so good in it. The next time I buy Alycia a swimsuit, I will get her a good quality and branded one as it can be handed down to #2 and #3! It is like paying the price of one for three!

Mold-Infested Washing Machine

When our live-in helper left last year, I flipped when I opened the door of our washing machine. Having had a live-in helper for over 10 years, I hardly ever touched the washing machine. The first thing that greeted me when I opened the washing machine door was mold. The rubber tube sealing the opening of the washing machine was so badly invested with mold that I could not even wipe them away. I almost fainted when I opened the detergent and softener drawer. The interior of the drawer was completely black! Black with mold! Fortunately I could wipe off 80% of the mold but I could not reach the deep end of the detergent drawer compartment. I spent almost an hour cleaning the dirty sh*t left by our helper. I almost wanted to get a vest mold fogger to remove the mold from the washing machine but that would take time. I had a few loads of dirty laundry to do at that time. I think that lady never ever wiped the washing machine despite me telling her to do so. My mistake was I did not have the time to check on the washing machine. Even if I have a new live-in helper in future, I think I will handle the washing machine myself after this bad experience.
