Green Tea To Prevent Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infection or UTI is one of the most common health problems faced by people today. This painful infection is 10 times more prevalent in women than in men, with almost 50% of females experiencing this condition at least once during their lifetime. About 30% to 40% of UTIs recur within 6 months after the initial episode. When UTIs do recur, it is often because the treatments used to suppress bacteria seem to work at first, but they do not produce a lasting cure. UTIs can also recur if a woman is infected by different bacteria.  UTIs can also recur when the bacteria has become resistant to the antibiotics prescribed.

Symptoms of UTIs include:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • The need to urinate more often than usual
  • A feeling of urgency during urination
  • Blood or pus in the urine
  • Cramps or pain in the lower abdomen
  • Chills or fever (fever may be the only symptom in infants and children)
  • Strong smelling urine
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Nausea, vomiting, and malaise
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore vagina

HEAVY PERIOD

There are many approaches to maintaining the health of the urinary tract that include diet, exercise and herbal supplementation. Green tea is one supplement that has some scientific backing in helping the health of the urinary tract. Certain herbs are purported to help with UTIs, including green tea.

Numerous studies, including one carried out by the US National Library of Medicine have shown that green tea has antimicrobial effect on E. coli bacteria that cause UTIs.  The data also adds to the current information on the potential health benefits of green tea.

To prevent UTI, drink two or three cups of tea daily. Green tea contains certain antioxidants that one recent study found can reduce bladder inflammation. Here are some more health benefits of green tea.

Other natural remedies include coconut water, D-Mannose, Chinese herbs for treating UTI (this can be purchased from Chinese medicine halls), boiled barley water and drinking lots of clear fluids.  Stay away from acidic fruits and food, spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits, fizzy drinks / sodas, artificial sweeteners, white flour products and sugary foods.

If you think you are suffering from a urinary tract infection, see your doctor immediately, as antibiotics may be necessary. Though green tea may be helpful in preventing UTIs and protecting the urinary tract, it’s not a cure.

Treating UTI With Home Remedies

When Cass had a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) last Sunday, I panicked.  She should not be having another UTI.  The last UTI was 2 months ago. Why is this happening so frequently? She has had a Uretheral Reimplantation surgery done when she was 13 months old to fix her Grade 3 Kidney Reflux.  The post-surgery MAG 3 scan showed no more Kidney Reflux.  She has not gotten a UTI attack for over 5 years.  I can only surmise that it must be due to her holding back on peeing ever since she started Primary 2 early this year.  I know she must have felt embarrassed to be seeking permission from her teacher to go to the toilet every hourly, in the presence of her classmates.   I hope that after this bout of UTI attack, Cass knows the seriousness and consequences of holding back urine, not keeping herself clean down there and not drinking enough fluids.

During the latest UTI attack, I was steadfast determined that I did not want Cass to be hospitalized and be on IV antibiotics drips and oral antibiotics again.  Antibiotics only offer short-term relief and wrecks havoc to the body.  Each treatment with hospitalization would cost us RM6,000! We don’t have that much money to be spending on hospital bills so frequently!  I wanted to find the most effective home remedies for Cass. I spent days reading up on every article I could find on the internet with regard to treating UTI naturally and effectively.

The below is my UTI home remedy treatment for Cass.  The first spurt of pain on her bladder region came on Sunday morning and increased in intensity by the hours.  By Wednesday, she was totally pain free, after following my home remedy.

1) Waterfall D-Mannose (WDM) – every 2 hourly. I woke up at around 2:30am and 4:45am to feed her with this and to bring her to pee for  3 consecutive nights. Bacteria attaches to WDM and gets flushed out from the urinary tract. I bought this product online from Sweet Cures, United Kingdom.

2) Izumio hydrogen water – 4 times a day. You can email me at shireenyong@gmail.com to find out more on Izumio.

3) Manuka honey + propolis – twice a day.

4) Fresh coconut water

5) Ural – twice a day

6) Lots of barley water. Barley is alkaline and good in cleansing the bladder and kidneys.

7) Massaging the abdomen (the bladder and kidneys region) with Melaleuca oil + coconut oil and Peppermint oil.   Melaleuca oil, peppermint oil and coconut oil are known for their ability to kill bacteria.

Though Cass had no more pain by Wednesday night, I kept her at home for 2 more school days for her to fully recuperate at home.  She needed to drink the different kinds of potion every hour of the day and pees every hourly too.  Regular peeing is one of the best ways to flush out the bad bacteria from her urinary tract.

Precaution

UTI home remedies may not work for everyone.  If you have  flank side pain (pain at your sides where the kidneys are), nausea, vomiting and fever, it is best for you to consult a doctor as these are the symptoms of a kidney infection.

Most urinary tract infections (UTIs) involve only the bladder and urethra (the lower urinary system). Pyelonephritis (kidney infection) results when a UTI progresses to involve the upper urinary system (the kidneys and ureters).

Waterfall D-Mannose Caveat

One caveat with D-mannose is that it is only effective with UTIs caused by E. coli infection. While this accounts for about 90% of cases, there are 10% that will not benefit from this treatment.  D-mannose is effective because it attaches to E. coli bacteria, causing them to stick to each other and preventing them from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract.  The bacteria can then easily be eliminated from the body during urination.  If your UTI is caused by other bacteria like the vicious Klebsiella, then WDM may not be able to treat the UTI.  I  remember very vividly when Cass had UTIs caused by the Klebsiella bacteria before her surgery and the bacteria did not respond to antibiotics. Bacteria can mutate and become resistant to antibiotics, thus I am not keen on using antibiotics.

Pumping Baby With Chinese Herbs And Coconut Water To Flush Out Bacteria From Her Urinary Tract System

One of my blog readers commented in my blog that I should get some herbs to clear Baby’s urinary tract system of bacteria from the Chinese Medicine Hall. Well, I sent the hubs to buy a few packets of Chinese herbs from the Chinese Medicine Hall and have them boiled immediately. After a day of drinking the Chinese herbs, coconut water (which is also well known for treating UTI) and lots of plain water, Baby’s urine turned from cloudy+foul smelling to clear+no foul smell.

Today, I boiled another packet of herbs, fed Baby with Refresh from E. Excel (this is also good for the urinary tract) and continued coaxing her to drink lots of fluids.

Getting her to pee at very regular intervals throughout the day is also very important as bacteria will be flushed out through the urine.

This packet of herbs that cleanses the urinary tract system cost RM8 and consists of san soke yee mai (popped barley), sweet corn husk, a kind of bean that resembles red bean, some leaves, twigs and herbs.

The pot of herbs.  Thank God Baby has no problem gulping down the herbal water.

I also fed Baby with crushed echinacea (1/2 a tablet divided into 3 feedings a day), which I added into her milk.

On top of all these herbs and anti-UTI supplements, I have also been feeding Baby with Waterfall D-Mannose. E.Coli bacteria attaches to D-Mannose very well and gets flushed out from the urinary tract system with the urine. However this time as with the previous time, Baby is attacked by Klebsiella. Klebsiella attaches to D-Mannose too though more difficult.

From my observation with Baby for the past 1 week, her urine will be clear and odor-free during the day as she drinks lots of fluids.   However at night, her urine will smell a tad foul. The more fluids she drinks, the clearer and lesser odor her urine gets. I had tried to wake Baby up in the wee hours of the morning to drink water but all hell broke loose and nothing would make her open her mouth.

I believe that there is still a little bacteria lurking in Baby’s urinary tract system.  I have to continue feeding her with the Chinese herbs, coconut water, Refresh and Waterfall D-Mannose.  I hope that very soon all the bacteria will be completely flushed out from Baby’s urinary tract.

… to be continued.

Baby’s UTIs Caused By What I Ate. Coincidental Or A Fact?

My mum is suspecting that Baby’s frequent UTI could be due to what I eat, in particular shell food and raw sushi.

In the past, each time Baby had a urinary tract infection, my mum would help me track back on what I had eaten. 2 times in the past I had eaten raw sushi and Baby had a UTI several days later. 2 Sundays ago I had Japanese buffet for lunch. I had taken all the precautions and avoided the mouth-watering raw salmon, raw oysters and raw butter fish. But I ate baked oysters – about 3 of them. 4 days later, Baby’s pee started to smell a tad foul and looked cloudy.

My paed could not give me an answer when I asked him if the UTIs were caused by what I ate. I could not get any answer too from the internet. Would anyone like to help me answer my question?

Cloudy Urine Again

Two days ago Baby’s pee was cloudy, had lots of particles floating inside and smelled a little foul. I am all too familiar with the first few symptoms of a UTI. The moment I noticed the cloudy pee, I have been forcing tons of water down Baby’s throat. I boiled some barley water with a kind of green leaves (which are supposedly good for the bladder, kidneys and urinary tract system) and fed her with lots of it. Also fed her with coconut water (also supposedly good for the urinary tract system) and Refresh from E.Excel (beneficial for cleansing the urinary tract system). I sent a text message to Baby’s surgeon and asked for advise. He said he would not treat Baby if she is well with no fever or vomiting. He does not like to over-treat kids. Both Baby’s surgeon and I are still perplexed as to why Baby still get UTIs though the post-surgery MCUG showed that she has no more kidney reflux.

I am very determined that I want to get the bacteria out of Baby’s urinary tract naturally without the use of strong antibiotics. Too much usage of antibiotics will only render the bacteria resistant to them, as this was the case with Baby before her ureteral reimplantation surgery in May last year. I have been feeding her extra frequency / dosage of Waterfall D-Mannose, started feeding her with Echinacea (I ground the tablet into powder and added it into her milk) and fed her with lots and lots of fluids. I made her sit on her potty for long periods of time at regular intervals so that as much bacteria as possible will be flushed out from her urinary tract together with the urine. The lesser urine that’s in the bladder, the better it will be.

I suspect that the bacteria in the urine is caused by several factors. One – Baby has been suffering from constant constipation lately. Baby’s surgeon had warned us many times that constipation will trigger a UTI. Two – several days ago, Baby slept through the night without peeing for 10 hours! Though I brought her to the potty in the middle of the night, she didn’t want to pee and fussed. Having urine in the bladder for 10 hours is definitely not good for her or for anyone for that matter. Three – there is a very small red patch on Baby’s labia, which our paed said was fungal infection. Many times in the past when Baby had UTI attacks, I noticed that there was also a small red patch on her labia. So it could be the bacteria from the fungus causing the UTI or it could be the other way round.

Today is the 2nd day and Baby’s pee isn’t as cloudy and yellow as before but is still a tad cloudy. I have to wake up at 2am to feed Baby with water + Waterfall D-Mannose and to bring her to pee. Praying hard that by tomorrow her urine will look clear again.

Supplements For A Healthy Bladder And Kidneys

These have been Baby’s supplements lately:

Nutrifresh from E.Excel (freeze dried blended combo of fruits and vegetables, soy protein and rice powder which supports the immune system), Refresh from E.Excel (enhances and cleanses the kidneys and urinary tract system), Manuka honey, barley water and Waterfall D-Mannose (prevents UTI).  I used to feed her with Millenium from E.Excel (cactus juice) but have stopped buying it as it’s freaking expensive, costing over RM500 for a box of 2 packs) which can only last Baby for about 5 weeks.

The flower mug contains about 7-8 ounces of barley water, a sachet of Nutrifresh, a sachet of Refresh, 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey and Waterfall D-Mannose.   This mug of expensive ‘urinary tract system cleanser’ will be fed to Baby in 3 feedings (about 2-3 ounces in each sitting). I thank God that Baby has not gotten anymore UTI attacks ever since her surgeries in May this year and I pray that she will never ever have another UTI attack.

D-Mannose To Prevent And Treat UTI

About 2 months ago, I stumbled by chance on a nutritional food supplement that many people swear by its effectiveness in preventing and treating UTI.  This nutritional food supplement called D-Mannose is a simple sugar structurally related to glucose, that is found in many fruits, including peaches, apples, oranges, cranberries, and blueberries. It is also produced in your body. D-Mannose is considered a safe and natural nutritional food supplement. Since it isn’t metabolized, it doesn’t interfere with blood sugar regulation, and is therefore safe for diabetics.

I immediately did a Google search on D-Mannose and from my research, it really did sound convincing to me. As there was still bacteria detected in Baby’s urine then (3 months ago) despite the Ureteral Reimplantation surgery, I was really devastated and was really determined to find a way to help keep my Baby free from UTI. I immediately emailed the owner and manufacturer of the product to inquire if it was safe for a toddler to consume D-Mannose. The owner replied me promptly and told me that even infants can consume D-Mannose. I was quite convinced that D-Mannose would work on Baby too and emailed the owner/manufacturer of the product in the U.K. to order a tub to try. The owner responded and wrote something that I had least expected to read. She said she did not want to make a fortune out of my baby’s misfortunes and would send me the D-Mannose for free but I would have to bear the shipping charges. No problem, I immediately paid the shipping charges by credit card and within a week, I received not one but THREE tubs of D-Mannose from the manufacturer/owner. The owner requested that I keep this to myself and not publicize to the whole world that she sent the D-Mannose to me at no cost as she cannot afford to do this to every Tom, Dick and Harry, though she would really love to. I am really grateful and thankful to the owner for her act of kindness.

According to researchers at the Washington University (WU) School of Medicine in St. Louis, most UTIs start when Escherichia coli (E. coli)—a microorganism that lives in the digestive tract and is found in the anal area—invade the bladder and penetrate a protective coating of the superficial cells that line the bladder. In most cases, urine flow washes out bacteria from the bladder. But the cell wall of E. coli bacteria has tiny finger-like projections that contain complex molecules called lectins on their surface. These lectins are cellular glue that binds the bacteria to the bladder wall so they cannot be easily rinsed out by urination.

The chemical structure of D-Mannose causes it to stick to E. coli bacteria, maybe even more tenaciously than E.coli adheres to human cells. Although the mechanism of how it works is complicated, theoretically, if enough D-mannose is present in the urine, it binds to the bacteria and prevents them from attaching to the urinary tract lining

E. coli cells coated by D-mannose in the urine become unglued and get flushed right out of the body. And the beauty about D-mannose is that you can take it year-round without any side effects. You don’t have to wait until symptoms appear. From what I have read, D-Mannose only works on E-Coli and Klebsiella bacteria, the 2 most common bacteria that cause UTIs. So if you have other types of bacteria in your urinary tract system, the bacteria would not be ‘attracted’ to D-Mannose and cannot be flushed out from your body.

Baby has been taking D-Mannose for almost 2 months now and with God’s blessings, she has not gotten any UTI attacks for 3 months.  The Ureteral Reimplantation surgery has been a success too and I was told by our surgeon that the ‘dirty’ urine that I’ve been seeing on and off for the past 3 months could be the ‘debris’ from the urinary tract system as Baby has had bacteria in her urine from day 1.  Our surgeon knows that Baby is taking D-Mannose and he has no objection to it since D-Mannose is just a type of sugar that is found in many fruits, including cranberries – the most popular fruit known to help prevent UTI.

Praying Hard

…. that Baby C does not have anymore Klabsiella bacteria in her urinary tract.  More than a week has passed since the last urine culture test was done.  I haven’t sent Baby C’s pee for another culture as her purging had stopped, her down under is not sore anymore and her pee looks rather clear.   I am praying hard that the Klabsiella bacteria had been flushed out from Baby C’s body through her pee.  I am also hoping that after the ureteral reimplantation surgery and all that she had gone through last month, her urinary tract system is now normal and functioning as it should have been.  Now that the duplex system is fixed, I hope baby’s body is able to fight off whatever bacteria that is invading her urinary tract.   Before the surgery, the urinary tract system is like a yoyo due to the double ureters.  I am praying hard that baby’s urinary tract system is A-ok now.

I am still living in fear each day. I still smell and scrutinize baby’s soiled diaper each time I change her.  For as long as there is no confirmation from the doctor or MCUG scan that she is free from Kidney Reflux, I am still petrified that what she had gone through for the past 1 year will still happen again. I am well aware that the success rate of the surgery is 96%-100%, so there is a chance that she still has kidney reflux.

In the meantime, I am feeding baby with barley water every other day as I was told by my surgeon that barley water is good for the bladder.  I did a google search on barley water and UTI and found out that indeed, barley water, which is diuretic, is effective in treating UTI.  Have also been feeding her with boiled lemon grass water. I read that coconut water is also good in treating UTI.  Perhaps I should try feeding her with coconut water too.  Hopefully with all these natural remedies along with being super clean with her down under, I can help stave off those nasty bugs from attacking Baby C.

Baby C’s Post Ureteral Reimplantation Surgery

Baby C has been poo pooing 3-5 times a day ever since she was discharged from the hospital more than 2 weeks ago. Several days ago, her down under turned sore and her pee also smelled a tad funny in the wee hours of the morning. These are normally the classic symptoms that would present themselves whenever baby has bacteria in her pee. I applied some Egozite and Pureen cream (both contain zinc oxide, which prevents soreness and nappy rash) on her down under and after a few days, the soreness went away.

Today, I took samples of her pee to the hospital for a urine culture. It was really difficult and stressful for me and baby. My maid and I had to break our backs waiting for her to pee for over an hour, yet she didn’t pee.  She was struggling and crying. I even had to offer her my boop to calm her down, while my maid sat on the floor waiting to catch her pee with the specimen bottle. After more than an hour and a specimen bottle with only about 1/2 a teaspoon of pee, I told my maid to stop waiting as baby wasn’t cooperating.  I also told my maid to throw the very little pee collected as it may be contaminated (in room temperature for over an hour and I think I spilled a little drinking water into the bottle).   I then cleaned baby’s down under with some cotton and saline and stuck a urine specimen bag onto it. Within 5 minutes, she peed in the bag.  I quickly asked my maid to hold baby in an upright standing position (so that the pee would not leak out from the specimen bag) and I hurriedly and carefully removed the specimen bag (which made baby yell out in pain when the bag was zapped off)…. and poured the precious pee into a fresh sterile specimen bottle. Next, I placed the bottle of pee in 2 layers of plastic bag and placed it in the fridge. Then, called the hubs to hurry home to send the pee to the hospital. Haih… my baby is always playing tricks on me. When I don’t need her to pee, she would always pee on me and on my bed…. and when I desperately want her to pee, she just won’t cooperate.

The urine FEME results showed that the WBC in her pee is 5-10 (which is insignificant) and there’s 1+ bacteria. I sent a text message to my surgeon to inform him. He replied and said that WBC of 5-10 is not a UTI…. he said that having a few bacteria in the pee after a bladder surgery is not uncommon and he will not treat baby as she’s well. I am praying hard that the few bacteria that’s lingering in the urinaray tract can be flushed out completely in a day or two, just like what had happened in the past…. without any treatment needed. Anyway, baby’s purging is slightly better today. As of now today, she has only poo pooed once and I hope the purging will stop coz in my baby’s case, no purging = no bacteria.

Baby C Has A Swollen Bum

After getting a total of 5 jabs on her upper buttocks yesterday and today, both of Baby C’s buttocks are swollen. The injection sites feel hard and swollen and I tell you, my heart is crushed. During her bath just now, I used ice wrapped in a hanky to apply on the injection sites in the hope of reducing the swell. My poor sweetiepie is indeed a trooper and really a tough nut. She’s going to grow up to be one very strong and tough lady! She’s got 1 more Gentamicin jab to go tonight and 3 more Rocephin jabs for the next 3 days. All the doctors who administered the jabs on her could only shake their heads seeing the pain and torture my sweetiepie has to endure. The doctor this morning said that even we adults would yelp out in pain when given the Gentamicin jab. Gentamicin is known to cause burning sensation when it touches the muscles. Sigh…..
